Desiree's POV
I pulled my hair back with a brush and tied it into a high ponytail. I tucked a stray hair behind my ear and leaned against the sink counter. My eyes trailed up the mirror until I was staring into my own lifeless eyes and pale face. I sighed and turned around to leave the bathroom.
I've been counting every second of the days when Lachlan is still laying motionless in the hospital.
6 months, 3 weeks, 5 days, 7 hours, 23 minutes, and 19 seconds.
You don't realize how much you love someone until they're gone from your touch.
I threw on a sweater and swung my purse over my shoulder. I slipped on my boots and opened the door.
Cold wind pinched my cheeks and the snow chilled my skin. My breath came out in small misty clouds.
I ironically headed down to the ice cream parlor to meet Mitch there. Why ice cream on a winter's day like this?
One word: Canadian.
I pushed open the ice cream parlor's door to be greeted with a small chime.
The boy behind the counter flashed me a smile and I returned a small one back. I sat down in one of the tables for two and looked out the blurry window.
After a few minutes, someone covered my eyes with their hands from behind.
"Guess who it is," the way too distinctive voice said, and I could tell they were smiling.
"Mitch...?" I said slowly.
"Oh my God, how did you know?" Mitch gasped in a sarcastic-shocked voice.
I laughed and pried his hands off of my eyes. He sat down in the chair across from me.
"So, how are you doing?" Mitch started gently, and my happy self immediately disappeared.
"Horrible," I said miserably. "I can't live properly. I miss him so much."
He flinched, as if my words were hitting him.
He took a breath and said, "I-I know, I miss him, too."
"Do you think he'll be okay? I mean he..." my voice trailed off.
"Having faith is the only thing you can do. Believe that he'll survive."
An uncomfortable silence filled the room.
"Um, would you guys like ice cream? The ice cream is half off today," the boy behind the counter piped up.
Mitch looked at me and I nodded.
"I'll have chocolate chip cookie dough in a waffle cone, please," I requested quietly, and Mitch asked to have the same.
We turned to each other again as the boy opened the case to the ice cream tubs.
"So..." Mitch said awkwardly to fill the silence.
"What's with you and Lissa, hmm?" I said teasingly and prodded his arm perched on the table.
His cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
"We are really close now, I guess... she's a nice girl, you know. Not a crazy fangirl that wants to play with my hair," Mitch said with a laugh.
"What, is your hair a legend on YouTube?" I asked curiously.
"I don't know, I've read the comments in some of my vlogs and some people are saying that my hair is perfect and looks really soft and they really want to run their fingers through it." I bursted out laughing and hugged my sides.
"W-What? Do they really say that?" I asked between laughs. He cracked a smile and nodded.
"Can I see? I want to see if this is true about your hair." He laughed and nodded.
"It was this day that I, Desiree Jade Mariano, is proving the so called 'phenomenon'. This is one small step for girls, one giant leap for fangirl-kind. I am now reaching out to the hair. Here goes nothing," I said in a narrator-type voice. I ran my fingers through his hair and reported my observations.
"Oh my Lord! So soft, and fluffy. This was truely a breathtaking experiences, my fellow fangirls," I laughed.
The boy handed us our ice cream, and Mitch and I fought over who would pay. Mitch finally gave in, and I reached for my wallet.
"Too late," Mitch said and smirked, holding up a five dollar bill between his fingers and handing it to the boy.
I scowled and licked the ice cream, which made my body temperature drop a whole lot more than it already was at.
But the sweetness, so delicious and the creaminess that melted as soon as it touched my tongue.
I shivered as a cold shock from the ice cream and the freezing air ran up my spine.
"Are you okay?" Mitch asked and bit into his ice cream without paying attention.
I lied and nodded, licking the ice cream again.
Delicious.
I kept on taking more and more bites of the ice cream, my body getting colder and colder. My shivers turned violent, but yet I was not stopping.
Sure, call me crazy that I'm torturing myself. But it was weird. The cold was stopping my dark thoughts about death and Lachlan. The colder I get, the more I forget. It's like the cold is slowing down my mind from processing thoughts.
And it tasted so good, something I haven't tasted in...
"Desiree?!" Mitch screamed once he realized I wasn't okay. I felt myself finally stop when cold completely shut my mind off.
Mitch's POV
Her whole body went limp and she closed her eyes as she collapsed onto the table.
"Oh my God, Desiree," I said in a panicking voice and got up from my chair to touch her forehead.
Ice cold.
I cursed and looked around for the boy for help. He probably went into the back.
I carefully picked up Desiree and took her in my arms. Her face was pale as ever, and her lips turned slightly blue from the cold. Her body was freezing against my warm body.
"I should not have done this," I mumbled regretfully to myself as I looked down at Desiree.
***
I had finally reached the house and I gently laid Desiree down on the couch in the living room. I must've wrapped about 5 blankets around her because after I was done, she looked like she was in a blanket coccoon.
I softly laughed and brushed a strand of hair out of her face, studying every inch.
And I thought it was impossible for anyone to be this beautiful.
A/N
Hi guys... you all are probably really mad at me for taking such long breaks... I know. I'm currently in the island of Hawaii for my cousin's wedding, and I'm skipping school. I was taking time with my family while having to juggle homework. It was really stressful. So I know that this chapter is super short and is half of what I usually write, but this is probably how long future chapters are going to be ;~; I'm so sorry, but I think until summer rolls around, time is not going to be on my side. I hope you guys understand and aren't hating me right now, and I'll try my best to write more often :) k baiii
