KWAME.
The security let's us drive in the facility. They have been expecting us and we have to hurry now cause we are late. We have to move quietly and quickly. We park the car close to the doors so no one will see us moving in and out. The van has the same brands as the one from the hospital. We changed on the way and wore the uniform. We look like doctors but well we are ones so there's no lie in that. Msizi is in the camera's making sure we are not seen. Nothing will alert other guards unless something unexpected happens but I hate that.
The doors opens as the nurse lets us walk in. It's me, kudjoe and my brother. We all have our doctors coats and scrubs. As we walk through the corridors of the facility it is so silent. It shows that the patients are sleeping. We have to move quietly and quickly. In and out without causing any disturbance. Another guard is waiting for us. He slowly opens the butler's door and we walk through a long corridor. The more turns we take and deeper we go my stomach forms in knots cause the part where we are right now it looks like it's a jail. Like maybe where they lock up the seriously mentally challenged patients.
God I hope she's not locked in one of these rooms cause I swear I'll kill Bongeka myself. They open the last butler door and we walk in. The guards walk in and then opens the door. The other part makes my heart drop. It's worse than I thought. Fuck that bitch.
" She's in room number 3. I will walk in first then I will signal for you to come in." the nurse says. She's one of ours.
We nod and we walk to room number 3. She pulls the door open and walks in. We stand outside and keep guard.
" We have 15 minutes to leave before the guards rotate." Msizi says through the earpiece.
" Roger that." I tell him.
The guys nod too. The lights to the room get on and then we hear whispers. Someone cries softy and quietly. It must be Amara's mother. The door opens and the nurse nods her head. We walk in and my eyes instantly go to her. There's no doubt in my mind that this is the mother. You can see she has l the same features Amara has. My God she's really alive. She has her hand on the nurse holding on tight.
" Nozi. We have to leave now before the guards come and find us here."
She looks at us and she's afraid.
" How do I know that it is not my sister who sent them. She tried to kill me and when she failed she sent me here."
She I literally shaking with fear. I look the small room she lives in and it's the pits. It's small there's nothing personal that is hers. God. Bongeka is animal. She seriously doesn't deserve death. She deserves to be locked in a cage somewhere. I don't know how the hell she hasn't lost her mind cause I sure would have. I kneel in front of her and she moves back. I don't blame her but we are running out of time.
" Name is Kwame and we are here to rescue you. Your daughter sent me to come here and get you. This is my brother Majid. I don't know if you remember him but he was once your doctor. Dr Hudson-Odoi."
I tell her and she looks at me then my brother. She looks at him for a while then her face changes as she remembers him.
" I do remember you doctor. I remember you." She says.
" We have to leave and I promise I'll explain everything to you once you are safe and away from your sister."
She is still not convinced. I know she doesn't trust us but she has to.
" please Mrs Hadid. We have to leave. Your daughter is expecting me to come back with you."
" I tried asking for help this one time and she found out. The guards sold me and I was locked in there for a month. I can't go back there again. I can't. she lives with my children and plays mother to them. She will kill them if she finds me gone from here."
She is really scared and it's clear that Bongeka threatened to kill her children.
" She will not find you I promise you. I made a promise to Amara that I will come back with you and I have to keep that promise."
She shakes her head furiously and tears stream down her face.
" My Amara is dead. Her nanny stole her and killed her. She killed my baby."
" No Mrs Hadid. Amara is very much alive. She didn't die. Your sister and your friends played a part in her supposed death...."
" Don you need to leave now. The guards are starting to rotate." Msizi says shouting in my ear.
" No... no. My baby died. She did."
I take out my phone and quickly go through my gallery and show her a video of her studying in the lounge. I took it a while ago while she was busy studying not even seeing me watching her. She chokes up and cries. She takes the phone from me and runs her hand in her face. The same way Amara did last night when she saw her a picture of her family. Another one plays and that one is when I took of her sleeping. She's so beautiful.
" She's so beautiful." She says at the same time I'm saying to myself. " Is it really her?. She looks like her father but also like me. She really is my Amara isn't she?."
" I swear on my life. We need to leave Mrs. Hadid."
" Do you promise me that you'll keep us safe from her?."
" I promise you. I love your daughter and I'm doing for her. We have to leave now."
" Ok let's go. God please protect me."
" Is there anything you need to take with you?." I ask her.
" Just my bible."
She takes it. Wears her shoes and we leave. The guard is pacing up and down so when he sees us. He heaves a deep sigh. He walks to us and holding a key.
" You need to leave this way cause I already heard them talking Don. Be quick please." He says shoving the key at Kudjoe.
We run to where the door is. Kudjoe opens the door and we get inside. That part looks like it was abandoned. We run towards the other door and open it. The back smells like shit and there are boxes and stuff thrown in there. It's like a fucken dumping site. We close door and lock it then try move through all that shit. I take off my coat and pull it over Amara's mother. We maneuver through the shit until we see a building.
I look out and a security van passes by patrolling. They spend about five minutes then leave. We run out and go to another building. I move my head and look in my side and see the parking lot and our van.
