Chapter 18: Restless nights
Hermione kept on turning and turning, trying to fall back asleep, but nothing worked. She was getting frustrated, so she figured it would be better to get out of bed and make herself a cup of tea, perhaps that would help her fall back asleep. She quietly got out of bed and sneaked out of the room before making her way over to the kitchen. She grabbed a mug out of the cupboard and made herself some tea before making herself comfortable on the couch in the living room. She traced small circles on her swollen belly.
‘Are you sleeping?’ she whispered.
She felt the baby kick and chuckled. ‘I guess you’re awake.’
‘Hermione? What are you doing?’
Hermione looked up from her belly and saw Draco, with his messy hair, looking at her with a sleepy expression on his face.
‘I couldn’t sleep.’ she sighed.
‘You alright?’
‘I’m fine, just go back to bed love.’ Hermione told him softly.
Draco walked over to her and planted a kiss on her head.
‘I love you.’ he whispered.
‘I love you too.’
‘You coming with me?’
‘I’ll come back to bed after I’ve finished my tea, okay?’
Draco nodded, kissing her forehead before he turned around and made his way back to the bedroom. Hermione sighed as she shook her head. Her belly was so big that she couldn’t lay comfortable anymore, which caused the sleepless nights. She knew this would happen in the last one or two months of the pregnancy, but she didn’t expect it to feel like this. She was already exhausted all the time and the fact that she couldn’t sleep hadn’t helped at all on that matter. She finished her tea before returning back to bed, where she carefully laid down next to Draco, trying not to wake him, but it was too late.
‘You feeling okay?’ he mumbled.
‘Yes.’ Hermione whispered, turning to face him and gently pressing her lips against his. ‘Just go back to sleep.’
Draco slowly nodded and as she listened to his breathing she could hear the rhythm slow down, telling her he had fallen back asleep. She looked at him in the dark and couldn’t help but smile to herself. She married this guy. He had been waiting for her, for two years, to come back and now she’s lucky enough to be lying next to him, carrying his child.‘How have you been feeling?’ Ginny asked.
Hermione shrugged. ‘Not great.’
Ginny nodded understanding.
‘Those last two months were killing for me.’ Ginny told her.
Hermione nodded.
‘You know that if there’s anything I can do for you, you just have to ask.’ Ginny said.
‘I know, thanks Gin.’ Hermione smiled.
‘How’s Draco reacting to all of this?’ Ginny asked, gesturing to Hermione’s big baby belly.
‘He’s doing great actually. Slightly overprotective though.’ Hermione chuckled.
Ginny smiled. ‘He’s a good guy.’
‘He really is.’ Hermione smiled.
‘Do you think you would’ve came back if it weren’t for my wedding invitation?’ Ginny asked.
Hermione looked up at her best friend, placing her fork down on her almost empty plate.
‘Honestly? I don’t know.’ Hermione shrugged. ‘But now that I know about the whole “true love bond” thing I can’t help but think that something else would’ve pulled me back to the UK.’ Hermione said.
‘I’m glad you came back when I asked you to.’ Ginny said. ‘I’m not sure if the wedding would’ve been complete without you.’
Hermione smiled. ‘I’m glad I came back as well.’
‘You’re going to name the baby Ginny, aren’t you? I mean it’s because of me that you and Draco walked into each other, twice.’
Hermione laughed. ‘Twice?’
‘Yes, the first time was at the party and the second time was when I had set you both up to get “my dress”.’ she winked.
Hermione shook her head. ‘I’ve got to disappoint you though. Ginny was on the third place of our name list for girls.’
‘Oh Ginny can be a great boy’s name.’
Hermione rolled her eyes, but couldn’t help but crack a smile.
‘So you already have names?’
‘We do.’ Hermione nodded.
‘And you’re not going to tell me, are you?’
‘Correct.’
‘Darn it.’
Hermione smiled. ‘Gin, I want to ask you something.’
‘And that is?’ Ginny asked, taking a sip of her water.
‘Would you want to be our baby’s Godmother?’
Ginny spit out the water she had been drinking with widened eyes. ‘Sorry.’ she said, quickly cleaning the water from the table.
‘Yes! Yes of course I want to be your baby’s Godmother!’ Ginny squealed.
Hermione chuckled. ‘That’s great!’
‘Who’s going to be the Godfather?’
‘Harry of course.’ Hermione smiled.
‘Does he know?’
‘No, we still have to ask him.’
‘I’ll keep my mouth shut.’ Ginny promised.
‘That’s good to know.’ Hermione laughed.
‘Oh my goodness.’ Ginny breathed.
‘Isn’t it weird how things have ended up?’ Ginny asked.
