CHAPTER 10 | Who Is Thato?

I couldn’t sleep after what thato said to me. He is turning out to be someone I don’t know and frankly he scares me. I wish I knew what’s really going on with him a d why he’s been acting g that way towards me but what if I’m afraid of what he will say. What if he says he did all of that just to get between my legs?.
He’s still sleeping. Snoring and the hi key on his neck is very visible. Did be think I will not see it? Or maybe he doesn’t care that I will see cause he didn’t hide it. Was I so desperate to leave that place so much that I couldn’t stop to think for a minute what will happen if we leave the orphanage?. God this is hard. Maybe going to thando’s parents house will be good for us. At least there it will be just the two of us in our room. I hope her uncle agrees.
He stirs next to me like he’s waking up. I close my eyes and pretend to be sleeping. He turns looks at me and sighs. He gets up and goes to the bathroom and takes time there. I turn and face the other way. The door opens again and closes. I hear shuffling like he’s taking his pants off then feel the bed dipping as he gets under the duvet again and his hand goes under my pyjama top and touches my skin with his hand. I hold my breath.
He moves his body closer and his hand goes down my stomach and tries to get between my thighs but can’t cause my legs are tightly shut. He begins to kiss my neck, puts his one leg on top of mine and pulls it to him. He turns my face and I open my eyes and look at him.

“ I need to go brush my teeth ” I say.

“ who are these girls living here Vusi? Thato?. Explain to me why the neighbour had to call us and tell us that thato is playing house with some girl here. Who the hell are they? ” his mother is mad. I look down.
“ aunty this is Portia, she’s my girlfriend and I live with her here.”vusi explains. I dare not to look at thato.
“ And these two? ” she asks.
“ they are my cousins aunty. They were recently kicked out of where they were renting and they have been renting a room here for too weeks ” portia explains. I wish she didn’t have to lie on our behalf.
“ Renting here? Is sex part of renting?. Is that why she’s having sex with thato?. ” we all keep quiet.
“ aunty… ”
“ shut up vusi. ”

“ I’m… I’m 17 ma'am.”
“ you’re 17? Wena?. You look like 21. You’re already having sex at this age and by the time you’re 35 you are going to be tired of having sex. Look at you sitting there smelling sex in the presence of adults! ” I look down ashamed.

