hiccup looked at snotlout and elina in jealousy. rage burned in his gut as he heard snotlout ask elina, "won't you go out with me, gorgeous?"

hiccup turned his gaze away, but he still listened to their conversation. hiccup felt elina's gaze on him, and for a second, he wanted to turn his head back, but he knew she was going to go out with snotlout anyways, so what was the point?

besides, she was just his friend. he had no right to be angry over her dating preferences. so, he heard elina answer, "uh, sure, princess." hiccup clenched his jaw angrily, and he saw astrid eyeing the two of them with a furious gaze. 

snotlout whooped and stood on the table. "elina gertrude's going with me!" he yelled, and elina rolled her eyes with a grin on her face. she punched him to the ground. 

"don't act all cocky about it, you muttonhead," elina said. hiccup watched elina smile with an unfamiliar feeling in his stomach that made him churn. astrid looked at hiccup expectantly.

"well, i guess it's either me, ruffnut or your fangirls now," astrid told hiccup resentfully, still looking at snotlout and elina's direction angrily. 

"yeah, i'll go with you."

"as friends."

"definitely."

hiccup spent the rest of the night moping, and elina definitely noticed. 

"uh, are you okay?"

"yeah."

elina flinched at his cold tone, but she didn't prod anymore. hiccup felt guilty and wanted to apologize, but he was pulled away by stoick to continue his training before he could say sorry to elina. 

hiccup noticed that whenever he and elina was in a room, he would immediately look at elina, but instead of him, snotlout was next to her, clinging onto her like an annoying bug that it wouldn't dispel. elina looked slightly exasperated by snotlout's comments, and hiccup wanted nothing more to just swoop elina into his arms.

astrid and hiccup talked a bit more. they spent most of their time together, since snotlout was hanging out with elina, and hiccup found that astrid wasn't actually so bad. he was often reminded of why he used to have a crush on her back when he was 15 when the two of them talked and joked around. 

and he found with elina, they didn't talk anymore (like back when they used to. god it was so simple back then.) elina looked happy with snotlout. snotlout was a flirt; with dark hair, blue eyes that glimmered like diamonds and an average height, he was highly sought after by many of the maidens of berk.

he's going to break your heart, ellie, hiccup thought as snotlout flirted with a brown-haired girl who giggled flirtatiously and put a hand on his bicep. hiccup rolled his eyes and turned back to astrid, who looked at snotlout in a way that made hiccup fear for snotlout's life.

"i hate him," astrid muttered. hiccup snorted in response, feeling bad for elina who was blissfully unaware. since after all this time, hiccup still liked elina. and thor, elina made him so confused all the time. she kissed him when she was 16, but they never enacted on their feelings.

he still remembered the butterflies in his stomach; how the sun seemed to shine a little bit brighter when she laughed, how her sweet, honey brown eyes glowed when she sent him looks across the room. 

but if they were just friends, then why didn't he feel the same way when he looked at astrid? why didn't he feel the same way when he looked at ruffnut? why was it just when he looked at elina gertrude that his heart felt like it wanted to leap out of its chest; that he was instantly drawn to her like an enigma?

but they didn't talk anymore. not ever since she agreed to go with snotlout, and even though it was just two days, it felt like the two longest days of his life. he just realized how much of his time he spent with elina, how he remembered every single thing about her.

snotlout had no idea about hiccup and elina. he would never understand, because hiccup was there first. his eyes followed elina's form as she walked towards snotlout, snotlout immediately shrugging off the brown-haired girl and grinning at elina.

he gritted his teeth. his green eyes burned in fury as snotlout kissed elina on the cheek, watching elina roll her eyes and push snotlout away. he hated snotlout in that moment, and he immediately stood up from seat and walked towards snotlout and elina.

he shoved snotlout to the floor. "what's wrong with you, bro?" snotlout said angrily, but elina looked at him in shock and rage.

she shoved him back. "what was that for?" elina yelled at hiccup, but hiccup was blinded by jealousy.

"you were obviously uncomfortable by his contact!" hiccup shouted in response, ignoring all the people that had gathered to watch their argument.

"you didn't have to fucking shove him to the floor! you could've just talked to me, like a normal person!"

i'm sorry, i didn't mean it.

"yeah well, he deserved it." hiccup hissed, his eyes dilated. elina rolled her eyes.

"as if! you've been ignoring me for the past few days and the only time when you come to talk to me is because of your pettiness? you're so blinded by your own stupid insecurities that you don't even realize how other people are feeling!" elina looked at hiccup with regret.

hiccup felt a burst of anger.

"fine! you've been too busy hanging out with your cool new friends and whatever that you've just been ignoring me! is it wrong to just want to talk to you with snotlout being there all the time? honestly, it's so hard to be friends with you. you have so much walls that you don't trust anyone, and you just immediately opened up to snotlout? how unfair is that!" hiccup crossed his arms across his chest. 

"oh my gods," elina had tears in her eyes, "this isn't a matter of fairness! it's you not learning how to accept that i can have more than one friend!" 

"well, he doesn't just look like a friend! what kind of friends kiss each other and say, 'oh, we're just friends'?"

elina and hiccup's face both turned into realization as they both realized the hypocrisy of his words. the flashback both played in their heads, but elina quickly snapped out of it.

"can you stop being such an asshole for one second?"

and hiccup wanted to tell elina he didn't mean it. he meant nothing. he loved her. god, why did he have to ruin everything?

she stormed off to her house. the door slammed so hard that even valhalla could hear her anger, and without looking at anyone, hiccup walked off to the opposite direction, taking the long way back to his house.

he couldn't sleep that night.
