Desiree's POV
Everything suddenly turned cold at those morbid words.
"What?" I barely breathed out. "Why? I don't..."
"I'm afraid that the money you had given to us in advance did not last."
I backed against the wall of the hall, speechless in horror.
"No..." My fingers grasped the roots of my hair, my mind refusing to believe his life was ending in less than 24 hours.
"I'm so sorry, Miss Mariano," the nurse apologized with a tone that clearly told she meant it.
"I-is there anything I can do?"
The nurse shook her head. "Not unless you give more money."
Meaning that it's over. We can't give anymore money to save him. It's just too much.
I failed to save another life.
I crumpled to the ground and tucked my knees to my chest, resting my forehead on the top.
Jerome, Rob, Vikk, Mitch, Preston and I all agreed to take out a lot of money from our savings and just have enough left to support ourselves.
We were so sure that he would have woken up then.
"I'm very sorry," she repeated.
"He's going to die, and I can't save him," I sobbed.
"But maybe I can do something about it."
I raise my head up, peeking over the top of my knees.
"What do you mean?"
She crouched down to my level.
"Listen, sweetheart, I know what you're going through. I lost someone I dearly loved to severe brain damage."
She paused to sadly look at a ring on her thin finger worn down from the years.
"I'm not just going to sit here and watch someone you love die if I can do something about it."
The nurse took my hand and said, "I will keep him alive for two more weeks, but that is about as much as I can give."
A spark of hope flared in my heart and my hand rose to cover my mouth.
"I-I don't know what to say... thank you, thank you so much. I cannot thank you enough," I mumbled, tearing up again.
