Ashley stands up, "wait, are you telling me that..." Jessie nods her head, and Ashley runs outside. Jeff runs after her, and he finds her crying against a wall. Jeff bends down to her, "Ash...I'm...I'm so sorry..." says Jeff.
"Why?" asks Ashley.
"What?"
"Why her?"
"I don't know Ash, the universe works in mysterious ways..."
"Well fuck the universe! Just fuck everything!"
"Ash! Look, I understand that shit is bad right now, but it is going to get better!"
"How can shit get any better?! My fucking mom is dead!"
"Ash...Fuck!" Jeff starts tearing up,
"Why are you crying?"
"Because your fucking crying! I don't know..." Ashley hugs Jeff and he hugs back, they cry on each other. Jessie walks outside and over to them with someone on the phone,
"Cowgirl, it's your daddy." Jessie hands her the phone and sits next to her, holding her,
"Hello?"
"Hi, sweetheart...I know...I know..." Mr. Smith blows his nose, "I'm upset too, but I need you to be strong, okay?"
"Dad...why? Why her?"
"I don't know why sweetie, I wish I could answer that."
"I didn't even get to say goodbye..."
"I know, sometimes we don't get to say goodbye. Just know that your mother loved you, I know that she wasn't always around, but she loved you more than she loved her own life. You know that right?"
"Yeah."
"Good, now like I said, I need you to be strong, be my brave little girl okay?"
"Yes sir."
"Now, I'm gonna be coming into town for the funeral, I should be there tomorrow. I got to go now, but I want you to remember one thing."
"What?"
"I love you...more than you could ever know. Do you understand that?"
"I love you too daddy." Ashley hangs up the phone and hands it back to Jessie. Jeff and Jessie hold Ashley as they all cry together.
A day later the funeral of Ms. Smith is taking place and all of Ashley's family is there. Jeff, Jessie, and Ashley have just arrived. "Wow, you have a really big family Ash," says Jeff.
"Yeah, and this isn't even everybody, they'll be more joining us through a video call," says Ashley.
"Come on guys, let's get this over with..." says Jessie as they walk in the building. They get in the building and there's at least one hundred people in the building. A woman walks up to her.
"Ashley!" The woman hugs her,
"Hey Aunt Rae." She looks at Jeff, "Jeff this is my Aunt Rae."
"It's nice to meet you ma'am," says Jeff.
"You too son, I'm sorry this is they way we had to meet," says Aunt Rae.
"It's okay..."
"Have you seen my dad anywhere?" asks Ashley.
"Yes, he's in the back. Follow me. I'll take you to him." They follow Aunt Rae to the back where they find Mr. Smith talking to a preacher. He adjusts his suit, as he swipes his short brown hair back. He cleans his glasses, when he hears,
