elina gertrude probably should've locked the fence gate.
but now elina was busy nearly pulling her hair out, trying to locate the black dragon that had flown away.
chameleon lazily picked the grass, growling in annoyance. "yet another one of toothless's escapes," elina's dragon said boredly. elina got up from kneeling at the grass, and threw a pebble at her head, watching it bounce off harmlessly. chameleon snorted.
"gee, thanks for the help," elina muttered. there was a moment of impatient silence between the two of them where elina continued digging, before elina stood up suddenly, holding a fish bone that was buried in between the stacks of grass.
chameleon batted the fish bone from elina's hand, and sniffed it. the dragon put her tail over her nose, huffing a hoop of smoke in front of elina's face. elina watched chameleon's expression expectantly.
"berk." chameleon said calmly, as elina's blood ran cold.
"berk?" she nearly shrieked, turning the dragon's head to look at the angry ginger. some of the dragons whispered to each other, worried for toothless's scolding that was about to come, and others merely scoffed, wrapping a tail over their ears to muffle the sound. "he went to berk? oh my thor, has he learned nothing?"
chameleon shrugged before tossing the fish bone away, letting a baby dragon pick up the remains. elina groaned, squeezing the bridge of her nose.
she sighed.
"let's go get that idiot." elina said determinedly.
chameleon rolled her eyes, but still allowed elina to climb onto her back, and chameleon rose into the sky as her wings flapped. elina breathed a sigh as the wind hit her straight in the face, and followed the messily hidden tracks out of the sanctuary.
elina flew on chameleon, who turned herself invisible by the time they reached berk so elina could hide over the clouds. elina watched the dragons zoom towards the fish, and elina felt a bitter anger prick at her stomach as she was reminded of the ruthlessness of berk.
she was broken out of her thoughts by chameleon. "you're not at berk anymore. you're with us."
elina smiled reassuringly, although every part of her was telling her to leave berk. but she couldn't leave toothless behind, so elina kept an eye out for the night fury.
a terrible terror flew across her, but due to his wing being damaged, he couldn't fly properly. elina watched in sympathy as the tiny dragon struggled to flap his wings. at his look of pain, elina asked, "do you need any help?"
the terrible terror's eyes widened, and he nearly toppled from the sky out of surprise. "you can talk to me?" he gasped shyly, sounding much like an excited little child rather than the monsters vikings painted them to be.
elina smiled. "yeah, i can," she said hesitantly. before he could ask anything, elina said quickly, "uh, do you want some help with your wing? it looks like it's fractured."
"oh," the terrible terror's eyes became saddened, "i've always been like this. the vikings shot my wing when i was a baby, and no one can fix it anymore." elina's eyes hardened as she stared at the screaming vikings again.
"i'm sorry," elina said quietly. the terrible terror flapped one of his wings happily, shaking his head.
"don't be. it's not your fault."
but it is.
"what's your name, anyways?" elina distracted herself from her thoughts, smiling at the terrible terror.
"i don't have one," he said hesitantly, his eyes becoming wide. "what's your name? are you going to give me one?"
"uh, my name is elina. and sure, i can give you a name. how about..." elina looked at his tiny, red body. "flame?"
way to be original, elina, she thought to herself, but flame looked happy with his new name, so elina didn't have the heart to change it.
"flame," flame repeated his name slowly. "flame. flame. flame!" he said, flying around in circles, but nearly falling again.
"calm down, buddy," elina said, stroking the terrible terror's head, allowing a tiny purr to emerge from his throat. "go home safely."
"bye bye, elina!" a small smile appeared on her face as she waved goodbye to flame.
once he was out of viewing range, chameleon told elina, "you're not a viking anymore. whoever judges you for your past is stupid."
elina pat chameleon on her head. "thanks, chameleon."
chameleon growled softly. suddenly, a ball of fire shot towards the two of them, and chameleon managed to dodge just in time, but elina wasn't so lucky. too distracted in her thoughts, elina didn't duck fast enough, and she was flung towards raven point.
chameleon screeched loudly, and dove towards the falling shadow of elina. elina felt wind blowing across her ginger hair, and suddenly, she landed on something hard. a sharp jet of pain shot through her back, and her face turned pale. something wet trickled down her face, and she could see a small pool of something red surrounding her waist.
an anguished scream tore through her vocal chords, and elina was left whimpering on the forest floor, unable to move. elina felt pain all over her body, and whimpers wracked her body. there was a burn on her clothes, and elina heard chameleon say, "elina, don't close your eyes."
elina's world turned into darkness.
