Desiree's POV
I blinked a few times to wake myself up. I tried to stretch my arms out to yawn, but they were hugged near my sides by a super thick amount of blankets.
"How did I end up like this?" I asked myself aloud.
"You passed out from the cold," Mitch's voice answered.
Then I suddenly remembered the cold touch of the dessert touching my mouth and the air joining the cold to freeze me.
"I wrapped a bunch of blankets around you so your body temperature would return to normal. I didn't realize how weak you were..." Mitch said with regret in his voice.
"Why... why are you pale and weak, Dez?" I suddenly found the strength to break the layers of blankets and walk off to my room.
"Desiree!" I didn't stop walking.
I quickly reached for my doorknob and shut the door behind my back, locking it before Mitch could break in.
"Dez, how come you won't answer me?" he demanded and knocked on the door. My back slid down the door and I shook my head.
"What are you doing to yourself? Are you... Are you st-starving yourself?" Tears began pricking at my eyes, and I began to softly cry.
"Desiree..." his voice began to get softer. "Is that why you ate the ice cream so fast?"
I stayed silent, my sobs echoing off of the walls.
"And why you're always in your room?"
No sound.
"Is this because Lachlan's in the hospital?" his voice demanded louder, and I flinched at the sudden shout.
"You know, starving yourself and avoiding everyone doesn't solve your problems, Desiree! Don't you understand?"
"Mitch..."
"You're hurting yourself, and hurting everyone that cares about you, too! It's not fair to us, and you're not being fair to yourself!"
"Mitch," I said a little louder.
"Sometimes I just don't understand. Why do you always push us away?"
"Mitch, please," I begged.
"No, don't even, Desiree. Answer me right-" Mitch started.
"You don't understand! You don't know what it's like to be me!" I finally exploded.
"You don't know what it's like to lose everyone you care about! I've lost my parents, my sister, and about to lose Lachlan!" I screamed.
"No one, no one, knows what it's like to have scarred memories since they were young! And no one understands! Everyone has been telling me 'you'll get through it'. But that means nothing, they are just words that are as good as nothing."
"It doesn't make sense," I said, my voice cracking. "Why everyone tries to fix me. I am broken, broken to a point where your words can't do anything. Your words are like water trying to revive a dead plant. Yeah, I'm as good as dead. I'm hanging off of a thread that's barely holding me up."
"Can't we mend the thread?"
"No... you still don't get it Mitch? I. Can't. Be. Fixed."
"But-"
"Mitch, please. Anything you try to do is hopeless."
"Okay, fine. You're right. I don't know what it's like to be you, I don't know what it's like to lose everyone, and I don't know how to fix you. But maybe time will help. Give yourself time, and maybe... maybe things will heal."
I quieted down.
Time? Is that the key?
"I'll give you time. And-and leave you alone to figure things out," Mitch said and his footsteps faded away.
***
After Mitch and I had an... argument of some sort, I went down to the hospital to take a visit to Lachlan.
I stepped into his room and gazed at his motionless body.
He's here, but he's not.
I gripped onto the bars of his bed and sighed.
"Um, Miss Mariano?"
I turned my head towards the door to see a nurse knocking lightly on the half-opened door.
"I'm glad you're here today, I have something important to tell you." I nodded and she walked into the room.
She took a breath and said,
"We have to pull the plug for Mr. Power tomorrow."