" Mci. Get ready we are coming."
" Where are you?"
" Behind that abandoned building."
" Come now. The cost is clear."
I take Mrs. Hadid's hand and run to the car with her. For someone who is older she sure looks physically fit. I truly have to know this woman's story cause I have to know how the hell did she not lose her mind. The van doors open and we quickly get in. The van reverses and drives out of the facility. Amara's mother looks back and she breaks down and begins to pray and Thanks God for finally being out of that place. Her prayer, her tears really hit me cause it makes me think what if this was Amara. What if someone she loves and trusts did this to her. I still can't believe how the fuck did Kader not look into his wife's and daughter's death. How did he just let it go?.
The van drives for an hour then stops. We get out of the van and Mrs Hadid looks so worried my God. I wish there was a way I can make her feel better.
" Is this where you are going to kill me?."
She asks clutching her bible tight to her chest.
" No Mrs. Hadid. We have to get the van back to the hospital or they will report it missing."
She's not convinced. So I pull out my phone and face time Amara.
" I am calling Amara so you can be sure that it was really her who sent us." She nods. One of my guys takes the van back with the nurse.
The five of us get in the car and it drives off while the call connects.
AMARA.
I am in the living room and I'm watching TV but I can't hear what they are saying cause my mind is not here. I have this feeling at the pit of my stomach that something is wrong or something is going to wrong. I keep checking my phone but I haven't heard from him since he left and that was three hours ago. God I think I'm going to be sick.
" They will come back. Don't worry Ama"
Easy for her to say. Maybe she's used to her husband going to these kind if things but I'm not. Ever since he told me about his other life. I can't help but be worried that something will happen to him. God Kwame. Why did you tell me?. Look at what a mess I am right now. You better come home cause you promised me that you will always come to me.
" Amara?"
" What?" I look at Khensani.
" Your phone is ringing."
I look at it and its him. I can't believe he is still saved as somebody's son. I slide it then I see his face and I heave huge sigh.
" Don't cry love. I'm fine."
I wasn't aware that I was even crying. God what is wrong with me.
" Where are you?. Did you find her?. Are you okay?"
I ask him holding my breath. He smiles and my heart melts. I love this man. I wipe my tears off.
" I found her love. We did. She's here with us."
My tears just stream down like a dam has just burst open.
" Her she is."
He says and moves the phone away from him and I see her. Time seems to stand still as we look at each other. I move my hand to my phone like I'm tracing her face and she does the same. I cannot believe this is her. I will my tears so I can properly i look at her.
" Amara my baby. Is it really you?."
I nod cause I can't talk. I'm too choked up to even say a word. Her voice is beautiful. She speaks softly and quietly.
" it is me mama."
Her cries fill the phone and I let my phone fall cause the way she's crying makes me cry even harder. Khensani picks up my phone and talks to whoever that is on the phone and hangs up. She pulls me to her arms comforts me as I cry.
" It's okay Amara. Your mom is on her way here. They'll be here soon and you'll get to hold her. I am so happy for you right now."
She says clearing her throat fighting her tears. I nod in her chest and kiki brings us water. We take the bottles and drink. We have been sitting in the living room for what feels like it's forever. Uncle Rocco has been sitting in the corner in a chair watching me. I am thankful that he is here cause seeing him here brings me comfort. He gets up and goes to check the gate camera then we hear cars driving in.
We all get up from the couch and wait. I want to see my mother and I want to my Kwame. Doors open and close and I hold my breath. The door opens and people walk in. I wait to see who's going to come in view and the first person is Kudjoe. He looks dirty like he's been crawling out of something dirty. Majid walks in too and I walk towards them and stop as I see a woman walking in slowly.
Her hand goes to her chest and then mouth. We walk towards each other then stop the moment our feet touch each other. Her hands go to my face cubing me. Runs them all over my face like she's familiarizing herself with my features. Her hands go to my arms and down my hands. She turns her palms and looks at my hands. She lifts her right hand one and she smiles.
" Where's your birthmark?." She asks me through her tears.
I look at her face and whisper.
" it's on my pubic bone."
She pulls me into her arms and hold me tight. I slowly raise my arms up and wrap them around her. I know she is my mother. I felt it when I saw and her I felt it more when she touched me. We both hold each other and cry. I don't want to let go and she doesn't too. We hold each other until it dawns on me that I haven't seen Kwame. I pull away from her and she wipes my tears.
" You are so beautiful." She plants kisses all over my face. Those kisses from her go deep in my heart and I will never forget them as long as I live.
" Thank you. You are beautiful too. My eyes look like yours." She smiles. " Your smile too." She chuckles.
" Even her laugh too." Says uncle Rocco. She looks behind her as uncle Rocco emerges.
" This is uncle Rocco. Their uncle. This is Khensani , Majid wife and their assistant kiki."
" Nice to meet you all." She says. " I am Nozibusiso Hadi....Nozibusiso"
" I'm going to prepare a bath for you. kiki please cook us something quick and fast." Kiki nods.
The both go to different directions.
