The next day the students walking past the house hourglasses had to double check to make sure they were seeing it right. Gryffindor has suddenly lost one-hundred and seventy points, overnight. At first no one knew why but the story has somehow leaked out, probably because of Draco.

The whole house seemed to have got it out on Harry. He was the most well-known and seemed to get most of the hate. The whole of Gryffindor was furious at him and even Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws seemed mad - they were also looking forward to see Slytherin lose and Gryffindor was their biggest contender.

Hermione and Neville also had it bad but they were less noticeable compared to Harry.

You got it the least bad, your name was recognized, but most people could relate to defending a friend a lot more than sneaking out at night. Hell, some who still thought you were evil due to being a Malfoy were even impressed. Plus twenty points for not ratting your friends out wasn't as big of a deal compared to fifty each for stupidly sneaking out at night. You were forgiven pretty quickly and people were back to talking to you within a week.

A week before the exam you were sitting in the common room. Harry has confirmed to you that Quirrell had broken down and most likely told Snape about his protection on the stone, now Snape only needed to know how to get past fluffy to succeed.

"Snape's done it, then!" said Ron "If Quirrell's told him how to break his Anti-Dark Force spell–"

"-There's still Fluffy though!" said Hermione.

"Maybe Snape's found out how to get past him without asking Hagrid," said Ron, he looked up at the books you had around you that all of you were studying "I bet there's a book somewhere in here telling you how to get past a giant three-headed dog. So what do we do, Harry?"

"Go to Dumbledore. That's what we should have done ages ago. If we try anything ourselves we'll be thrown out for sure." Hermione protested

"But we've got no proof!" said Harry "Quirrell's too scared to back us up. Snape's only got to say he doesn't know how the troll got in at Halloween and that he was nowhere near the third floor. Who do you think they'll believe, him or us? It's not exactly a secret we hate him, Dumbledore will think we made it up to get him sacked. Filch wouldn't help us if his life depended on it, he's too friendly with Snape, and the more students get thrown out, the better, he'll think."

"Right," You added "And we're not even supposed to know about Fluffy or the stone."

"If we just do a bit of poking around–" Tried Ron

Harry Flatly denied "No, we've done enough poking around."

You felt sad for Harry, you knew how much losing the points had affected him. He was almost scared of breaking any rules now. It was all very deflating.

The following morning Harry and Hermione got their detention letters. They would have them at 11 tonight. You read it over Harry's shoulder.

"I should have gotten a detention too, maybe I'll go anyway, if they don't let me I could take your cloak-"
