Chapter 46: A new year, a new captain

The clouds blocked the sun and a cold breeze blew over the grass of the field. Narcissa walked up to the group of students that had gathered on the Quidditch field, a clipboard in her hand with notes and names on it. When she had woken up that morning she had felt nervous and that annoying feeling stayed up until a few minutes ago. But now, the nerves were gone and the only thing left was excitement to see what this year's team would be like. 'Alright everyone.' Narcissa spoke up, silencing the group of students who wanted to be a part of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. 'Welcome to the try outs. Now first of all thank you all for coming, second of all try to calm those nerves. We're going to put you in the position you want to originally be in, play a game and I'll see with my second in command whether we'll place you in the team or to ask you to try again next year. Now remember, you might have a position in mind, but this does not guarantee you'll have this position in the team in case you'll be chosen as a member. We might have other ideas for you when we've seen you play.'
A few of the students nodded, others kept quiet and just looked at her, awaiting more explanation. 'Okay, I've received the list with everyone's names and the position they'd want to play in. There is one match with two teams. Team blue and team grey. When I call your name and the team you're assigned to, walk to your team's colour.' Narcissa told them. 'Now don't think your chances of getting into the team are blown when your team has lost, we will assess everyone individually. Show your spirit, do your best and most importantly of all: remember to have fun.'
Narcissa read the names and teams out to the students before telling them to pull the jerseys on and get themselves ready. Narcissa walked over to Isobelle who stood to the side, looking at everything that was happening on the field in front of her. 'Speaking of your second in command, where the hell is Christopher?' Isobelle asked when Narcissa stopped next to her.
'I have no idea. I've tried to find him, but it seems he has fallen off the face of the earth. I send someone to fetch him, but that was about ten minutes ago.' Narcissa told her best friend. 'I don't understand, he knows how important the try outs are. Without good players, we won't have a good team.'
'Try to stay calm. I'm sure he'll show up.' Isobelle tried to reassure her. 'You'll do great. Your little talk just now sounded so professional, as if you've been captain for years!'
'You really think so?'
'Yes! You did amazing! Absolutely amazing!'
'Thanks.' Narcissa smiled.
'Do you want me to go look for him as well?'
'Yes please.'
'Okay, believe me, it'll all be fine.' Isobelle smiled, squeezing Narcissa's arm.
Narcissa took a deep breath and nodded. 'Alright then, here we go.'
Isobelle turned around and made her way back to the castle and Narcissa stepped towards the students, who stood ready to play a game of Quidditch. 'Everyone ready?' Narcissa asked.
'Yes!' the students called enthusiastically.
'Let's play a game!' Narcissa cheered.

The game had been going on for about twenty minutes and Narcissa had scribbled a few notes down for a few students she had been assessing. A few were good players and she knew just where to position them in the team, others not so much. A few played rubbish, but she had hope they might improve or perhaps train for next year's try outs. She hated to shatter someone's hope, but it was something she wouldn't be able to avoid, she could hardly give everyone a position. Narcissa saw something move in the corner of her eye and heard raised voices, away from the field, but didn't give it any attention, keeping her eyes on the game that was being played in front of her. 'Captain!' one of the students called to her. 'Look!'
Narcissa turned to look and saw Christopher throwing a punch right against James's jaw. Narcissa ran to the two boys and tried to pull them apart, but they were too busy trying to knock the other's brain out to even notice her. 'Stop it.' Narcissa yelled, trying to jump between the guys again, but this time one of them gave her a hard push and she fell back on the ground, her head smashing against the grass. Both guys stopped and turned to her. 'Cissa.' James said.
'Are you okay?' Christopher asked concerned, holding his hand out for her to take. Narcissa looked up at them and muttered something under her breath as she pushed herself up from the ground and wiped the dirt off her Quidditch clothes.
'What the hell is the meaning of this?' she asked, anger clear in her voice.
'He said something-' Christopher started while at the exact same time James started explaining himself. 'He literally just punched me in the face-'
'Stop!' Narcissa yelled, both guys falling silent. 'There is no good valid reason for either of you to start trying to knock the other out. Now apologize or I'll go to McGonagall and report the both of you. This is outrageous! Behave yourself for Merlin's sake.'
Christopher and James stared at her in silence.
'NOW!'
They turned to one another and muttered an apology.
'I can't hear you.' Narcissa protested.
'Sorry.' they said loud enough for her to hear them.
'Good, now get yourselves cleaned up and get far away from my try outs.' Narcissa instructed them, before turning around and walking back to the group of students that had gathered on the ground to see what was happening. 'Bloody idiots.' Narcissa muttered.
