Chapter 30

Cass’s POV

The banging and screaming grew louder, the warning siren went off and a mind link from the Alpha (dad) for all women and children to go to the secure lockup below the pack house and all fighters to prepare for battle, we have an army of rogues approaching.

Jack looked at me, “Cass, I have to go, hopefully you will be OK for a couple of hours I will get back as soon as I can, I’ve mind linked Hannah to take something to the room for you to help just in have case, come on I need to know you’re safe before I go.”

I grabbed a sweat pants and T-shirt of Jack’s, then holding my hand he ran me down the stairs, through another door I had never noticed which had more stairs going down, and to a room, which already had the women and children of the pack alongside Hannah and Roisin, he kissed me, told me how much he loved me and ran.

I burst into tears, what if I never saw him again, what if……. Hannah’s touch soothed me somewhat; she whispered how it would be Ok, but somehow the fear in me; that gut feeling left me with a sense of dread. I looked around the room, women of all ages and children sat in huddles, calming each other, comforting crying children.

My father’s voice came through the mind link again warning us to make sure all doors were bolted and to only open them for our own, and that blocks would now be put up so none of the men were distracted during the fighting. I could feel myself shaking, feeling nauseous I was going to lose someone; I should be out there helping.

Hannah locked the doors securely inside, then spoke to the women, “There are blankets and pillows in the cupboards, so please fetch some and make sure you and the children are warm and comfortable. There is a well-stocked kitchen so in a couple of hours if we are still here I would like some volunteers to prepare some simple food. Over in that chest I have put some simple puzzles, colours, etc. for the children to play with and finally we have an emergency generator so that even if they cut the power we will be Ok. The Alpha has been prepared for this for a long time, our men are the best trained, now any questions?” She spoke with authority and the simple, loving Hannah I had grown to love I now saw as an amazing Luna.

People were moving, some helping children find games, others collecting the bedding, some went into the kitchen, other just helped mothers, I could see them pulling together I was proud to be part of this amazing pack.

We had been there for about three hours, my pain was beginning to grow again, but I was trying to push it down, we had been fed, (I had eaten little, I still had a sense of doom, I just prayed it didn’t involve my family) and the women were looking after children or relaxing.

Suddenly the peace was ruptured with loud shouts, screams, and a pounding on the door, we could hear the voices shouting, ROGUES – they were here.

Everyone went silent, listening, a pounding began on the door, shouting, they were trying to get in, we heard, “Get the explosives, we’ll blow the bitches out of it!”

The women were weeping, I told them to gather in one corner, then I stood in front of them, if anyone came in they would have to kill me first, Hannah, looked at me, “Cass, you can’t do this alone.”

“I know, but dad, John and Jack will be here, we just have to hold them off, the door is only so wide and we just need to keep them that side of it.”

We heard, “Move back!” then a huge explosion ricocheted around the room and it began to fill with smoke,  the entrance was gone, I could hear them approaching, two came through the door, I kicked the first one in his neck snapping it he was dead, the second person I kicked his legs breaking them and crashing him to the floor, then I jumped onto his rib cage smashing them,  a third one came, I hit him, he went down, I could see four coming this time, “Let me take over,” said my wolf.

 I transformed into my Golden wolf and for a split second, the rogues stopped, stunned, then a smirk appeared on one of the faces, “Heard about you honey, you are so going to be all ours!”

They came at me and what happened next stunned me, a silver light began to shine, pouring from body,  creating a shield, between me and them, and of course protecting the pack, they ran at it, shot at it, tried cutting at it, but it didn’t give, I could feel myself becoming tired, I wasn’t sure how much longer I could hold it for, it was getting weaker the more they pounded the weaker it became, they could see this and smiling, more of them began throwing themselves at it.

I felt  something touch my shoulder and when I looked there stood my mother, smiling, then my other shoulder, my grandmother, to  my left and right stood my ancestors, smiling at me, at the end my great, great, great, great grandmother in her golden wolf form, when her shoulder was touched finally linking us all together as one what had been a silver shield turned golden, it also had what can only be described as daggers that seemed like fire that literally shot through each of the rogues, burning them, killing them instantly, we held like that killing huge numbers, then I heard Jack’s voice, I knew we were OK, mum turned to me, “The pack is safe now, you can stand down, you did well,” her hand left my shoulder, and she did that what energy they had given me through their touch was gone, and I collapsed to the floor consumed by darkness.

I could feel myself floating, I looked down , I could see my body In Jack’s arms, he was screaming my name, Hannah was sobbing on my dad’s shoulder, the pack doctor was running in with a resuscitation kit, I could see him getting the paddles ready, to try and restart my heart asking Jack to let me go.

Then my mother was beside me, holding me, I felt at home, I felt loved, “Cass, that’s you baby, you have to decide do you want to live? Before you make up your mind, you need to know, you are pregnant Cass, just the beginnings of life but they are there, one boy with wolf genes, and one human girl child who will carry the golden wolf gene for the future, Jack loves you Cass, but it is your decision.”

I could see Jack, crying my dad and John having to physically hold him back so the doctor could give me the shock to restart my heart, I loved him, but I loved my mum, “You don’t have long Cass, what’s it to be?” my mum whispered.
