Xavier POV

The distinct sound of machines was the only thing heard in the hospital. Many people had already left while some stayed overnight. Soft snores were heard right next to me where Nariah laid. Light pressure from her little head resting on my broad shoulders was enough to tell me that she was knocked out.

The specialized doctor Samaiah had contacted was already here and in the operation room. She left to get us some food, especially for Nariah since she was hungry. She insisted on staying here with me for extra support and help. Though hunger was the last thing I was worried about. Once Iris and our baby is safe, only then will I take it into consideration.

Beep. A door slid open with wind rushing out from it. It was the emergency room door, where Iris was being operated.

"Sir," The Doctor walked up towards me with a clipboard in hand. I immediately rose from my seat and placed Nariah's head gently on one of the cushions. I walked up towards the doctor eagerly to know how Iris was.

"How is she?" I breathed out in anxiousness. The doctor looked at me with a regretful look that made my heart drop. My eyebrows etched together as she seemed to have noticed my worry.

"Mr. Queen," She announced and looked at me before casting her eyes down on the paper. "I'm afraid to tell you that your wife's condition is critical. She is due in a matter of time and we need your word in order to either save her or the baby's life. Under these circumstances there is not much we can do-"

"No," I whispered and shook my head. "Iris is fine, and so is the baby. So stop telling me otherwise."

The doctor looked at me as if she was concerned and shook her head. "Mrs. Queen is in a critical situation and we need an answer immediately. If not, both the mother and baby's life will be at risk. Please, give us your final word."

Final word?

"For what?! Choosing wether or not my baby dies or the love of my life? That's ridiculous! Iris is fine and so is our baby, now go and wake her up." I closed my eyes as tears threatened to fall. She is okay, and so is our baby.

"Please Mr. Queen! We urgently need an answer before the mother and child die." The doctor looked at me anxiously waiting for a response.

A warm liquid was already pouring down my eyes as I hastily wiped it away. Iris or our baby. Iris or our baby.

As much as I wanted to tell the doctor to save both of them, the expression on her face already told me that was not possible.

Who knew this is where my life would be, choosing between the one person I truly love and our symbol of love, our child. I'll never be able to name my child with Iris. I'll never be able to see my child's first steps with Iris. I'll never be able to keep both of them. I'll never-

"Iris, I-I need to see her. Only then will I make the decision." I spat out in a hurry. The doctor looked nervously at me and the door before finally nodding. I didn't waste any time to finally go inside only to see Iris in the operation room with a mask on to help her breathing supply. The sight made my heart clench in worry.

"Is she awake?" I asked as my gaze never faltered from Iris.

"Yes, slightly. If you would like to make the decision with her, it will have to be quick." I nodded at the doctors words before walking up to Iris laying on the bed. Her stomach was shown as well as the baby bump. I could tell the doctors and nurses were waiting for either helping Iris give birth or saving her. Her eyes were shut and breathing was steady as could be.

"What should I do." I whispered and brushed a strand of her hair aside. Small droplets of my tears fell onto Iris's soft cheeks that looked more hollow than usual. It pained me to see her in such a condition, but to make matters worse I had to make a decision. One that would affect my life as well as hers.

"You got this." I placed a small kiss on her forehead without waking her up. That wasn't what I wanted or needed to do. Right now it was about saving a life, and I knew exactly who.
