There's a knock on the door and it's not friendly at all and that means it's time to wake up. Well we're woken up that way. The room we sleep in has 5 single beds for each person. I hear zuki groaning and I laugh this one is not a morning person at all.
“ why is she always angry every morning. Ay cha who wakes people like that.”
‘‘ nawe zuki you should be used to it by now.’’ I say laughing and make my bed.
“ wake me up after 10 minutes ” she says and covers herself and I go to her and pull the covers
“ wake up and make your bed or else we're all going to be in trouble when mam Mavis comes.” I tell her.
“ fine. Fine.” she says. I take my things and go to the shower room and shower quickly. We're only allowed 10 minutes a person and if you're not finished the water will be switched off.
I'm done, wear my school uniform and comb my hair the best as I can cause sometimes it gets nappy out of the blue. I have to ask zuki to braid it using the wool coz were not allowed to have braids at school. Zuki gets in and starts to dress.
I look at her and laugh and she looks at me.
“ uhlekani ” she asks
“ you….I think I saw one grey pubic hair on you” she's shocked and drops the towel and looks at herself.
“ Ha jabu…unamanga! ” she says and I laugh way hard.
“ ngidlala ngawe…..you should have seen the look on your face ” I tell her and she throws the towel at me.
‘‘ you are not funny yaz ( you know) ’’ she laughs.
“ finish up or else we'll miss the breakfast” she quickly dresses up and we leave the room and go to the kitchen where we all eat. We find the other kids already there eating and we too seat down and eat. Our plates were already there waiting for us.
“ you have 5 minutes and the bus is already here waiting for you or else you'll walk to school ” mam Dlamini says.
We finish eating, go to the bus and it leaves as soon as we all get in.
“ I'm so excited…I’m going to see max at school today” zuki though.
“ oh please he likes all the girls” I tell her.
“ I know but I still like him ” she says giddily
“ Is that why you guys were kissing behind the boys toilets? ” I whisper in her ear and she's shocked and I laugh.
“ wait…how did you see us. I mean we made sure that no one sees us ”
“ I followed you when you suddenly had a stomach ache kanti ( but) you went to exchange spit with max ”
“ sis man jabu haw…did anyone else see us?” she's so embarrassed and it’s so funny.
“ nope.” it's true I only saw them. The bus takes us to different schools that we go to. Me and zuki are in the same school and class.
“ so tell me. How was it….your first kiss? ” I ask her.
“ I don't know…..it was good I guess. Phela yena he's 17 and has experience. So he said he'll teach me properly next time. ” wow.
“ what does that mean? ” I ask her
“ he wants me to bunk school and visit him next week.”
“ what zuki no!….you know they will report you to mam dlamini ” we are whispering now.
“ No one will notice that I'm gone. I'll just go to the office and ask for a sick note and say I’m going home.”
“ wow….and you came with that idea or he’s the one that suggested It?. ”
‘’ he did‘’ she says guilty
“ so are you going to do It?” I look away from her.
“ do what?.” she asks confused.
“ it zuki. Visiting a guy at his place can mean one thing only. ” she seems to think.
“ hmmm we are not going do it. I'm not ready yoh. ” she hates the idea but I don’t believe her.
“ then don't go to his house. He's not even your boyfriend zuki and wants you to visit him….think about it?” she nods. The bus drops us off and we attend the assembly go to our classes and learn. Lunch time comes and we go sit at our spot under the tree.
“ did you see him looking at me at the assembly?” I roll my eyes
“ No I didn't. Did you think about what I said?”
‘’I did but I trust max and so I'm going to go to his place.‘’ his ears must have told him we were talking about him cause he's coming to us with his friends and I don't like him he's a player.
“ladies‘’ he says smiling brightly and I'm bored.
“ hey max….unjani” gosh she really likes him.
“ I'm good now that I'm talking to my girl” I snort and shake my head.
“ what is it miss uptight? ” He asks me and I ignore him.
‘‘ you are too serious….you need a dick to loosen you up’’ he says grabbing his crotch.
“ leave her alone max. What do you want?.”
“ I came to give you my lunch and maybe get a kiss from you” he says to her and she giggles like she has just ate a burger that she loves.
“ I'm going to drink water. You know where to find me” I stand up and leave them.
“ bye miss uptight we won't miss you” him and his friends laugh. Stupid boys.
Lunch break gets over and we go to our class again. Time seems to be moving slowly and when the last bell rings I'm dead tired. Grade 11 is not a joke. We didn't talk on the bus cause we were so tired. We get home do homework, shower eat and I sleep the moment my head hits a pillow.
