The first part of shifting is the F-Shift, which has many parts to it that you MUST understand, so bear with me, okay?
You need to understand the following:
- Personality
What type of personality do you think merfolk have? What do you think your sub-species of merfolk behaves like? Try acting it out to give yourself a feel for it so that it's easier for when you shift.
- Diet
I can't break this down better than the creators of the MermaidCorner weebly so here's a screenshot of what they wrote for this part:
- Activities
Recreational activities that gives your merperson spirit a boost would be swimming and water-based activities. This also gives you an advantage in the water when you fully shift as it helps with avoiding predators such as hunters or sharks. Sports and activities such as soccer or football won't really help you. Plus, you'll feel more at home in the water the more you shift and swim.
- Meditation
Again, these ladies sum up the meditation process perfectly, so here's another capture from their website.
- Sleeping Cycle
Healthy sleep schedule means healthy body and happy mer! Meditation is really good for your sleep cycle and staying up late on your phone or having fun times is not going to benefit you. Unless forced to stay up, or you have to sneak to a body of water/try a spell, stay in bed and get that much needed rest! Again, meditation will really help this! If it feels like too big of a commitment to you, you aren't ready. Just focus on meditating until you are.
- Knowledge
How will you survive if you know nothing about the ocean? About your sub-species of merfolk? You'll need knowledge on the basic biology of a merperson (male or female), and your chosen sub-species. You will also need to know the basics of where you will be swimming, the predators there, and what you should be eating, what's poisonous, what has a lot of nutrients, water level and pressure, your limit for where you can go without imploding, where hot-spots for merfolk activities are, that general idea. Your survival in the sea is really dependent on your knowledge about it.
Please look at this website as it was really useful to me for all the shifting steps. There are many more sources obviously, but this is the most useful one that I could find. Here is the link for the shifting section:

This is just the shifting section, however their whole website was really useful so definitely check it out!
Signing off for now,
