hiccup's disgusted face was making elina roll on the floor, laughing. toothless had just regurgitated half of the fish out, making hiccup groan in disgust.
chameleon muttered unhappily, "i guess he's okay, although he looks smaller than a terror."
elina turned to look at chameleon. "hey! don't say that."
"yeah, it's an offence to flame."
elina blinked, then turned her back towards chameleon.
chameleon rolled her eyes and laid down on the dirt. elina patted chameleon on the head as the dragon seeped with jealousy, her eyes narrowed towards hiccup.
elina leaned against the tree as she watched hiccup attempt to bite the raw fish without vomiting it back up. she sniggered as toothless told elina, "why isn't he eating the fish? i literally gave him some! for free!"
"just because he's a viking doesn't mean he eats raw fish, toothless," elina told toothless quietly, careful not to let hiccup hear her. she watched toothless's expression turn into a sheepish one.
"oops."
hiccup smiled uncomfortably as he forced himself to swallow the fish. elina watched hiccup smile hesitantly at toothless, and she saw toothless try to mimic his grin. he failed, and with a frustrated snarl, darted away to sleep.
elina walked towards hiccup. "not bad for a newbie, haddock," elina smiled at hiccup. hiccup raised his eyebrows.
"thanks... i guess?"
"you're not going to tell anyone about this, are you?"
"no. the vikings are probably gonna have my head if they knew i took their fish and gave it to dragons." hiccup sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "what do i do?"
elina shrugged. wasn't really her problem, but she did feel like she had to help. in some way. "i don't know. figure out your priorities, i guess." at hiccup's conflicted look, elina sighed, and she sat down on the grass. hiccup sat next to her.
"how many years old are you?"
"15. you?"
"16." elina debated a bit on whether she should tell hiccup, but decided that it was better for him to know now than never.
"when you were 10, so i was 11, we had a dragon invasion. i don't remember seeing you, but there was blood shed everywhere, both viking and dragon. i... didn't want to hurt them." basically, she could understand what they were saying and she realized they were just like her. but she wasn't going to tell hiccup that yet. "so, when the villagers realized that i didn't want to fight, they sentenced me to two more years of dragon training. but i didn't want to kill a dragon. i didn't want to hurt them either. my mother and father had died a few days after the invasion as well when stoick demanded them to find the dragon's nest. their ship sunk.
"i became angry and vengeful towards stoick since he just brushed my parents death off, like he didn't care about that. 'we're vikings, it's an occupational hazard.' i didn't have any friends because the others thought i was weird since i didn't want to hurt dragons. so, i had nothing to stay in berk for. i escaped, and i've been taken care of by chameleon ever since. and to make up for my mistakes, as atonement, i started a dragon sanctuary where i take care of dragons who have been hurt by berk."
elina finished up and saw hiccup looking at her in admiration, sadness and a sort of empathy. he gently laced their hands together. a jolt of electricity shot through the places where their hands touched.
"i'm sorry. you're really brave, you know."
"it's not your fault, haddock. don't worry about me." she pulled her hand away from hiccup, confused about the strange feeling she was getting. her hand felt cold without his hold. "so tell me, how's berk?"
a long talk ensued between the two teenagers, elina and hiccup decided to think of a plan to impress toothless.
"drawing, haddock?" elina asked hiccup curiously. "i didn't know there were drawing classes in berk now."
"no, there isn't. i just liked drawing and designing. maybe i'll draw toothless? flatter him a bit?"
elina laughed. toothless was very vain. he might like it. "sure, go for it."
after a while, toothless woke up hanging from the tree like a bat. elina watched as toothless found hiccup drawing in the sand. elina saw toothless take a branch from the tree, and start drawing on the sand as well.
hiccup stepped on toothless's lines, and toothless bared his teeth. hiccup then removed his feet from the line, and toothless swished his tail in satisfaction. hiccup looked at elina in reassurance, and the girl gave him an encouraging nod.
slowly but surely, hiccup managed to get to the center of the maze where toothless was sitting patiently. the two were face to face, and finally, hiccup offered toothless a hand. toothless, after a pause, nudged his face towards hiccup's palm.
toothless quickly ran away to go to chameleon. elina walked towards hiccup, a look of approval on her face.
she never thought the son of stoick would have such a bond with dragons, but here were two vikings, side by side with two dragons in the clearing. elina's heart skipped a beat as she looked at hiccup, and they grinned at each other.
"not bad for a newbie, haddock."
