In that moment, Gulf felt like his heart stopped too. He saw the doctor rush in the room and he covered his ears not wanting to hear more.
"Can't you turn that off?" the doctor said as the sound of the flat line kept on going.
The sound was turned off the moment the doctor took a stethoscope and started listening to Mew's chest. "What are his vitals?" He asked hanging the thingy on his neck like all doctors do.
"They are stable."
"Has he opened his eyes yet?"
"Not yet but they are moving behind the eye lid."
"What triggered it?"
The nurse that sneaked Gulf in stepped out and said,
"His friend came to see him, he is sitting outside."
Gulf still hadn't realized that what Mew had let go was not his will to live. He let go his fear of facing the brutal reality he was going to face if he woke up. That's why he had been in the same condition for a long time because there was no need to fight for his life if he was just going to lose it again after waking up.
But then Gulf came and reminded him of the reason why he had to fight. He had tested a piece of happiness and maybe, just maybe he might get the chance to enjoy the whole package. That's why he woke up.
"Ok call his family and tell them he is awake. Let the friend stay besides him until the family is here."
Medically, this was a good idea. However, legally, it was a terrible idea considering what had happened at the court earlier the same day. Gulf looked anxiously at the medical team leaving the room with smiles on their faces and he was so confused.
The nurse who had sneaked him in stood in front of him with smiles reaching her ears. "He is awake." She said.
"But I heard the sound."
"Ooh, my colleague made a mistake when she was turning it off. He is awake you can go and see him. He hasn't opened his eyes but anytime from now."
Gulf's shoulders had been tensed, relaxed. He was alive. Mew was alive.
"Thank you for coming today. You saved him."
Gulf wanted to see it with his own eyes so he went in despite the fact that the nurse had more things to say. He pushed back the chair that had been moved away from the bed when the nurses barged in the room. He sat down and held Mew's hand again.
He sat quietly caressing Mew's hand.
"Thank you for coming back." Gulf realized his voice had became hoarse. He cleared his throat and he felt a jolt from Mew's hand. He looked up at Mew's face and he saw his eyelids fluttering.
Gulf squeezed Mew's hand some more and waited. He waited patiently as Mew tried to find his way back. He moved in closer to the bed and started stroking Mew's hair. It was a beautiful moment and Gulf witnessed the moment Mew finally opened his eyes blinking innocently like a baby.
"Take your time. I'm right here with you." Gulf whispered as his eyes teared up without him realizing.
Mew turned to Gulf and he teared up as well,
"Warer" He asked feeling his throat so dry.Gulf reached at the desk next to the bed and opened a bottle of water. He took a straw and inserted it in the bottle. He directed the water to Mew's mouth as he helped Mew tilt his head so he could relieve his patched throat.
Mew sipped slowly and the relief he felt was like heaven. He laid down back on the bed when he was done with a soft, "Thank you"
"Why are you here? Why are you like this." The faucet to Gulf's tear tank was broken. It felt like that because the tears wouldn't stop coming and his eyes were starting to get swollen.
"Why didn't you report him? He almost killed you Mew. He almost took you away from me. Do you really love him? Is that why? Because he is your family?"
Gulf really wanted to know the reason why.
"I told you I'm adopted right?" Mew's voice was getting better and more clearer. "Every time he hit me, he reminded me that I was not part of the family, he called me a tick. At first I had to put up with him because I was too young and I didn't want to go to the orphanage. Knowing that I didn't have anywhere to go just made me suck it up. Atleast I had a roof under my head and food on the table. That was good enough for me. So I had to endure everything because It was the price I had to pay for living."
"But you're an adult now. You can leave."
"And go where?" Mew asked turning to look at Gulf. "I'm just in my final year of high school and I'm not even sure if I'll be able to graduate. So where would I go?"
"To me. You can come to me."
Mew chocked on his tears as he said, "but I'm a sinner to you."
"Your brother is the sinner here."
"I wronged you too. If only I told you about Uncle hitting your sister with the car. If only I had told you about Manny leaving then we would've realized earlier that he raped your sister."
A thud sound startled the two teenagers catching up.
"What the heck did I just hear?"
They turned to see Mew's father and the mother behind the surprised male.
"Who raped who?"
Gulf stood up abruptly surprised at seeing the two parents here after the court declaration.
"Wait a minute, I need to understand something," the man held his mouth as he started pacing in front of the door.
"Who was adopted? Where did you hear such ridiculous news?"
"Phi told me the truth pa. You don't have to lie anymore."
"That Bastard!" The father barked startling everyone in the room.
He stepped closer to Mew wanting to rectify this situation.
"Mew. You are my son. I didn't pick you somewhere. Son, you are the result of a loving passionate night between me and your mother. You were planned after a long discussion. Your mother carried you for 9 whole months and I was there every step of the way."
The father came next to his son feeling utter disappointment in himself. He had really failed as a father but he still had to set things right.
"You are my blood, Mew."
