Desiree's POV

"OH MY GOSH, TONIGHT IS CHRISTMAS EVE PEOPLE!" Jerome screamed.

My eyes snapped open and I propped myself up on one elbow to take a peek at the calendar on the wall. Jerome wasn't kidding for once in this house.

I sighed and folded my sheets over to lazily get out of my bed and shuffle my way to the kitchen.

Preston walked up behind me and loosely slung his arm around my neck.

"Hey, it's Christmas Eve tonight, Dez! Christmas is tomorrow! You excited?"

I stayed silent then shrugged, wearing a small smile. Honestly, I didn't know how to feel about the holiday. Christmas was usually my favorite holiday, but I wasn't super happy and/ or excited about it.

"I don't know, really," I replied. "I'm not wishing for anything."

Total lie.

I was crossing my fingers that Lachlan would wake up now. Yeah, I sounded like a toddler throwing a tantrum about wanting their dessert before eating their dinner. But let me put this way- if someone you loved was gone for longer than you can handle, wouldn't you be impatient too?

No gift could make up for his absence. Cheesy, I know.

"I am so excited. Oh mah lord I can already taste the gingerbread house we're gonna make, mmm." Preston closed his eyes and fantasized the non existent dessert "we" were supposedly going to make.

I smiled a little at him and opened a wooden cabinet in the kitchen.

"Here, you should wear this to the party, Dez." Haley held out a black sleeveless crop top that had a cute snowman in the middle with the words "Let it snow!" in light blue. She got it off of a rack in a small clothing store in the mall.

"Uh, that's a bit too... revealing for me, Haley," I said insecurely, motioning to the open sleeves and how short the shirt was compared to my T shirt.

"Oh, come on, try someone thing new for the upcoming holiday!" she protested.

"Let me remind you that Christmas is about Jesus. I really don't want to go to church looking like a... never mind you get the idea."

"Ugh, fine, how about this?" She showcased a white sweater with a black silhouette of a reindeer with black snowflakes sprinkled around it.

"Sure, that will do," I allowed.

Eventually, we had a whole outfit planned out for me- the sweater, light washed skinny jeans, gray Uggs that were fluffy on the inside, a red scarf, and a red beanie. I don't know why Haley insisted in buying me this. She matter-of-factly told me that "it's healthy to treat yourself" in the check out line as she whipped out her credit card between her fingers. I replied by nodding understandingly like she was a first grade teacher, and she looked back at the cleric, seeming to be pleased with herself.

She commanded me to put on the outfit as soon as I stepped into the house, which looked like Santa's elves had ambushed it with Christmas.

A warm, hazy aura of gingerbread cookies and sugar was lingering in the air and brushing against the ceiling. I closed my eyes and breathed it in, and for a split second it felt like I was taken back into my mother's kitchen ten years ago.

I changed into the outfit Hayley had forcefully gotten me then swiftly walked to the kitchen. I was surprised by seeing Mitch cook for once. Well, not so much cook since Lissa was doing most of the work. He was just shaping cookies.
