The weeks went on and Mitch and I became extremely close again. By the end of the first two weeks of high school we had been to each other's house more times than I could count on my hands. We knew more about each other than anyone else did.

His dad and mom, Mike and Nel, became my second set of parents. They were the nicest parents ever apart from mine of course.

On the Monday of our fourth week back was when it happened. I walked into class my usual smile on my face. I always tried to smile as much as I could around the school. Everyone seemed so unhappy, the place needed a little lightening up and I planned on doing it one person at a time.

I walked in the door of my class and there was a large group of guys standing around Mitch's desk. They created a kind of wall. So much so that I couldn't actually see Mitch.

I pushed through the group of boys and saw that the biggest one, who I recognized as Rob Rogers. He was in my Math class. He was obviously the leader of the group. He had Mitch pressed up against the desk, his hand clenching tightly around a fistful of his sweater. Rob's nose was nearly touching his face, he was so close. Mitch's face was red with anger and pain, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. He looked like he had been hit round the head.

"Say it kid. Say it or I'll punch you into next week!" Rob growled at him, his teeth snarling like a wild dog ready to catch it's prey.

"I can't say it. Please, don't make me say it! Please!" Mitch pleaded. He moved his hands in front of his face just in time before Rob smacked him hard.

I lost it at that. The anger inside me boiling over the top.

"Don't you dare touch him!" I shouted, flinging myself at Rob and knocking him to the ground. I pinned his hands above his head. Then he did the worst thing. He laughed. He moved his knee up quickly, right in the crotch. He took advantage of my pain and rolled us over so he was on top, my arms now pinned to the ground.

"Great, the other one's here! Come to rescue your boyfriend? You know I never thought this of you Scott. We could be friends you know. Good friends. But you are just like him." He grabbed Mitch and pulled him to the ground next to me. I struggled to try and get free but he was too strong.

I needed to protect Mitch at all costs. He was the one that could not get hurt. He was already hurt enough.

Rob flew punches at both of our faces. Each blow more painful then the last. One to my eye. Another to Mitch's nose. He grabbed the back of our heads and started to push them together.

"Why don't you two just make out right here, right now." He snarled. He let out a loud cackle as Mitch and I's noses hit off of each other. I could see the pain in his eyes. His face screwed up and blood dripping from his forehead. He didn't deserve that. No one deserved that.

"That's it!" I screamed. I used all my might to push him off of me sending a swinging fist towards his face. I didn't stop punching until I felt his skin under my fist. I had hit him square in the nose. This knocked him backwards and he fell against the floor. He looked startled and dazed.

"I would hit you again but that would make me just like you." I said standing up. I looked around to see all the kids of the class standing around. Everyone of their eyes on me. Everyone of their mouths wide open.

Then my eyes fell onto the two teachers standing with their eyebrows raised and their arms crossed.

My vision became suddenly blurry and my head started to pound. I felt my legs give way and I fell to the ground. A blow coming to the side of my ribs as Rob stuck his leg out.

"Scott!" I heard Mitch shout. He jumped to his feet and to my side. I watched as the crowd of kids parted and the teachers came rushing to my side.
