CHAPTER 15 | Goodbye

THATO.

It’s been three days now and Jabu hasn’t woken up. Dr Letsoalo said it’s normal for a patient who has been through a traumatic event to be sleeping like this. Her brain activity and everything else is fine. He said her brain doesn’t want her to wake up cause it’s protecting her from the trauma she went through. I haven’t had any sleep for almost four days now and I’m tired. I won’t leave her side. I want her to know that I am here for her and I’m not going anywhere. I just want her to be okay that’s all.

We have been asking our neighbours and anyone who could have seen what happened but no one saw anything. We still have no idea who came and cleaned the house. My dad has also been asking but he still hasn’t heard nothing. Tonight I’m planning to do something. I hope what I’m planning to do will pay off. Someone has to pay for what they did to Jabu. It’s about damn time.

What I realized since this whole thing happened is that my aunt really loves Jabu like she’s her own. She hasn’t been her bubbly beautiful self. I’m worried about her. I haven’t seen my mother and Boni since I’ve been here. I’ve been avoiding their calls and I ended up switching my phone off. I know it’s only a matter of time before she comes here. I’m just surprised though why hasn’t my dad told her. I haven’t seen him around since that day I brought Jabu here.

I’m also worried about thando. She has been too quiet for my liking. I know she’s stressed about her sister and all but I feel like something else is going with her. I know Jabu would have wanted me to make sure that thando is okay. She’s as much affected as I am. I walk to where she’s sitting and she looks deep in thought.

“ thando? ” I sit down next to her. She looks up. She’s been crying. “ I know you’re also hurting and I’m sorry for not asking how you are. Jabu is strong and she’s going to heal. She has you, me and my aunt. Don’t worry ok.”

“ I just don’t understand what wrong did Jabu do to deserve this. Why would he do something like this? To her, to hurt her? Why is he so wicked? ”

“ he’s a fucken dead man when I find him thando. I promise you ”

“ Do you really mean it? ”

“ I do mean it thando. I know you don’t believe it and I don’t blame you cause my actions lately have been questionable but I love her. I really love Jabu more than anything. ”

“ Promise me you will kill him when you find out who it is! ”

“ Wait… thando? Do you know who raped Jabu? Or have an idea who it is? ” she looks away and shakes her head. “ is it bab' dlamini the one you think raped her? ”

“ I…. I…Don’t know who it is. But I need you to promise me you will make them pay.” She sounds serious. I can’t help but think that thando might know who raped Jabu.

“ I promise you. Even if it’s someone close to me they will pay.” She looks at me hard.

“ thank you. Can I ask one thing from you? ”

“ Ok ”

“ if Jabu doesn’t want to talk about what happened to her don’t force her thato please. Let her heal on her own until she feels like she wants to talk about it.”

“ I won’t ”

“ another thing is. I don’t want you to keep hurting her. So please thato. Stay away from her ”

“ you’re crazy. I’m not staying away from her. Forget it ”

“ how is she going to heal if she keeps seeing you every time? ”
