Third Person POV

Deep breaths; in and out. Iris reminded herself that this will be hard but easier as it goes by.

What scares her the most is thinking that Carla has changed. Not everything has been the same and a lot has changed over time. It always does.

Her mother, Carla, must have her reasons as to why she left. But then again, Iris knows part of it is because of her father.

She walked inside the house which smelt like freshly coated paint and blueberry pie. Pie? She asked herself.

Her mother wasn't exactly the best at baking, especially when it comes to pie, so this was very unusual. She took in the wooden flooring and a long hallway. The walls were plain white and a small chandelier was hanging in the middle, illuminating light.

Iris looked over at Xavier with a confused expression on her face and he gave her a reassuring nod. Was this the right house? No one was in sight so she took a few steps forward into the long hallway and Xavier followed right behind her.

Each step was followed by Iris's heartbeat as she got more anxious and nervous to finally see her mother.
All of her thoughts were thrown out of the window once she took her last step and stopped. The memory of the day Iris's father threw her mother out of the house and forbade her to ever meet her again replayed back.

Iris's eyes stung with tears as she saw her mother standing right in front of her. The loud noise of the pans falling out of Carla's hands were evident once she realized she had visitors.

The room was completely silent for awhile and Iris wiped her tears. Her mother hadn't quite changed much over the last three years. She was still as beautiful as the day she last saw her except this time she actually looked happy. The wrinkles on her forehead and cheeks were more evident than before, that's all.

"M-mom," Iris whispered. It felt unreal. Time had almost stopped entirely for this moment.

Carla's eyes roamed Iris and she had clearly noticed the baby bump. She smiled and looked at her daughter who was once her baby. Iris was a mother to be and Carla felt her world being crushed because she was never there for her daughter who was left with her abusive ex husband, Sam.

"Baby," Carla walked towards Iris and her hands instinctively landed on her stomach. At that moment, Iris had a genuine smile on her face. It was like everything was complete. Her mothers touch was warm and welcoming.

"How are you? How did this happen? Are you okay?" Her mother asked in concern as she pulled Iris into a hug.

The familiar scent her mother had was still there and it helped with the tension still clear in the room. "Yes, I'm fine," Iris answered as she pulled back.

"Can we talk?" She asked and Carla nodded but looked over at the other guest she had. Iris knew they had to catch up on a lot that has happened and it will bring back lots of memories. Good and bad.

"Mom, this is my husband, Xavier." Iris felt a little uneasy introducing Xavier to her mother because it would not have been normal until now. She never thought this day would have come but somehow it did.

Carla looked at Iris like what she had said was a joke. "Very funny. Iris, I know we have gone through a lot in the past few years but this is not the way to sta-" but before she could finish Iris interrupted and rephrased her words.
