Waking up the next morning in Draco's arms should have made her smile, it should have been the only thing in the world that mattered, but instead the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was the dreaded black mark tattooed across her arm, it instantly sent tears to her eyes.
She tried to muffle her panting breaths in an attempt to silence her cries, but it didn't work, as soon as Draco heard the slightest sniffle, his eyes shot open and he had grabbed her, hugging the poor girl so tight.
"I know baby, I know." He rocked her back and forward trying to calm her down.
She knew that today she'd have to see her mother, and she was the last person Effie wanted to see or speak to. Just the thought of the woman made the girls blood boil.
How could she do this to her daughter? Was this her plan all along? Was Effie always destined to be a death eater?
There was only one thing she was certain about and that was that it couldn't be changed.
She and Draco lay in bed for hours, she couldn't find the energy to get up, or even move the slightest, she knew at one point she would have to get up, she was determined not to let this defeat her, not when she had someone as caring as Draco by her side to get her through it.
Eventually she worked up the energy to go for a shower, the feeling of the hot water felt absolutely divine against her skin.
Something about having this mark on her arm made her feel disgustingly dirty, she stood in the shower scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing at it, but it didn't do anything, only made it more painful.
She stood in the middle of the room drying herself with a warm towel, catching Draco admiring her from behind in the mirror. Right now, he was the only sense of normality that she had.
Snape was right, her mother was only going to hurt her, the only person who hadn't was Malfoy, and she just so hoped that he never would.
"Effie?" He broke the silence in a cautious tone.
She turned around and looked at the boy curiously, with an eyebrow raised.
"Something tells me I'm not going to like what your about to say." She giggled.
He lay on his bed in silence for a moment, before sitting up and taking a deep breath.
"My mother came in while you were in the shower— there's another meeting, tonight." He blurted out, almost as if if he didn't say it now he wouldn't have had the courage to say it later.
Effie's eyes rolled to the back of her head in absolute frustration, it was time to face the music.
She was now one of them, and no matter how much she tried there was nothing that could change it, she was now property of the Dark Lord, same as her mother, same as Draco, she was just a number now.
"Well that's just fucking brilliant isn't it." She walked over and sat down at the end of the bed, twiddling with her fingers, not knowing what else to say, not wanting to seem scared in front of him.
"If you want, I can try and get you out of it?" He urged, in a reassuring tone.
"What good is that going to do Draco?" She snapped, not meaning to. "I can't run from it can I— just do me one thing please?"