“ This whole time you were lying to us  thato. You were here because you were having sex with this girl and vusi let you cause it is what you’re all doing. You lie, you come home late smelling alcohol and you’re having sex. What if she’s pregnant thato?
“ we always use condoms mom ” oh my God can thato just shut up!
“ I have told you to stay away from girls thato but you never listen. I chased them out of my house and now you have decided to bring them in your grandparents house cause you thought we wouldn’t find out what your up to right?. You now sleep with a girl for a whole night thato? At 18 years old?. You think you are a man now right?. Okay. Your dad and I have decided that we are sending you to Newcastle. You will not come back here again. You will be staying there until you leave for Cape Town to study.
I look at him. Thato has been accepted at the University of Cape Town and he didn’t tell me. Tears fill my eyes. He looks away. My heart breaks.
“ hey why are you crying?. You thought you could sink your claws on my son and trap him with a baby so he won’t go to study and stay here with you? ” I keep quiet.
“ Mom please! ”
“ pack your bags cause you are getting the hell out of here! ” oh my god No!
“ mom they have nowhere to go. You can’t kick them out! ”
“ That’s not my problem. Their cousin will help them find another place. ” she says. Thando threads our hands together. I wipe my tears.
“ Can they sleep one more night mom while looking for a place today then tomorrow they can leave then. Please mom.” She looks at her hus6 and he nods.
“ fine they can stay but tomorrow I want them out of here. Wena we have already packed your bags. Your uncles are outside waiting for you. ”
“ Mom no! I’m not leaving! ”
“ You are getting out of hand and you’re causing trouble we can’t afford to have. You are leaving. Now!. ” his days says and he keeps quiet.
“ Vusi I’ll be back tomorrow. You two better start looking for a place to stay.” His mither says.
“ can I at least say goodbye to her? ”
“ no! ” his mother says.
“ let him say goodbye to her.” He takes her hand and they walk out but she looks back at me and I know she’s not done with me. As soon as they close the door I get up and run to the bedroom, throw myself on the bed and burst into tears.
My heart has just shattered into small pieces. I feel like my life has just turned upside down again. I grab the pillow and cry my lungs out. He lies on top of me and kisses my head .
“ hey don’t cry. I’ll be only at Newcastle and it it’s not that far. I will come back and see you. My parents are just mad right now but they will soon get over it and I’ll be back. ” I shake my head no
“ you’re leaving me too…” that thought makes me cry harder.
“ I’m not leaving you baby I swear. I’ll be back before you even know it.”
“ you’re mother said… . ”
“ Baby she’s upset. She didn’t mean all that she said.. I’ll talk to her and make her understand that you are not what she thinks. Jabu I’m not leaving. I love you too much to do that.”
“ I’m scared thato… ”
“ I know you are. I will talk to vusi to find you a safe place to stay okay. I will sleep better knowing that you’re where I know is safe okay? ”
“ okay. ”
“ look at me please ”
“ I can’t  you’re on top of me ” he moves but then gets on top of me when I lay on my back.
“ I may be there but that doesn’t mean I won’t look out for you okay. I’ll always keep you safe and take care of you. Right now I need to leave and sort my issues out but I promise you I will be back okay? ”
“ okay ”
He pulls me to him and we hug tight.
“ Come and see me out.” We get off the bed and we leave the bedroom.
He talks to vusi and I can’t hear what he’s saying but vusi agrees to everything he’s telling him. He says goodbye to thando and Portia then takes my hand and I walk him out. We stand at the gate and his parents are in their car and the other has his uncles and they are looking at us. I try to remove my hand firm his but he holds it tight and looks at me.
“ I wish I didn’t have to leave you like this but I will be back baby. Just promise me one thing.”
“ What? ” he wipes my tears.
“ you will not entertain any boys and don’t let them touch you. Stay the fuck away from Phumlani. I mean it.” I nod.
“ Vusi will take you to the place where you’ll be staying. I’ll call you when I arrive in Newcastle. I love you sunshine. ”
“ I love you too. ” he wraps his arms around me and I hold him tight too. I don’t want to let him go cause I feel like I’m never going to see him again. “ Don’t forget about me please ”my voice breaks.
“ Never baby.”  whispers in my ear.“ if you cheat on me Jabu. I will kill you.” He kisses my cheek then leaves.
I stand there frozen as he repeats the same words he said last night. Obviously he meant them cause he’s saying them again. He gets in the car and looks at me. He mouths I love you then the car drives off. He too has left me. I wipe my tears.
“ it’s okay jabs I’m here. I’m never leaving you.” She hugs me..
“ I’m sorry thando for bringing all this on you. We got kicked out because of me”
“ No jabs. It wasn’t you. It was going to happen at some point. His parents were going to find out and we wouldn’t live here forever.” I nod.
