Desiree's POV

I woke up in a gurney in a white room. There were bright white lights shining in my eyes, making it really difficult to see my surroundings when I scaled the room.

"Wait... don't tell me I've been Accepted..." I whispered, worried out of my mind. My stomach dropped.

If I have been Accepted... then I broke her promise... for something so pointless...

I dropped my head into my hands that lay on my lap and started to cry.

My family believes that when you die, you are Accepted by God into a room where angels separate you to Heaven or to Hell. You are supposed to wake up into a white room in a bed just like this.

"I'm so sorry, Angel..."

"Desiree?" I lifted my head up. Lachlan was standing in the frame of the door.

"You're alive!" he cried and ran towards me. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tight for a while.

"What... why am I here?" I asked as he pulled away.

"The smoke... you inhaled too much of it. Your lungs almost gave up. If the paramedics hadn't come in time, then you wouldn't have lived."

Then you wouldn't have lived. The words rang in my head.

God has given me a second time to walk on Earth.

Angel gave me another chance to try to live happier.

"I'm really sorry about your house, Dez," Lachlan said with a sad look on his face.

"Oh yeah..." I said blankly. I'd forgotten about the "burning house" scenario.

"Oh, frick, wait... now I don't have a house... how am I going to live without a house?"

"Um... I was thinking that you could stay with us?" Lachlan said in a hopeful but nervous way, putting his hand behind his neck.

"'Us'?"

"Yeah, I live with a couple other guys... I moved from Australia to live with them. We have a couple of spare rooms, so you could live with us," he said shyly. "If you want," he added quickly.

"Yeah, okay... I could live with you guys."

Lachlan's eyes widened. "Wait, really? You actually want to stay with me- uh- us?"

"That would be fine with me," I replied casually.

He looked relieved. "Great! 'Cause I-"

"Ah, Miss Mariano! Good, you are awake!" a cheerful voice said behind Lachlan. Lachlan stepped away from the gurney so I could talk to the person.

"Hello...?" I said confused. The person looked at me strangely, then laughed.

"Oh, yes, I forgot! My name is Doctor Fauntel! I am the doctor that has been curing you for the past few days in hope that you would wake up!" he said in a happy tone while holding out his hand. I shook it shyly.

"Thank you so much, Doctor Fauntel. I wouldn't be here without you." He cackled happily.

"You are very polite! But this is my job to save lives. Anyways, your lungs are looking in very good shape, considering the mass amount of smoke you breathed. I just need to run a few more tests, give you a prescription of a few medications I want you to use to recover your weak lungs fast, then you are free to sign out!"

I smiled gratefully and he walked out the door, clutching his clipboard tightly and slightly skipping.

I thought for a second.
