Rebecca charges forward at me and my ears are suddenly filled with screams from behind me. My friends jump away from me and scatter all around so Rebecca's focus has to land on me. I brace myself for her attack, her jaw snapping forward at me. I move away, my claws shining in the dim street lights as I cut through the air and they catch against her flesh. I leave deep red marks on her shoulder, which only makes her angrier. She growls and pounces forward, giving me no time to move away.
We land in the same position we were at the well, both of my hands pushing against her to stop her from snapping my head off, while her growls vibrate against my skin. I hold her snout closed, pushing up at her lower jaw with both of my hands.
Her claws suddenly catch into one of my shoulders, which makes me yelp in pain. I feel tears prick my eyes and blur my vision from the she wolf that is trying to kill me. The pain washes through my whole body, but I force myself to ignore it.
I remember how I smacked my knee in her stomach, back in the woods and how I escaped her deathly claws.
I snap my knee up into her torso, but Rebecca has learnt her lesson from before. Her hind leg lifts up as well and her claws catch into my thigh, pressing my leg back down against the road. I grit my teeth in pain, feeling how her sharp claws sink into my flesh.
I feel like I'm going to lose this battle with her. My arms burn from how hard I'm pushing against her and I feel how blood drips from my leg and shoulder.
"Stop it!" Somewhere in the background I hear Natalie shout for Rebecca to stop. Idiot. You need to run, I think, feeling like my teeth are going to break from how harsh I'm clenching them. Run away!
I can still feel the soft fabric of Alec's jacket brushing against the side of my face. It lays on the ground beside me, discarded.
I grunt from the weight Rebecca is putting on me, her head slowly lowering inch by inch. My arms shake and burn and I feel how my strength is slowly leaving me.
There's this warm feeling in my stomach all of a suddenly. It's not the same swarming feeling Elliot gives me when we're close or when he kisses me. No, this feeling is different. It's like the colors around me become brighter, it's like I could see everything around me more clearly now. Rebecca's fur glows in the dim streets lights, it looks richer than before.
The sounds around me become louder. I could hear Elliot's tired huff from somewhere far behind, at the start of the street. He won the battle with Freddie and now he's running to see if I'm okay.
I can hear fast moving in the woods and I can suddenly see Ryker's dark brown wolf, with a light brown snout and belly, running towards where we are. It's like I'm running right beside him, the woods passing us by with abnormal speed. I can hear how he bursts through the tree line and past the houses, his claws scratching against the pavement as he charges at us.
My eyes widen and I let go of Rebecca completely, curling into a small ball as Ryker smashes directly into her and knocks her right off of me.
They roll over the road and jump apart, Ryker looking shocked more than anything else. He doesn't look hostile like he did just before he jumped out of the forest. Rebecca scrambles backwards, her golden yellow eyes opened wide and then she suddenly runs.
Ryker whimpers quietly, glancing from her retrieving form and then to me. He's deciding if he should follow her or stay with me. His wolf turns to me then, walking slowly towards me and lowering his head to sniff me.
"Thanks, champ." I mock, using him to help myself up. Natalie takes a few steps closer to where we are, but she stops, unsure of Ryker. I notice how Norrie and Paul hold each other close, both of their forms shaking in fear of getting attacked again.
