TW: guns, blood, homophobia

I took my gun out of its holster and kicked our door open. My heart dropped into my stomach. A man in a black mask was holding JJ at gunpoint right in front of me with his hand pressed tightly against her mouth.

"If you scream, she dies."

"Woah, woah, okay calm down... just— let's calm down here." JJ was staring into my eyes; there were tears forming in hers and she looked so afraid.

"Put your gun down! Drop it!"

"Okay! Okay..." I slowly bent to the floor and dropped my gun, rising back up with my hands open for him to see. "Who are you and what do you want?"

"You know me!"

"Not with that mask on, I don't. Why don't you take that off and we can go from there." With confidence, he tore the mask off his face. I recognized him as an ex of mine, "Paulie?"

He smiled maliciously, "That's right, baby."

"What the hell do you want?" I was quickly losing patience but I knew he wouldn't hesitate to kill JJ.

"I thought it was just a sick joke, maybe just a ploy to get me to leave..."

"What was, Paulie?"

"When you broke up with me, a—and told me you were gay. But it's true," pressing the gun harder into JJ's head he said, "I saw you and this fucking bitch last week. Holding hands. Making out. Shit you used to do with me! With a man, like it's supposed to be!" Tears started to stream down JJ's face— a combination of fear and also agony that people like this guy exist and that I used to date him.

"Paulie. Listen to me," he flicked his eyes up at me. I sensed a hint of sadness in them, as if his anger was a mask over that. I used that to my advantage, "You're a great guy. You really were, I just- I couldn't love you anymore. It's not that I didn't want to, it's that I realized it was something I was incapable of. You'll find someone— someone who treated you the way I did and will continue to for the rest of your lives. That's how I feel about Jennifer, okay? I love her, you have to understand that— that feeling of love. Love is a terrible thing to hate, Paulie." At this point, he was crying too. I sent a look to JJ and jerked my head to the side to the side as if to say "Go." She forcefully thrust her elbow back into his abdomen, causing him to step back in pain. In a rush, I grabbed my gun from off the floor and sent a bullet flying into his torso but not before he could shoot one at me.

As the bullet tore through the skin in the top of my shoulder, I fell back onto the hard tile of our kitchen floor. JJ ran over to me, applying pressure to the wound as best as she could. Blood was starting to pool around my body as I lay there, unable to move.

"D-did you g-get his g-g—"

"I have his gun, babe, it's ok. Don't talk save your energy." Lifting one hand off of me, she reached onto the kitchen counter to get her phone— calling 911 first and then Hotch. "You're gonna be ok, Y/N, it's ok. I love you so much, please stay with me." She was sobbing over me uncontrollably.

"It—It's just my s-shoulder. I'm ok." She smiled at that, which made me feel better.

Lightly stroking the side of my face for a second she said, "I know, baby, I know."

"Can we st-still have a party this weekend?" Before she had time to laugh at my determination, the paramedics were at our front door and our apartment erupted into chaos once again.

30 minutes later
Third person POV
JJ paced all around the waiting room of GW University Hospital, waiting for an update on Y/N or at least some company. Always the best friend, Garcia arrived first. As soon as JJ saw her, she ran over to her and was caught in a warm embrace followed by more sobs.

"Oh, sugarplum, I know I know... It's gonna be all right, Jayje" she held JJ's hand as she led her over to some chairs in the waiting area.

"She's still in surgery."

"The doctor said it isn't serious though, right?"

"Not really, I mean it's just her shoulder but I'm just hoping the bullet didn't hit any major arteries or anything." JJ was tracing patterns across Garcia's palm when Reid and Morgan arrived. Hotch and Emily came next. Rossi followed close behind.

Rossi wrapped JJ in a fatherly hug, "How you holding up, kiddo?"

"I'll be fine, Dave."

Emily was in a panic, "How is she? S-She got shot— where did she get shot? Has the doctor been out here yet, because if they haven't just tell me who I have to yell at to—"

"Emily! She was shot in the shoulder, she's still in surgery." Emily sat in a lonely chair a few feet away with her head in her hands, obviously very emotional.

Although it wasn't true, Hotch seemed more concerned about the unsub than Y/N or JJ, "Who did this, JJ? Do either of you know him?"

"Yeah, Y/N did. His name was Paulie— an ex apparently— but I never heard her say anything about him."

"Wait, was?"

"Yeah? Well he's dead... You guys didn't know?" They all looked at each other and shook their heads.

Reid spoke up, "Well that saves us some work."

Morgan still had questions, "You shot him?"

"No, Y/N did. But then she went down." Garcia looked concerned, still sitting next to JJ but now rubbing circles across her back.

"Do you wanna talk about it, pumpkin?"

"Not right now. Now I just want Y/N to be okay."

As if on cue, a doctor came out from Y/N's operating room, "Family of... Y/F/N Y/L/N?" The whole team stood up.
