After that Mitch became down in himself. He tried to not show it but I saw when he thought I wasn't looking. He slumped around a lot more. So I decided he needed a change of scenery. He needed to go somewhere. To get out of town.
We were on our walk around the park down the road. It was a late Saturday afternoon. I could see my breath even though the sun was shining, it was freezing.
There was a group of kids playing soccer just to the left of the path. They were laughing and running around, slipping in the mud of the latest rainfall. A group of mothers pushing prams walked in front of us, catching up on gossip no doubt.
We walked in comfortable silence, swinging our interlocked hands, dramatically between us. I caught Mitch eyeing the park benches a couple times and that was when I realised how much he was limping. More than usual. I checked my phone and saw that we had been walking for half an hour, no wonder.
"Do you want to sit down?" I asked leading him over to a park bench next to a large oak tree. He nodded but pulled me away from the bench, going towards the tree. He let go of my hand and I watched as he slid down the trunk of the tree. Patting the space next to him, he smiled. I walked over and sat down next to him.
I threw my hand over his shoulder and he cuddled into my side. "I've got some news." I whispered. Mitch looked up at me, his forehead crinkling as he raised his eyebrows. I noticed that his beard wasn't growing anymore. His head was patchy too. His hair was probably falling out. He obviously didn't want me to notice as he hadn't said anything. His lips were cracked and blue. His eyes still shone brightly though whenever I looked at him. They seemed to be the only thing that hadn't changed about him.
"I've got a present for you!" I said in a sing song tone. Mitch's eyes widened and he turned into a five year old. Slapping his hands down onto my legs, he smiled brightly.
"What is it? What is it?" He exclaimed impatiently. He kneeled up so he could face me. I held his hands still and watched his face as his eyes twinkled. The sun light shone perfectly onto his face making his features more visible. Under his eyes although tired looking seemed to lift. His nose although red with the cold pointed out perfectly.
I reached into my back pocket and pulled out an envelope. "Why don't you open this then?" I asked. He snatched it out of my hand, licking his lips as he teared into it. His eyes widened even further as he read the pieces of paper inside.
"Scott, you did not! You did not! Oh my god!" He squealed jumping into my arms, pinning me against the tree. "Thank you! I can't believe I get to go to Iceland!" He shrieked. I wrapped my arms around him, hiding my face in his shoulder, smiling brightly. I hadn't seen him this happy in what seemed like forever.
"You are the best boyfriend ever!" He said leaning back to look at me. He was straddling my waist, my hands had slipped down to the base of his back.
"I know." I whispered, smiling up at him. He winked at me, quickly leaning in and capturing my lips for a slow, passionate kiss.
"When are we going?" He asked pulling back. I pointed out the dates on the tickets. "10th of March. Scott, that's next week! Have you asked the doctors? What if they don't let me go?" He asked frantically. He gripped my hands tightly by his side.
"All sorted. I've talked to them and they said you could go. You only need to have chemo once over there. We're going for a week." I assured him. His smiled returned to his face and he squealed, wrapping me into a hug again.
We began to walk home after that. Mitch held my hand tighter than earlier. He was tired, I could tell. About half way down the road he slowed down to a near stop. "I just need to take a break." He whispered.
I turned my back to him and pointed at it. "I'll give you a piggy back home." I said. I felt him grab onto my shoulders. I grabbed his thighs and pulled him up onto my back. I picked up his oxygen tank and wrapped the strap around my hand and began to walk.
"It's bouncy up here." Mitch giggled as we turned a corner. We passed a woman. Her eyes fell on the oxygen tank in my hands. She then scanned up my body and saw Mitch wrapped around my shoulders. She then found my eyes, giving me a smile full of absolute pity. That nearly shot me down to the ground. I didn't need to be pitied. Neither of us did. Pity is like a mockery.
I kicked the apartment door open and called out. "Hello!" There was no answer. Everyone was out. "We're alone, Mitchy. What should we do?" I asked.
His lips became very close to my ear as he whispered. "I've got a couple of ideas." A shock of shivers slid down my spine. Each word dripped with lust.
I slowly walked towards Mitch's bedroom. He was still wrapped around my shoulders. I released him onto the bed and he knelt up.
I turned around and he wrapped his arms around my neck. I rested my forehead against his and we locked eyes. "You're beautiful." Mitch whispered, his voice cracking.
I slowly closed the gap between us, connecting our lips. My mind went blank and Mitch and I seemed to be the only people that excited in the world at that very moment. I felt Mitch's hand move from behind my neck to my face and then dragging down to the neck of my shirt. He pulled it into a ball in his hand.
I felt Mitch's tongue drag along my bottom lip asking for entrance and I gladly let him enter. His tongue massaged in and of my mouth sending rushes of pleasure fly around my body like fireworks.
I felt Mitch tug on my shirt, pulling me down to lie on top of him on the bed. I immediately disconnected our lips, sitting up. Mitch pouted at me, trying to pull me back down to his lips. "I don't know if I can, Mitch." I whispered my lips inches from his.
"Why? Come on, no ones home." He whispered connecting our lips again. I pulled away, placing my arm beside his head, holding my body up.
"I don't want to hurt you." I said.
"You're not going to hurt me. I know you won't." He said. Our lips were inches from each other and it took all of me to keep off of him. I didn't know what to do.
"I don't know what to do." I whispered. My voice was barely audible as our bodies were so close.
Mitch looked me up and down and whispered. "Give in."
