A/N- this is very fluffy 🥰 focuses on you and JJ's boys... what can I say, I have a soft side

October 10, 2020
Ironically, fighting with JJ ended up working out for the best— we've felt closer to each other since then and agree that it actually strengthened our relationship. I'm grateful because I don't know what I'd do without her. When we first got together, we made a promise that if things didn't work out we'd stay friends to avoid any awkwardness at the BAU. I've made a new promise to myself though: to make sure it does work out. We've been dating for a year and a half now and I'm done calling her my girlfriend— I want her to be my wife. Over the next week or so I'll talk to Emily and Garcia about rings and proposals and all that crap, but right now I need to focus on the present.

Henry and Michael have been at our place for four days in a row this week, but today is their last day here and I wanted to do something special for them. After we ate breakfast together, the boys ran over to the couch to watch cartoons while I helped JJ clean the kitchen.

"JJ, how do you feel about taking the boys to the zoo today?"

"Smithsonian?"

"Yeah, it's close and they always love when we go... it'll be a nice treat before we send them back to Will's."

"I think that's a great idea," she leaned over to kiss me on the cheek, "Wanna go tell 'em?"

I threw the dish towel I was holding onto the counter and headed for the living room where the boys were. They groaned in frustration when I came over and stood in front of the TV, blocking their view.

Henry exclaimed, "Awww, come on! This is Mikey's favorite episode of Spongebob!"

I raised my eyebrows, "Oh okay then I guess we can just stay here all day instead of go to the zoo... fine by me," I started to walk away but was quickly called back.

"No wait wait, Y/N!" They both got up from the couch and ran over to me. Henry wrapped his arms around one of mine and Michael attached himself to my leg.

Mikey begged, "Can we go to zoo? Pwease!"

I pretended to think about it, "Hmmm... I guess so." They started bouncing up and down in excitement. "We can't do anything until you two put some clothes on so giddyup!" They raced to their rooms to go get dressed and I was about to go find JJ so that we could do the same. I turned around and saw her peeking her head around the corner, assuming that she watched our whole interaction.

"You okay, JJ?" I walked over to her and rested my hands on her hips.

She smiled, "I'm perfect. Everything's perfect. You're so good with them."

"They bring out my soft side. I just want them to be happy," she gave me a quick kiss and then dragged me into our bedroom so we could get ready. She put on a pair of leggings and an FBI sweatshirt along with her navy Vans. I went with my good pair of jeans, a comfy quarter zip, and my white Converse.

JJ tossed me a baseball cap from across the room, "It's sunny out, take this too." While she was in the bathroom fixing her hair, I went to go check on the boys.

I knocked on Henry's door first, "Henry, bud, you need any help?"

He shouted through the door, "No thanks, Y/N, I'm almost done!"

I moved down the hall to Michael's room and knocked, "Mikey, you need any help?"

"My shoes won't tie!"

"Okay, can I come in?" I know he's only four but everyone deserves to have their privacy respected. He gave me the okay and I opened the door. He was sitting in his tiny chair with his shoes on but laces hanging on the floor. I squatted down and tied them for him. He got up and ran out of the room, "Fank you!"

I walked back into the kitchen where JJ was packing a backpack for us to take: sunscreen, bottles of water, snacks, one of Michael's stuffed animals, a portable charger, and a hoodie in case one of the boys got cold. Getting ready to go out when you have kids to take with you is always a chore, but we got there eventually. We hopped in the car and I started our route to the zoo. Thankfully, Smithsonian National Zoo was only about ten minutes away from our apartment in Georgetown, so it wasn't a lengthy trip. Admission was free, so we just found a parking spot and walked right in.

Michael saw the lion enclosure and almost bolted right to it before JJ put the fear of god in him, "Michael! Do not run away like that! You have to stay near me or Y/N, understand?"

He looked down at his feet, "Sorry, mommy..." He wrapped his ravioli-sized hand around my finger and stayed near us for the rest of the time. By the time we reached the hippo exhibit, which was only about 20 minutes into the excursion, he said his legs were tired and reached his arms out for me to pick him up. I happily accepted and carried him for the rest of our time at the zoo. Henry also seemed very attached to me today, and spent a large chunk of the day talking to me and asking me questions.

"Y/N, what's your favorite animal?"

"Hmm, ever or at the zoo?"

"Ever"

"Probably the black panther, I've always liked them."

"Woah! That's so cool... my mom's favorite animal is giraffes. That's lame."

JJ, who was right next to me holding my hand, turned her head to look at Henry, "Hey, I'm right here?!" Henry and I looked at each other and laughed. We stayed at the zoo until about 5:30 which isn't super late but both boys were exhausted by the time we pulled the car into our parking garage. JJ walked over to one side of the car and picked Michael up out of his car seat. I walked to the opposite side and draped a sleeping Henry onto my back, giving him a piggyback ride up to our apartment. JJ brought Michael into his room to nap until dinner time and I did the same with Henry since he was still groggy. As I laid him down in his bed, I heard him start to stir.

"Mmm, Y/N? Are we home?"

"Yeah, buddy, we're back. You can stay asleep though, we'll wake you up when it's time for dinner."

He was was still half asleep but he definitely knew I was the one in his room, so what he said next made me swoon, "Okay. Thanks, momma." I almost started crying but didn't want to do it in front of Henry.

I said, "You're welcome, buddy. Rest now," before walking back out into the hallway and going to find JJ. I heard her fumbling around in our bedroom. She stopped what she was doing when she saw me standing in the doorway starting to tear up.

"Y/N? What is it, baby? What's wrong?" She walked over to me and placed her hands on my hips, mirroring what I did to her this morning.

"Nothing I-I was just laying Henry in his bed and he-he called me 'momma'" A smile broke out on JJ's face as she started to tear up, too. "A-and he used my name a few seconds before, s-so he definitely knew it was me... isn't that amazing?"

We were worried about how Henry would adapt to the relationship between JJ and me so she agreed with me, "Yeah, yeah it really is... I-I don't even know what to say" We hugged each other for a minute or two to celebrate this milestone and then went to the kitchen to make dinner. I was in such a good mood for the rest of the evening, and was overjoyed knowing that Henry will accept me as his second mom when JJ and I get married. Not if, when.
