Mew's father arrived first before the ambulance. Aunty had called her to alert her about what happened after Gulf had dropped in and told her that he would be taking Mew.
"What's happening?" He asked taking off his tie and his blazer.
"Mew knows."
"WHY DID YOU TELL HIM?" His voice boomed all over the room and echoed in the empty house.
"He came back From school knowing I don't know who told him."
Which was weird that because there were only three people who knew about this secret. The father, Linda and Aunty; so how could Mew have known. The man called the driver, "where did Mew go today?" He sounded so furious.
"Why didn't you tell me that first? Listen human, if you want to keep your job you better start behaving properly."
He ended the call, "where is he?"
"In his room with his friend."
The father went up the stairs and knocked on Mew's door out of respect. He got no answer but still he went in and saw Gulf hugging Mew. His eyes saw a white towel on Mew's hand now coated red.
"What's happening here?"
"please leave." Mew weakly muttered.
"Mew." The father called as Aunty came in too.
"Why is an ambulance here?" she asked then she gasped at seeing Mew's hand. She turned to the table and saw the knife and the puddle of blood. She had given Mew a knife. The knife he used to cut himself with.
The father looked at the woman and shook his head in disappointment. No one was doing anything right in the house.
The paramedics came in and saw Mew's state. He was now ashen. Colour had vanished from his face. They made him lie on the stretcher and they left with Gulf in the back of the ambulance sitting and holding Mew's other hand.
The father was in his car behind the ambulance.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Mew was examined. His hand was ok but he only needed more blood and that's what he got along with some pain stop and a dressing on his hand.
Mew's father came in the room after everything had been done and Gulf snickered when the man said, "thank you for being there for him. I'll be a better father from now on."
"From now on? Isn't it too late for that?"
"What are you talking about?" The father asked confused.
"You're messed up. I'm going to drop my respect for a moment and lay out the bitter truth. You're totally fucked up. You and your family. I don't get the reason why Mew is part of all this. From physical abuse, to manipulation to deception and everything in between you say what? You're going to take care of him? Sir, you had 18 good years to take care of him. 18 solid good years but you failed. How can I trust you now? How can you do it now when you had 18 years to prove yourself?"
The man laughed. The teenager was making sense but it was ridiculous. What could he even do for Mew? "See here, I'm his father. I'm his legal guardian."
"He's 18years old and an adult. He can make a choice and he chose me. So He is going with me. I'll be his legal guardian from now own."
"What? He needs a family an-"
"I will be his family. He needs a home? I will be his home now! He needs parent? We'll share my parents. Just do what you've been doing all this while."
The father looked at him with his face asking what?
"A bank! You've only been a bank to him and that's what you can continue to do. He still needs to go to college and new clothes once in a while."
It was then that the father realized how serious Gulf was.
"Until I'm able to buy him clothes and pay for his taxi and buy him food, please be his bank. That's all you can do anyway."
Gulf was done talking and turned to Mew. He saw tears on the side of Mew's face and realized Mew had heard him. He didn't say anything until the speechless father left. When the door closed and Gulf was sure the coast was clear, he gently said,
"You can let go now."
And let go Mew did.
He wept.
He sobbed.
He bawled.
He sniveled.
He whimpered.
He cried.
He was letting go of all the pain he had bottled up for the last 18 years of his life.
Letting go of the fear he always had;
the insecurities he always felt;
the uncertainty;
the despair that always gripped his heart;
the loneliness that always accompanied him.
He expressed them in all types of crying and Gulf cried with him.
It was all needed. For a person to become brand new, they needed to let go of their past and crying was the beginning of a process of letting go.
Gulf was together with him all night.
He was there with him waiting. Mew had nightmares but Gulf soothed and patted him back to sleep. When Gulf's parents started calling, he ended the calls because he wanted to be with Mew. Gulf was supposed to go to school the following day. More absence from school was going to ruin his chance of graduating from high school.
But he wanted to be there for Mew and when morning came, he was going home with Mew who had woken up with color on his face.
Mew still needed a few days of rest. Gulf had to go to school but he couldn't leave Mew alone so he went to the reception to explore his options.
"Oh Jongcheveevat, are you Gulf?" A nurse asked as soon as Gulf told her his story.
"Yes."
"his guardian said to follow whatever you say."
The man was doing his job of being a bank as Gulf had requested of him. "I would like to discharge him right away and instead he can get daily nurse visit to checkup on him from home. Is that possible?"
"Yes that's possible. Here is the form. You can fill in the address and time you would like us to come and any other additional details."
Gulf filled everything in and an ambulance was organized to take them home. They went in and as soon as Mew came in the house all hell broke loose.
Gulf's mother had been in the kitchen getting some breakfast ready when she heard the sound of an ambulance. She immediately came out holding her knife and an onion she was cutting trying to see what was going on. Ever since Faffy, the sirens unsettled her. She wasn't expecting to see Gulf walk in with Mew and a nurse holding up an IV connected to Mew's arm.
Gulf and Mew and the nurse looked up and saw the mother with a disapproving face. She waved her hand with the knife saying,
"Get that boy out of my house if you still want to live."
