Harry had told you everything he found out. It was weird that the diary had no red ink on it so Harry decided to test it. He managed to figure out that the spirit of T.M.Riddle or Tom Marvolo Riddle communicated with him through the book and showed him a vision of the moment he captured Hagrid with the monster of Slytherin – a giant spider.
You all knew Hagrid wouldn't actually mean to hurt anyone, but he did have an unfortunate habit of loving big and dangerous monsters. Like last year, when he really thought he could raise a dragon in his small wooden hut.
It was confusing. On one hand you could totally see Hagrid thinking the monster was trapped and releasing it to 'help' it. But on the other hand, you knew Hagrid for years and Harry did just see it from some random spirit in some random book you found on the bathroom floor. Of course, you wanted to stand on Hagrid's side.
"Riddle might have got the wrong person," said Hermione. "Maybe it was some other monster that was attacking people..."
"How many monsters d'you think this place can hold?" Ron asked dully.
"I don't know, have you ever heard of a giant spider that can petrify people?" You questioned.
"We always knew Hagrid had been expelled" Harry admitted "And the attacks must've stopped after Hagrid was kicked out. Otherwise, Riddle wouldn't have got his award."
Ron shrugged "Riddle does sound like Percy - who asked him to squeal on Hagrid, anyway?"
"...Someone died." You reminded him in disbelief.
"And Riddle was going to go back to some Muggle orphanage if they closed Hogwarts," Harry added "I don't blame him for wanting to stay here..."
"You met Hagrid down Knockturn Alley, didn't you, Harry?"
"He was buying a Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent."
You all fell silent.
After a long pause, Hermione asked what you were all thinking "Do you think we should go and ask Hagrid about it all?"
"That'd be a cheerful visit," said Ron. "'Hello, Hagrid. Tell us, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?'"
Two months have passed since the last attack and a lot of people finally opened up to the possibility that maybe you and Harry weren't the heirs. Most thought the attacker gave up, perhaps it was just an extreme prankster? After all no one died.
Pomfrey told you the seal was getting weaker on your regular check ups and Hermione made sure to remind you to take the medicine every night. She was very interested in the seal, as was Ron. Harry didn't understand much about it, but he was supportive. Despite their colourful ideas, you still had no idea who sealed it in the first place though.
But soon you had other worries. After all the second years were all very busy.
