Make It Stop

That night was possibly the longest night of my life. I went back inside when it was starting to get dark. Mitch's mom and dad were sat on either side of his bed. They looked like they had been crying for hours on end. I didn't blame them, Mitch was their son. Their only son.

I know Mitch hated seeing his parents cry. He would always put the full blame on himself. I couldn't hardly bare to think what his mind was going through right now.

Just as I got to the end of Mitch's bed both of his parents stood. We hadn't told them that we were together yet. We wanted to wait until we could Skype both of our parents at the same time. We didn't know how they'd react.

So I guess it would have been more than a little bit of a shock when they came in and saw us kissing. They didn't say anything though.

"We're going to go and find somewhere to stay for the night." Mike whispered. He voice was shaky and weak.

"Here, stay at our place." I handed him the keys and he nodded. Mike pulled me into an unexpected hug.

"Thank you, Scott." He said to me. He let me go and I turned to Nel. She pulled me into a tight hug too.

"Take care of him." She warned.

"Yes ma'am." I answered. They left after that.

I sat down on the chair next to Mitch's bed. He looked across at me and smiled. It wasn't his usual beaming smile. There was something behind it. Pain. I smiled back and interlocked his fingers with mine. His hands were ice cold. I rubbed them together between mine to try and warm them. He giggled a little, leading to a loud cough.

"Are you hurting?" I asked, kissing up his arm.

"A little." He answered. I closed my eyes, my lips pressed against his wrist. I took a deep breath and sniffed back the tears.

Just then, Dr Prendergast walked up to the bed. "We'll talk you through the chemotherapy tomorrow, Mitch. For now try and get some sleep. If you need anything don't fret to call for the nurse." Mitch nodded and the doctor walked away.

"Will you stay with me?" Mitch asked. He snuggled down in the bed, cuddling into my hand. He wasn't going to let go even if I said I was leaving.

"Of course, I will." I said as Mitch's eyes drifted closed. He seemed to instantly fall asleep.

I sat back into the chair and pulled out my phone, I saw Kirstie had text a couple hours back. 'Any news?' I was scared to answer. I didn't want to tell her because that was Mitch's choice. But I also didn't want to leave her worrying and now I had read the message so she would see.

'Staying for the night. You might want to come down in the morning. We're in UCLA.' I sent the text off and locked my phone, turning it on silent.

I rested my head against the back of the chair, my eyes trained on Mitch. His breathing was shallow even though he was asleep. He was still cuddling into my hand. His lips were slightly parted and he now had a cannula wrapped around his ears.

I closed my eyes and slowly let myself drift off to sleep. It felt like I had only just closed my eyes when the blood flow in my hand began to get cut off. Shoots of pain flowing up my arm and a muffled scream was coming from my left.

My eyes snapped open and my head flew up. I turned to look at Mitch who was struggling to breath. "It hurts." He cried out in pain.

I hit the button beside his bed. Mitch still had hold of my hand but he also had both of his hands holding tightly one on his arm the other on his chest. He tilted his head back and started breathing extremely heavily.

His face turned a yellow colour and I began to panic. "Someone help, please!" I screamed repeatedly hitting the button beside his bed. "Breath Mitch, breath." I soothed.

"It hurts, I can't. Make it stop." He began to rock back and forth holding his chest and arm in pain.

That was when a nurse turned up, she took one look at Mitch and ran straight to his side. She tried to get me out of the way but Mitch wouldn't let go. I uncurled his fingers from my hand and stepped back so she could get to him.

She pulled up a trolley with some needles and tablets on it. She filled one of the needles with a clear liquid and then pressed it into Mitch's arm. She then helped him calm his breathing.

She scurried off and returned again with a plastic bag like object filled with a liquid. It had a long tube coming out of it. She hung it up with the IV drip and then pushed the tube into the catheter in his hand.

She watched Mitch's face turn back to normal. The pain disappearing from his face.

"I'll get a doctor to come as soon as possible to check you over." The nurse said turning the corner.

Mitch shut his eyes tightly and I watch as a tear slipped down his face. I leaned over and kissed each one of them away. His eyes fluttered open and he smiled. "Sorry for scarring you." He whispered.

"It's not your fault." I whispered back. Mitch placed his arms around the back of my neck and pulled me in for a slow, powerful kiss. His lips felt chapped and cold. It was because he was breathing deeper recently.

I broke away and sat back down. I put my hand in his again and stroked the back of it with my thumb. He had lost quite a lot of weight in the last few weeks and the bones and veins were a lot more prominent in his hands. I slowly traced my thumb around the bones, in and out of every space between them.

"I love you, Mitch." I whispered.

"I love you too, Scott." He answered.
