Desiree's POV
Class had gone forever, until, to my delight, the bell had finally rung.
"School is done already? I guess time flies when you're havin' fun. Miss Desiree's first to leave, so make way," Mr. Mallentark jokes.
I smiled a little under the dark brown curtain of bangs shielding half of my face from sight. I shoved everything into my bag and quickly got up from my desk.
"Bye Mr. Mallentark!" I called before I left the classroom.
I dashed to my bright blue bike locked up to a light pole and whipped out my key to unlock it. I took my bag off my shoulder and dropped it into the bike's basket. I swung my leg over the bike seat and took off to the Elder Oak Hill.
The Elder Oak Hill is the tallest hill in our area, and has a huge and beautiful oak tree that my great grandparents planted when they lived (hence the name "Elder Oak").
This is where I go and do my homework and relax. I feel free on the hill, when the breeze combs my hair and cools my body. The tall grass is soft and sweet to smell, making it comfortable to sit on and inhale. There's a tiny waterfall that feeds into a pond not too far away from the tree. The different rates of the water when it falls is euphonic to my ears. The sun isn't too hot on the top, creating a nice and balanced radiation of warm and cool air. Basically, this is my getaway place, my paradise.
I finally reached the hill, beautiful as always.
I walked my bike to the tree and leaned it against the thick trunk. I took out my bag and put it under the shade of the wide stretched branches and their leaves. I kicked my flats off and sat against the trunk of the tree.
I reached for my bag and took out my novel as well as my homework. I left the damp novel in the sunlight to dry. I finished my homework in about three hours, then climbed up the tree really high to a little room concealed with leaves and branches.
I slowly and carefully walked with bare feet to the end of the main branch, which supported the little room. The end of the branch stuck out the most, giving me a clear view of my surroundings.
I sat down on the end of the branch and thought about today. I usually soak in the punches and insults Derek and his group hurl at me, and the other people who like to pick on me, but what Derek said was unbearable. Everyone laughed at me, so more anger for me. Plus, Haley and Lillia were at the scene, too, so that kind of added to my strength when I socked Derek in the nose. I was going to get killed if Preston hadn't saved me.
Preston.
He saved me from being mobbed. He showed me kindness, something I hadn't tasted since... they were here.
I took out on of those small dandelions that are round, light grey, and fluffy. I studied it for a second then shut my eyes so I could concentrate.
"I just wish I could live a normal life," I whispered, as if Angel was listening.
I gently blew the little seeds into the air. I waited for a second, afraid that if I opened my eyes right away, my wish wouldn't be granted.
I opened my eyes a few moments later to see the tiny seeds afloat in the air, dancing in the wind. Soon, everything I saw was swimming in my tears.
I turned around and walked back to the trunk of the tree on the narrow branch. My fingers began tracing the broad carvings on trunk, both words and pictures.
"Come back, I miss you, guys..." I whispered.
This was too much.
I began sobbing and sniffling uncontrollably. I leaned against the trunk, feeling all of the details of the carvings, trying to soak in the happiness that used to thrive in me when they were here.
