The belated regret

"For me?" it was clear that Yana was confused.

"You don't look like the studious type, more like an annoying troublemaker," Luka bluntly stabbed her in the heart, "So why are you going out of your way to do a research project? It's not even part of the course."

Yana would be lying if she said she wasn't shocked that Luka saw through her this easily without even knowing her. Yet Luka enjoyed the lost expression on her face.

"Because it'll help the university," this wasn't a lie, potentially, if they did a good job, it could raise the department's reputation.

Luka pulled away and laughed mockingly. He ran his hand through his hair and sighed, "Who are you kidding? How can I work with a person who's lying? What's your real reason?"

Yana bit her lip, "Will you really agree?"

"What's your reason?"

"Fine," Yana now was pissed at Luka's personality, no wonder no one wanted to approach him, "Money and VIP coupons."

Luka got closer to her and smirked. It was attractive but also incredibly infuriating, Yana wished to smack it away, "What? What you smirking for?"

"You finally show your true colour, instead of being the goody shoe you pretend to be, I can see how selfish you are."

"So what?"

Luka's words made her angry, she bored her index finger in his chest and stared him straight in the eyes, "Of course anyone places themselves first, I haven't denied that but I also care for others. Human nature is like that, don't tell me you aren't the same."

Taken aback Luka pulled away then, stunned, he looked at the sky for a second.

"I also want to help you."

He turned with a mocking smile to her, "Alright, I 'll help you with the project, let's see how well you can do."

With that Luka turned around and walked home while Yana held her chest and breathed in and out. What a jerk. She was wrong to have thought he was decent.

Meanwhile, Luka almost laughed himself back home but then standing in front of the mansion, his blank face returned.

As he entered, no one greeted him but in the living room two elegant people sat. His parents neither looked at him nor responded to the fact he was present.

He didn't care as he was already used to it. Despite his large home, his parents were against having butlers, they didn't like anyone in their private space. Occasionally, there was a cleaner coming on the weekends but apart from that, there wasn't even a cook.

As his parents were both politicians working for the same party, they weren't short on money. Most of the time, his parents weren't home but out for work, so they established the habit of eating out.

In the kitchen, Luka remembered that Yana gave him a lunchbox. Popping it in the microwave, he wondered if it was still ok to eat and wondered if he was sane enough to actually consider eating it and not throwing it away.

But then it already found itself on his plate. Taking the first bite, Luka's face blanked. It was edible but not tasty. It completely lacked flavour even though he already ate it piping hot as she suggested.

Yana. Luka stirred his plate and was lost in thoughts. She was unbelievably annoying and like he thought, she only cared for her own benefit, why else would anyone approach another person?

However, he has agreed on a whim to help her and couldn't take his word back. Also, he was curious as to how long she could last. Could money and food really drive her to the end? It'd a hilarious sight to see her trip and fall.

Also, she has made him this food albeit not enjoyable, it was still the first time someone has cooked him something. However, all good feelings were drowned out, remembering that from now on he had to work with her and enduring her annoying personality.

Just the thought of it made him want to growl in pain.

The next day at uni, the first thing Yana did was to look for Luka. She needed to be sure that he kept his words and wasn't just lying to her.

"You bloody ditching me again? What am I ? Recyclable trash? Stick into the dumpster and voila done?" Mia wasn't in a good mood.

The whole day yesterday, Yana was busy doing who knew what and now she didn't even tell Mia what in the world her brain produced again.

"Sorry, sorry," Yana apologetic shouted as she was already on her way to find Luka. Yana didn't want to tell Mia yet about the project and Luka. Only if she was successful would she tell her about it.

Running down the hallway, Yana saw the troublemaker, the guy who punched a hole in a professor's office, Tim. As she passed him, she heard, "Guess what? I saw that outcast guy-"

Not even waiting for him to finish, Yana ran back and slung her arm around his neck before dragging him with her. His feet ground against the floor as he helplessly submitted to his fate.

Tim didn't even need to see to know who this hellish person was. He just quietly sobbed as once again his dignity was slandered by Yana. Stomped 6 feet under the earth, buried to be never seen again.

"Where did you see Luka?" Yana dashed with full speed outside, not even noticing she was subtly strangling poor Tim.

A bit impatient, she waited for Tim to answer but as she didn't hear anything, she stopped only to see his pitiful form. She let him go.

"Where is he?"

The guy held his throat before pointing behind Yana. Tim fell on the ground and turned around but her reflexes were fast.

As she didn't see Luka, she caught the guy crawling away and stepped on his trousers.

"Show me the way."

With tears streaming down his face, Tim nodded.

Abused as a walking GPS, Yana threw him away once she saw Luka inside an empty lecture hall.

"Luka!" Yana shouted with vigour making him flinch. She raced to his table, her beautiful smile illuminated by the sunshine cast from the windows and her long hair flowing with every movement.

Yet Luka was unfazed, "What?" he only asked before looking at his book again.

"A month! We got a month for the project. You didn't even come to ask me about it, I had to waste so much effort to find you," Yana sat opposite to Luka who raised his eyebrow and looked at the soggy form of the guy lying on the ground outside.

"Don't mind him," Yana waved the evil aura surrounding her away, "Let's talk about the project. You're the brains and I'm your assistant."

"In other words," Luka closed his book and rested his head on his palm as he looked at Yana with a sharp gaze, "I have to do all the work."

"Bingo! Glad you caught on well!" Yana started to pull out some documents she'd prepared while Luka was visibly stunned.

She admitted to it so fast?

"You're not ashamed of confessing you're bad?"

"Nope," Yana spread the documents on the table, "I leave everything to you, you just need to tell me what to do and I'll assist you."

Luka regretted. He should've never agreed.

"By the way, what are you studying?" Yana cluelessly looked at him.

Yes, he should've never agreed.
