While I waited for Star to get dressed, I reached out to the owner of the club I'd saved Star from that fight. It seemed with enough money, I could get whatever I wanted—including security footage from that night. After I transferred him the agreed money, it took little to no time at all for the footage to arrive to my phone.
Before I could press play, Star called my name from the hall. Turning off my screen, I shoved the phone into my back pocket and followed.
The day before was a Wednesday, and since things were still up in the air, I asked Gun to spend the day with Star. I did my usual rounds, stopped off to see my father and Win's mother, then picked up cakes on my way back.
The trip to Win's grave was different. The fact I was beginning to develop some very complicated feelings for Star weighed heavily on my heart.
"Are you disappointed, P?" I asked, sitting in front of the grave. "P'Eagle said you would want me to move on. The truth is, I haven't tried very hard over the years. I didn't feel as if I deserved a second chance."
It seemed Star had been trying to speak with me and I was distracted so he tapped my shoulder.
"I'll drive." He told me, extending his hand for the key.
I didn't argue. Instead, I climbed into the passenger side and pulled my belt on.
"Are you okay?" Star asked. "You've been off since your day off."
While Star spoke to his father, I wasn't really paying attention. The truth was, I had wanted to go meet with Eagle while they had their meeting. Still, Star asked me to stay, and I caved. While they talked, I watched Star. We'd made love two days before, and while he hasn't voiced any regrets, his shyness around me had changed.
He was even more so.
Each time he caught me staring, his cheeks would flush, and his eyes instantly fell to the floor.
He dragged his fingers through his hair then turned to look at me—his cheeks flushed, and he bowed his head. Shaking my head, I looked over to see his father was watching me intently. I cleared my throat, pulled my legs up and leaned forward to rest my elbows on my knees.
"And leads?" His father asked.
"Not for the original problem. I have a friend of mine running down a lead right now, but I don't know what will come of it." I told him pointedly. "Like I said before, it isn't one of the scuffles and it has nothing to do with your work. My next try will be his business."
"Mine?" Star asked. "My clients and the people I worked with aren't capable of this."
"Anyone is capable of anything." His father muttered.
"I'm going to have to agree with that." I told them. "I need this to be over with. I can't spend the rest of my life on this."
"P..." Star whispered.
We finished the meeting with his father, and I allowed him to drive us back. Instead of going to the house, I found we were going in the opposite direction.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"On a date." Star replied then shook his head. "Lunch."
I smirked. "Are you kidnapping me for a date, Star?"
"I am doing no such thing." Star sputtered. "I just felt like, you didn't have breakfast and I didn't have breakfast and since we're both human at some point we have to put food in our stomachs because if not we could both die and I—"
"Humans also breathe, Star." I told him. "If you keep rambling, I'll have to kiss you."
He paused for a moment as if trying to figure if he should call my bluff. The look on his face caused me to laugh as I unclipped my seatbelt after he turned off the engine.
