Desiree's POV

"Yup, that's right; we're back," Derek sneered, and the Populars behind him chuckled.

Lillia and Haley exchanged frightened glances, then looked at me with worry. Lachlan glared at the Derek and the Populars, and if looks could kill, all of them would've dropped dead. He stepped in front of me and grabbed my hand from behind, pushing me back farther from the Populars.

"Stay away from her, mate," Lachlan said angrily. Derek gave a slight shocked expression, then laughed without humor, and the Populars joined in.

"Aw, Desiree has a boyfriend, does she?" Derek said in a mocking voice. My cheeks turned pink and I stepped aside with Lachlan's hand still laced with mine, looking Derek straight in the eye.

"I have them to worry about twenty-four seven, Derek. I don't need you in my life." He chuckled.

"Those things aren't important, Desiree. What is important is that they are ne-" I rolled my eyes.

"I already know that, Derek. Things have never changed. But what I don't understand is why you're just... here. You're just one of the problems that I don't want to deal with." He gave me a smile that hinted malevolence.

"You'll see soon Desiree. Things will change later on."

"Can't you just shove off, Derek?" Haley spat and Lillia nodded. Derek's head snapped in their direction, and his eyes flickered from the two girls.

"Ah, Haley, Lillia! I was wondering where you two went. Come here." Derek smiled and opened his arms. They scoffed.

"We aren't following you anymore, Derek. We're done with your rule," Lillia said in a bored voice. He raised his eyebrows.

"That's a mistake, ladies. You'll find out the hard way." He looked at Lachlan.

"And by the way, Aussie... I think you should take the moment to walk away from this freak. By the time you'll want to leave, it'll be too late." A wave of hurt hit me hard, though I tried hard to not let it show. The most let pass was tears, but I was able to blink them back fast. I saw Lachlan's eyes narrowed.

"Well, that's not going to happen. I'll never leave her," Lachlan insisted, and I felt his hand grip mine tighter. Derek let out a soft laugh.

"She'll probably be dead before you can even date her," he scoffed. I felt Lachlan's hand release it's grip on mine. His fist came in contact with Derek's face. Derek stumbled back, cupping a hand around his jaw.

"Ugh... you already know that's true about that Outsider," Derek growled and his fist hit Lachlan's cheek awfully hard.

"No!" I screamed and tried to sprint to Lachlan, but Haley and Lillia held me back.

Lachlan staggered back from the impact then he ran up to Derek.

"Don't say that about her!" Lachlan screamed and his fist flew across Derek's face again, but with more power. The Populars immediately stepped forward, trying to cover Derek.

Lillia and Haley restrained Lachlan from reaching Derek, who was scrambling away from Lachlan with fear written all over his face. I stepped in front of Lachlan, moving in his way every time he tried to peek over my shoulder.

"Desiree, move!" he shouted, and I flinched from the loudness in his voice.

I finally took his face in my hands, and he stopped moving, gazing straight into my eyes with a fuming expression. I could feel that his jaw was clenched hard. I gently rubbed off a little bit of blood from his face with my thumb. As much as I hated Derek, I couldn't bear to see Lachlan like this. It reminded me of many things that I didn't want to recall.
