Desiree's POV
The next day, I was in a happy mood, prancing around my house as I got ready. Very unusual in my books. Why was I in a good mood? Maybe because I actually made a friend that seems nice and promising.
In an hour, I was biking down the street to school. I was humming "Joyful, Joyful", one of my favorite religious songs to sing as I pushed open the school's front doors. I headed to class freely walking without worrying that I will be sabotaged by Populars.
I couldn't wait for lunch.

I sat down on the usual short concrete wall that is shaded under a tree. I took out the sandwich that I neatly made at home and my pre-dried novel. I opened to the last page I remember stopping at and began reading.
"'Elise waited patiently at the foot of the steps. Soon the sky was dark and the crickets awoke. 'Elise! You mustn't stay out! Come inside!' Elise refused, for she wanted to believe that Charles would come.
"'Alas he never arrived. Elise rushed back inside and into her mother's arms. Elise weeped, for her Prince Charming betrayed his vow to save her and her crippled mother.'"
I took another bite of the sandwich and a bit of water.
Poor Elise. I've read this book countless times, but I always feel the same way every time.
Just then, someone sat down near me. Ugh, it's Jordan.
"Oh my God, can you please leave me alone, for once? You're so annoying!"
"W-what?"
I looked up at the person sitting next to me. It was Lachlan.
My eyes widened. "Oh God, sorry! I thought you were someone else!" My face reddened and I put my face in my hands. Lachlan laughed.
"Who did you think I was?"
"I-I thought you were Jordan Pierce!"
Lachlan gradually stopped laughing. "Why him?"
"Jordan loves to hit on me," I explained while putting my novel away. "It's so annoying. I hate him so much."
As if on cue, Jordan came up to me and raised his eyebrows. "This is Lachlan, my friend. Now can you please leave?" I asked in my most sweetly annoyed voice possible. Surprisingly, he left muttering something too low to hear.
"Wow, he usually never listens to me," I said in an awed voice, watching him walk away.
"Are you two...?" Lachlan asked in a worried way. I shook my head fast.
"Oh, heck no, he just likes hitting on me." Lachlan looked relieved.
"Why...?" I asked slowly and suspiciously.
"Oh, just wondering," he said in a rushed manner. If this guy is trying to cover something up, he is the worst at it. I really wanted to know why he was like this, but I just tried to smooth out the awkwardness and carry on.
"M'kay... so how old are you?" I asked and took a bite of my sandwich.
"Eighteen, but that's because I was put in school kind of late."
"I'm in the same situation, too. I'm eighteen as well," I said surprised.
"Do you have a boyfriend, Dez?" He switched back to the topic that I want avoid.
"Um... are you referring to Preston? Because if you are, no, and all I know is that he was nice enough to defend me," I said, beginning get annoyed. If there was a monitor measuring the awkwardness level right now, it would burst.
He looked down and muttered something.
"What?"
"Oh, it's just that I know Preston, and he has a girlfriend, Sara."
My heart sunk a little.
He has a girlfriend, Desiree. Be happy for him.
You still have Lachlan, a friend. That's good enough.
But something seems real off with Lachlan. Something really sketchy. Does he... like me?
Lachlan's POV
I'm glad I told her about Sara. I don't want Preston blowing my one bloody chance to win... her heart, her heart, I mean. Right?
If Sara and Preston break up, it's officially over.
Anyone could see that they like each other.
I have to find a way to make her fall for me, and fast.
But how?
Desiree's POV
We put that especially awkward moment aside and carried on.
For the past week we chatted about ourselves to get to know each other until the bell rang, then met at the Elder Oak Hill and chatted some more. I laughed and smiled so much that my face started to hurt. I forgot what it was like to be happy. And since someone was always around to defend me, the Populars had stopped bullying me.
Now my life feels normal. Like as if there actually was an angel listening that day, and God granted my wish.
Life is weird. The smallest thing can change your entire life.

Lachlan's POV
Since Desiree and I were spending so much time together, we became close friends.
"AY! Lachlan the Kangaroo! Get back here with my water bottle!" she yelled, chasing me across the meadow.
"Pls! I'm very tirsty! Leave me alone!" I yelled back in a silly voice, trying to out-run her.
"Okay, Lachlan I didn't want it to end this way, but you made me!"
I heard fast rustles of grass behind me, then I was tackled to the ground.
"OHHH! R.K.O. OUT OF NOWHERE!" Desiree screamed and I laughed. She yanked the water bottle out of my grasp, still laying on me.
"Oi! Get off me back, Dez! I can't breathe!" I said, trying to get up. I used my hands to lift myself off of the ground, and she rolled off my back and onto the meadow.
"Mmm... H2O is so refreshing," Desiree sighed, draining the bottle fast.
"May I have some?" I asked politely. She handed me the bottle.
I looked in the distance where Desiree's house was.
Wait a second. Is that... red and orange?
No, it couldn't be. Who would do such a thing?
Populars?
"Dez, i-is that your house?" I asked in a very worried way and pointed.
She looked at it, then screamed, "NO!"
She scrambled to get up and sprinted toward the red and orange shape.
"Desiree! Wait up!" I screamed as I struggled to keep up with her speed. But that only caused her to run faster.
We ran up the hill to get to the horrifying scene.
"No..." I heard Desiree whisper as I reached her side.
It was indeed her house engulfed in flames.