‘What do you mean?’
‘I mean, Harry and I are married and have a kid, You’re pregnant from Draco Malfoy, Ron’s married to Lavender. Fred’s alive and is in a relationship with Hayley, a nurse who took care of you in the hospital. Neville and Luna are married and have twins! I mean if you think of it, it’s all sorted out in a strange way.’
Hermione chuckled. ‘If you would’ve told me that I would be pregnant from Draco Malfoy and married to him when we were in our first to sixth year, I wouldn’t have believed you.’
Ginny shook her head.
‘I’m glad he changed for the better in our last year.’ Ginny said. ‘He’s done you good.’
‘He thinks I only changed him, but he changed me as well.’ Hermione smiled.
‘Not only in size.’ Ginny joked.
‘Gin!’ Hermione laughed, throwing her napkin at Ginny’s head.
‘What! It’s true!’
Hermione smiled, looking down at her belly.
‘You should see him.’ Hermione smiled. ‘He’s so excited for the baby to come. Every time he passes the baby room he has to take a peek inside.’ Hermione chuckled.
‘That’s cute.’
Hermione nodded.
‘Have you heard from Krum at all after you left him for Draco?’ Ginny asked.
Hermione looked up at Ginny. ‘I have, yes. He contacted me a few times. Why do you ask now, after years have gone by?’ Hermione chuckled.
‘Oh I was just wondering. What did he say?’
‘That he wants me to be happy.’
‘Are you happy?’ Ginny asked.
Hermione smiled at her before nodding. ‘I am.’
‘Good, because otherwise I would have to kick Draco’s arse.’
Hermione laughed.
‘Are you going to go back to work after the baby’s born?’
‘I want to. I love my job.’
Ginny nodded.
‘It’s good to be able to help people.’ Hermione smiled.
‘I can imagine that.’
‘How’s work for you?’
‘Oh great. You do have to keep that baby inside of you until I return back home though.’ Ginny told her.
‘Yes ma’am.’
‘I’m serious Malfoy.’ Ginny said sternly.
‘I want to be there when it pops out.’
‘Eew.’
Ginny laughed.
‘In the waiting room, obviously.’
‘Are you excited for the upcoming game?’
‘I actually am.’ Ginny smiled. ‘I think we’ve got a big shot at winning.’
‘I’m sure you’ll win. I hate that I can’t be there to support you.’
‘You’ve got to take care of yourself and your little one. You can come and watch our next game. I’ll arrange a V.I.P box for you.’
‘That would be marvellous.’
‘Can you combine being a mum and being the captain of the Quidditch team in good proportions?’
‘I think I can. But I’m not going to be doing this for much longer though. I’ve been offered a job as commentator.’ Ginny said.
‘You have?’
‘Yes.’ Ginny smiled.
‘Are you going to take the job?’
‘I actually am. Being a commentator on games means more time with my son.’
Hermione nodded.
‘I miss hanging out with you like this.’ Hermione said.
‘I do too. We have to do this more often.’ Ginny said.
‘We really do.’ Hermione smiled.‘Hey, you’re home early.’ Hermione said, looking up from her book as she heard Draco close the door of the apartment.
‘Yeah, the last case was a quick one.’
‘Have you asked Harry yet?’
‘I did.’ Draco smiled as he kissed her on her lips.
‘What did he say?’
‘That he was honoured. Have you asked Gin?’
Hermione nodded.
‘Let me guess, she said yes?’ Draco chuckled.
‘She did.’ Hermione smiled.
‘That’s settled. How has your day been?’ Draco asked, sitting down on the couch, lifting Hermione’s legs up and placing them on his lap.
‘It was good. I went to get lunch with Gin, she helped me with grocery shopping, picked James up from Molly’s, before we chatted some more after we arrived back here.‘
‘A productive day I see.’
Hermione smiled. ‘It was nice to have my best friend by my side for a whole day.’
‘She’s busy, isn’t she?’
‘The game will be in a few days. She just has to train a lot.’
Draco nodded. ‘Understandable. But how is she going to keep doing this?’
‘She’s actually going to take an offer she had received to become a commentator.’
‘Really? That’s great!’
Hermione smiled and nodded. ‘She seemed excited about it.’
‘It does mean more spare time.’
‘I think that’s the reason she’s going to take the offer.’
Draco nodded.
‘And how has the baby been today?’ Draco asked, placing his hand on her belly.
‘The baby’s been good.’ Hermione smiled, looking at the love of her life as a smile appeared on his face, feeling their baby move underneath the layer of skin. And in that moment she knew for sure. She would never run away from him again. He was the one, he had always been the one and he always will be the one to be her hero, to be the keeper of her heart.A/N:
