Chapter 8: The Man in the Shadows

Luna's P.O.V.

I woke up in the middle of night form a nightmare - more like a memory about my mom beating me up when I was little.

She had thrown a chair at me and it hit me in the back. I fell to the floor and she walked up to me and started to kick me on all sides. Then she pulled my hair and was drowning me in a bathtub full of water, cussing at me. After that, she pulled my head back up and slapped me across the face and threw me to the floor.

I was crying and had bruises all over me. She then put me outside in the backyard where I slowly cried myself to sleep in the cold, uncomfortable grass of the backyard.

Ever since my dad died, my mother had changed. He died in a very bad car crash and my mother broke down completely. She went from always being happy and kind to a monster who beats me, calls me mean names, and doesn't care about me. She always said that it was my fault and if I'm being honest, I truly think it is.

He died on my birthday and he was going out to buy me a birthday present. If I never asked him to get me one, he'd still be here and mom would still be normal. But now whenever I see her, all of the bad things she'd do to me came to mind.

I also hated my birthday because it always reminded me that my dad is gone.

I got up and started walking deep into the forest, kicking a few rocks in my path. I looked up and saw a man walking around the place. I hid behind a tree and tried to see the face of him, but he was nothing more than a black silhouette in the forest.

I started to walk closer to the man hiding behind a few trees as I walked closer. He didn't seem to notice me so I walked even closer without hiding behind any tree. Then he turned his head my way and ducked behind a few bushes.

My heart was racing, I was in a fucking dark forest with some random man. Then I noticed that even though I was super close to him, his face wasn't getting any clearer.

I poked my head up and there he was staring at me with his red eyes.

I didn't know what to do.

I tried to scream but my body wouldn't allow me too. He was still as dark as ever. He reached his hand out and moved backwards.

He only got up and walked over the bushes.

I needed to do something and fast. Then I got a rock that was beside me and threw it at the man. I got up and started to run as far as I could. I looked behind me a few times but he wasn't there. I didn't care, I just kept running for my life.

As I was running, the day where I ran away from my mom who was going to beat me, came into my mind. I saw her catch up to me and beat the living hell out of me. I shut my eyes and opened them again.

I turned my head around once more and I didn't see him then I turned my head back and bumped into someone with mighty force.

We both fell to the floor, with me on top and the person underneath. I got up to see who it was.

I sighed a sigh of relief. It was just Aspen.

"Thank god it's you." I said putting my hand over my heart.

"What happened? Why were you running?" Aspen asked.

Then I remembered about the man and I grabbed Aspen's hand and pulled her up.

"What are y-?" asked Aspen but before she could finish I started to run dragging her behind me.

"Luna! Slow down!" yelled Aspen. I ignored her and kept running. I continued to run until I made it back to where we landed with the wolf-thing.

"I think we're safe now." I said.

"What are you talking about? Safe from what?" asked Aspen.

"It's better if you don't know about it." I said, still a bit traumatized about what I saw.

"I think you should tell me." Aspen advised.

"No." I said. I wasn't about to let my best friend get traumatized or scared about what I saw. No matter what, I'll never tell her about what happened. Plus I have no idea if what I saw was real or not. I walked back to where we camped for the night and sat down.

Aspen sat beside me.

"What happened?" she asked again.

"I thought I saw a pack of wolves in the forest." I lied.

Aspen looked at me for a few seconds.

"Ok." she said, a bit dis-believable.

I knew that she could tell in my eyes that I was lying, but I didn't care. I wasn't going to tell her.

"Let's just go back to b-bed." I said.

Shit I stuttered a bit, I thought, angry at myself for stuttering. I never stutter and when I do it, it means two things: I was in trouble or I'm scared as hell.

Aspen had a very worried look on her face. I looked at her then at the ground.

"You don't need to fucking worry, I just remembered my dad that's all." I said. This time it wasn't a lie because I was thinking about him earlier. It just wasn't the full truth.

"I'm sorry. All you have to remember is that he's always with you no matter what." Aspen said in a soft tone. It was comforting I'll admit it but nothing could make me forget about that man. I shriveled a bit and then gave Aspen a weak but reassuring smile. Aspen gave me a small smile back.

The wolf started to move around a bit. Aspen and I both looked at it to see what the matter was and it's nose started to move up and down as if it was sniffing the air. 

I looked around the place and didn't see anyone or anything.

The wolf got up and started to growl up at the sky. I looked up and saw.................. the same man from inside of the forest.

He was flying in the sky, HE WAS FLYING IN THE SKY!

He held his hand out again and this time the wolf jumped in front of me and Aspen and started to growl even more. The black star on her right leg started to glow and then a bright light consumed us all. When I opened my eyes again to see a human girl with purple hair, WOLF EARS AND TAIL. She even had fuacking purple fading into yellow wings. One of the wolf ears were pierced with 2 golden short hoop earrings and the other had nothing.

The girl opened her eyes and they were the brightest golden color you could ever see.

I looked up seeing if the man was still there.......he wasn't. Then the girl came up to me and Aspen laid by our feet like an animal. Like a wolf!
