Gulf sat with Phin and Sert but his mind was going in circles. So many questions were going through his head and he couldn't figure out the answers.
What have they done to Mew?
Why was he on life support?
Was Manny serious about killing Mew?
Did he try to kill him already?
Is that why he was on life support?
When did he go on life support?
Did it mean the audio he heard the day before was not Mew?
But it was Mew's voice.
He thought of the glitches he heard when the audio was playing. It only meant one thing, It was edited because Mew would never say that about his family.
So what was happening?
He needed to see Mew.
He is brought out of his head when he heard Phin on a call saying, "3 months? It can't be. It's urgent and the suspect might vanish again. 2 is better but still we need it rushed.... Ok I'm coming with everything this evening. See you then." Phin ended the call and turned to Gulf,
"I'm glad you called us the time you did. We got his confession recorded and we'll use it too."
Gulf was relieved the call had gone through. When he reached for his pockets the moment Manny walked in, he dialed the emergency number from the phone Phin and Sert had given him a before he got in.
"We just need to wait 2-3 months for the DNA results otherwise everything else is all set."
Gulf thought waiting three months was too much. What if something happens in that 3 months?
"Can't we use what we have for now?"
"It's not sufficient. We want a solid case. The recording can be easily dismissed as altered but never the DNA. Plus we need Mew's statement which might be hard to get since he is in the hospital. It's better to wait."
And Gulf waited.
In the first two weeks, a letter came to his house summoning him for a trial at the court. Lucky enough he was supposed to attend at the end of the month after his midterms. His attendance had been greatly ruined in the last year and he was sitting on his last chance to make things right otherwise he was not going to graduate high school if he missed anymore classes.
School has been different after that confrontation with Manny. Mew was not there and everyone knew what had happened.
Rumors had travelled so fast with the video of Gulf hitting Manny online. People came up with different theories but the basis was that Manny had done something terrible to Gulf's little and most if not all knew how Gulf was obsessed with his little sister. No matter how close MewGulf were, the fact still remained that Mew's brother had done Gulf's family wrong big time.
Many people sympathized with Gulf and they said he was justified in hitting Manny that day. If only they knew he was going to be paying the price for that one simple punch.
He did a terrible job at studying towards the midterms and when the exams started he was lost. He did what he could and was surprised when he saw his results were just above the average but that did not make him feel better. He felt like something was missing. A piece of his happiness was missing
A few days later, Gulf went to the court accompanied by his parents and sister. During the trial, a video of Gulf hitting Manny was played and he was questioned why he did that. His answer was that it was because of a misunderstanding and he regretted the action. Mr Perez did a good job defending him and the trial ended with a fine. But before the trial ended, the prosecutor stood up and said,
"My client who failed to be present today has requested a peace order against Gulf. They don't want Gulf to come near the family or their residence since the victim is still suffering physically and mentally from the damage done."
Gulf balled his hands under the table. How could they do that to him when they knew the relationship between Mew and him. Mr Perez agreed to the request because Gulf had no choice.
As soon as Gulf left the court, he headed to the hospital Mew's mother had transferred them a year ago. He had stayed a week with Mew so he remembered the visiting time and the rules. He had also made friends with the nurses who squealed every time they saw MewGulf together so it was easy going in.
He grabbed one nurse he recognized and brought her to a secluded corner. He asked her about Mew and the news was bad. Mew was not doing well and it's been almost two months after his surgery with no improvement. He asked about the family and Gulf heard that they haven't visited for a few days. They usually just called to hear the progress. He asked the nurse if he could spend the night with him because he had a lot of things to say. The nurse told him to come after the doctor's evening rounds.
A few hours later, Gulf was back and the nurse sneaked him in. Mew looked so different and helpless. He looked so innocent and so so sick. His nose and lips were covered by the oxygen mask. Gulf sat down and held Mew's hand,
"Meeew."
He called out heartbroken. He was expecting a response but he was met by the calm beeping of the machine connected to Mew's chest.
Gulf's heart had been full of Faffy for all his life but ever since Mew happened, he knew then what friendship meant. He knew how the other type of love felt like. He had experienced his firsts with Mew and the thought of losing him was not something he wanted to experience.
"Mew," he called again and held tight his hand. It seemed as if Mew's name was all he could only say.
His mouth was not cooperating with his mind so the tears talked instead. They endlessly made a trail on his sad face and before he knew it, the sobs broke through. And even in that moment, all he could do was desperately call out Mew's name.
It was as if Mew had been waiting for him so he could finally let go. During Gulf's heart wrenching cry, the machines started beeping frantically and the nurses came running in the room.
Gulf was pushed out of the room and all he could see was Mew's last moments flashing before his eyes. He heard the nurses screaming orders and asking for the other to call a doctor.
Gulf slumped on the ground just outside Mew's hospital room thinking he shouldn't have come.
If Mew was going to give up then he shouldn't have come at all.
He was nervously waiting, his ears listening intently to what was going inside the room when he heard the flat line sound.
Mew's heart had stopped beating.
