Chapter 19:  Prepare yourselves

Hermione was lying in bed when she woke up from a hard kick. She sighed and turned around with her huge belly and looked at Draco. He looked so peaceful. She placed her hand under her pillow and rested her other hand on her belly. She slowly closed her eyes and after half an hour she finally fell asleep again only to be woken up minutes later by an horrible pain in her stomach. She sighed and slowly sat up straight. Maybe some tea would calm it down. She pushed herself out of bed, which was pretty hard for her at this point in her pregnancy and walked out of the bedroom, placing her hand against her back, which was hurting too. She walked into the kitchen and made herself some tea. She sat down behind the kitchen table and placed her cup on the table, wrapping her hands around it to warm them up. She took in the smell of her tea and sighed, rubbing small circles over her belly. She slowly drank her tea and when she had finished it she decided to try to get some more sleep. Hermione got up and placed the cup in the dishwasher before she wanted to leave the kitchen, but then she felt an awful pain. She got hold of the kitchen counter as she was bowed forwards. She wrapped her arm around herself, trying to get rid of the pain. The pain was too much and she couldn’t even breath for a few moments. Luckily the pain stopped and she stood back up straight again, heavily panting and looked down at her belly.
‘Ouch.’ she said.
She stared down at her huge bump and then it hit her.
‘Contractions.’ she whispered.
Another started and she fast got hold of the kitchen counter again.
‘Dammit!’ she breathed.
‘Draco.’ she panted.
‘Draco.’
‘DRACO!’
She heard rumbling and then Draco was wrapping his arm around her.
‘What’s wrong?’ he asked concerned.
‘Contraction.’ she managed to get out.
‘Oh dear God.’ Draco said.
‘Did your water break?’ Draco asked.
Hermione shook her head as the pain faded.
‘What do you want me to do?’ Draco asked and Hermione could hear he was starting to panic.
‘Draco.’ Hermione said calmly, standing up straight again.
Draco looked around, trying to figure out what to do.
‘Draco, look at me.’ Hermione said calmly as she cupped his face with her hands.
Draco focused his eyes upon hers.
‘Breath.’ she said.
Draco nodded.
‘The only thing I want you to do, right at this moment, is stay calm and don’t panic.’ Hermione said.
‘Because if you panic, I’ll start to panic and that’s the last thing I want right now.’ Hermione said.
‘I’m sorry.’ Draco said.
‘It’s okay.’ Hermione said as she placed a kiss on his lips.
‘Everything will be al-‘ she started but was interrupted by another contraction.
Draco wrapped his arm around her so she could lean on him and offered his hand so she could hold that for support.
‘Alright?’ Draco finished.
Hermione nodded, giving him a weak smile when the contraction stopped. She breathed in and out before she stood up straight again.
‘That was a quick one, wasn’t it?’ Draco asked.
Hermione nodded.
‘It has to be every 5 minutes for an hour long before we can go to the hospital.’ Hermione said.
‘How do you know?’ Draco asked.
‘They told us with the last check up, I asked remember?’ Hermione said.
‘Uh…. sure.’ Draco said.
‘Do you ever pay attention?’ Hermione asked.
‘Yes I do!’ Draco said.
‘Okay, okay, let’s get your stuff ready for the hospital.’ Draco said.
‘Already packed everything.’ Hermione said.
Draco raised his eyebrows.
‘When?’
‘When you were at work.’ Hermione said.
‘Of course you did.’ Draco said.
‘Someone had to do it! Otherwise it would’ve been done last minute!’ Hermione said.
‘And that’s something that would not have worked.’ Hermione added.
An hour later Hermione had been having contraction every 5 minutes and they started to get worse and worse. Hermione was glad when they finally were able to go to the hospital. They fast got inside and Draco checked her in. A wheelchair was brought for Hermione and she gladly sat down in it, letting Draco push it up to the labour and delivery unit. Hermione got out of the wheelchair with help from Draco when they arrived in the room and he helped her up onto the bed. A nurse walked in and shook both of their hands.
‘Hi Miss and Mister Malfoy.’ the nurse said.
‘Oh please just say Hermione.’ Hermione said.
The nurse smiled and nodded.
‘I’m Madeline, I’m going to be your nurse throughout your time in this hospital. If you need anything just press that button over there and I’ll come in. I’m first going to ask you to empty your bladder and if you want to you can change into a hospital gown, if not you can pull your desired clothing on.’ she smiled.
Hermione did as she was asked and when she was all done she laid back down on the hospital bed.
‘You know your pyjama’s will get dirty?’ Madeline asked.
‘Yeah, but that’s no problem.’ Hermione smiled.
‘I’m just going to ask you a few questions, okay?’ Madeline asked.
But just at that moment another contraction started. Hermione got hold of the bed and made a fist with her free hand. Draco rubbed small circles on her back and they waited until the contraction was done.
‘Okay.’ Hermione breathed.
‘When did the labour start?’ Madeline asked.
Hermione looked up at Draco.
‘Uh, I think it was around half past 2 in the morning, that’s when I started noticing the contractions.’ Hermione said.
‘Did your water break?’
‘Not yet.’
‘Has there been any blood?’
‘No.’
‘How’s your baby moving?’
‘The baby is quite still, but I’ve felt her or him a few times.’ Hermione said.
The nurse smiled and nodded as she noted everything down.
‘I’m going to call your provider, I’ll be right back.’  Madeline said.
‘Okay.’ Hermione said and Madeline walked away.
Hermione’s provider came into her room after five minutes while Hermione had just been done having another contraction.
‘Hermione, how are you?’ the provider asked.
‘I’m fine, thank you Dr. Brown.’ Hermione smiled.
‘Good, I’m going to examine you now, but don’t worry it won’t hurt.’ Dr Brown smiled.
Dr Brown told them she was 5 cm dilated and then asked her about her physical symptoms, when the contraction were regular and strong and what was the rate of her pain on a scale of 1 to 10. Hermione told her a 7 and Dr Brown gave her a small smile and a nod. From that moment they started to regularly check up on Hermione and the baby. Checking the heart rate of the baby they asked if Hermione wanted an epidural which she gladly said yes to.
Draco looked up at her while she was looking at the monitor that showed when she was having a contraction.
‘How are you feeling?’
Hermione turned to look at him and gave him a small smile before taking a hold of his hand which had been lying next to her on the bed.
‘I’m feeling fine.’ Hermione smiled.
‘I’ve called your parents and I send my patronus to my mom and Harry and Ginny’s home asking them to inform the others.’ Draco said.
Hermione nodded.
‘Good.’ she said.
‘They won’t be allowed to get in here.’ Draco said.
‘That’s okay, the fact that I’ll see them after is comforting enough.’ Hermione smiled.
Draco smiled and nodded.
‘All the hospital talk is quite confusing.’ Draco said.
Hermione chuckled.
‘It is.’ she said.