We walk in the house. Portia and vusi stop talking and they look at us. Ohk what’s going on?.
“ I’m sorry jabu for all the things my aunt said. If she knew you and your situation I think she would have understood. ”
“ You don’t have to apologize vusi. She has every right to be upset. ”
“ I will take you to where you’re going to live after you’ve had breakfast. ” I nod..
“ I’m going to bath then I’ll begin to pack my clothes. ” he nods. Portia hugs me.
“ I’m sorry jabu ” thando goes to her room and I get in mine. I make the bed, pack my clothes and take some of thato's that are here. His socks, beanie and hoodies. I take a bath and have a good cry.  When I’m done I come out with my bag to the kitchen. Thando is already having breakfast. I try to eat but I just can’t.
“ He will come back  jabu. He just needs to get his head straight that’s all.” I nod.
“ I will miss having you guys here but I am going to come and visit you. ”
“ aren’t you going to see us too to our new place and by the way where are we going to live? ” thando asks him. Vusi and Portia look at each other.
“ it’s a friends house. She lives alone and she knows you’re coming.” Thando and I look at each other.
“ Is it safe there? ” I ask him.
“ it is. Thato wouldn’t take you there if it wasn’t safe.”
“ Okay. Thank you both for welcoming us with open arms. I will never forget you guys. ” Portia, thando and I hug each other.
We leave the house with their friend who likes thando. I feel like crying. This was the first place I felt like I can call it home. I am so sad that I won’t be living in here again. I guess we will see how things go at this place. I know for sure that if we smell something out of the ordinary we will leave.
He drives to town extension 23. The houses there look beautiful. How the hell does thato know someone that lives here?. Or maybe it’s a family friend that lives here. The gate opens outside this beautiful home and they drive in and park the car.
We step out of the car and they take our backs. We follow behind them as they walk to the front door and ring a bell then walk in without waiting for an answer.
“ Natasha? ” vusi calls out her name. We are in the sitting room.
“ In here. Come in. ” they walk and we follow the. The house looks absolutely beautiful. We pass closed doors then we see her chopping vegetables in the kitchen. She lifts her head up. Oh my god. Thando and I look at each other.
“ Oh hello. You’re finally here ” she says smiling looking at us. “ I’m Natasha. Thato's aunt.” She looks like her sister. Thato’s mother. Are they twins?. She smiles at me. “ no. We are not twins. We just look alike that’s all. ” oh I said that out loud. She wipes her hands and walks toward us.
“ Aunty, this is jabu and this is her friend thando.”
“ Nice to finally meet you jabu. Thato has told me so much about you and your friend.” She seems nice.
“ Nice to meet  you too miss aunty Natasha.” She smiles.
“ Well thank you boys. I’ll take it from here.” They nod.
“ I’ll see guys. We’ll come over to check on you from time to time u til thato is back.” He says looking at his aunt.
“ Thank you vusi.” They leave.
“ Let me show you where you be sleeping.” We take out backs and follow her. She shows thando her room and it’s a really beautiful room. Wow. Thando can’t wipe the smile off her face. We then go toine and she opens the door and we get in.
“ wow… ” thando and I say. “ this looks like an adults rroom”
“ it’s thato's room when he’s sleeping over and now it’s yours. ” she smiles.
“ It’s really beautiful.” She laughs.
“ well I will let you settle in. The draw as are empty so you can put your clothes in there. I’ll go finish preparing lunch and I’ll call you when it’s done okay? ”
“ Thank you aunty Natasha.” We both say.
“ Oh girls I’ve been living in this house alone and I’m just glad I won’t be alone again. We are going to have so much fun and I hope you’ll love it here. ”
“ we won’t disappoint you and we will follow your rules.” I tell her. She nods.
“ we are going to be on our best behaviour.” Thando adds.
“ I’m happy to hear that girls. I’ll see you later then.” She leaves us and closes the door. We sit on the queen bed and lay back facing up. We look at each other and giggle.
“ Thando? ”
“ Hmm ” she looks at me.
“ Promise me that if one if us senses or sees something funny we are out of here. ”
“ I was thinking the same thing. I promise.”
“ why hasn’t thato said anything about his aunt? ” I ask her.
“ Maybe he was going to tell you sometime. ” hmmm. “ he will be back jabs. ”
“ I hope so thando. ”
“ you know last night when he got in bed he said if I ever cheat in him he will kill me. ” thando gasps shocked.
“ what? Maybe he was drunk jabs.”
“ I thought the same thing too but he said it again before he left and told me to stay the fuck away from Phumlani.”
“ You think he meant it? ” I look at her.
“ I think he did. I hope we are safe here. ”
“ I hope so too jabs. I hope so too.” We sigh.
“ I wonder what vusi and Portia were arguing about before we came in. ”
“ it seemed pretty intense. Maybe they were having a couples fight.” Thando says..
“ Maybe.”
