Chapter 31

Jack’s POV

The call had gone out, I hated leaving Cass but to protect her I had to kill the rogues who were attacking. I left her with Hannah and the women and children of the pack in the secure basement; I hoped and prayed she would be Ok and that I wouldn’t be too long causing her unnecessary suffering from her heat.

We headed to the west boundary where they seemed to be entering and there were a good few 50 or so, but not the numbers we had been warned about, we fought them off, killing mercilessly, they always knew this was the consequence of entering our land, a mind link went up to say there was also a breech from the North; a few of us stayed to finish off the last of the rogues here and the rest went North. Once the West was secured we headed off to help the others, then a cry went out from one of the protectors we had left at the pack house, they had also come in from the South and headed straight to the pack house, they were after Cass, they was killed by the rogues, but not before telling us they were heading to the basement. My heart almost stopped with fear, Hannah, my Luna, the women and children, but mostly Cass, my life, my very reason for existence; because it seemed that she was to be their prize.

I ran as fast as  could, I was exhausted, we had been fighting for 3 hours at this stage, and I had many cuts, and bruises to show for it, but panic overcame exhaustion, fear overcame pain and with my adrenaline pumping I made it to the pack house in record time.

As I shot in the smashed in front door, I could see Alpha and John coming through the destroyed back door, with more wolves behind them. We shot to the door that lead to the basement, down the stairs and what we saw made us stop in our tracks, Cass was there standing in front of all the women and children with what can only be described as a golden shield which seemed to be shooting some kind of gold electric pulse straight into the heart of every rogue, there were literally dead bodies piled high, we quickly finished off the few left.

I turned as Alpha Sean was finishing off the last one, to see Cass drop the shield and collapse, I ran to her, hugging her to me. I called for the doctor, through the  mind link, as I held her closer I could feel her heart beat growing weaker, “Noooooooooooooooooooooooo,” I screamed, “”Oh God Cass, don’t leave me, please Cass don’t die!”

The doctor arrived and began to get the defibrillator out of his bag, John and Sean held me back, I was like a man possessed and when he tore open her shirt to place the paddles on her chest, I almost killed him, I watched as he sent the electric pulse to her body, it jerked up, we all waited holding our breathes, nothing. Her heart had stopped, she was dead.

The women and children were crying, their heroine who had saved them, who had protected them was dead. The doctor looked at alpha Sean, “AGAIN!” the Alpha roared, “My daughter will not die tonight!”

He boosted up the current; he gave it a maximum surge, our last hope, “CASS, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON’T LEAVE ME!” I cried, I threw my head back and howled, everyone joined me, calling to her soul, calling her name! Her body jerked upward, we all waited and then we heard it was small, but it was a heartbeat.

The doctor looked at me, “It’s weak, it’s touch and go,” we raced her to the medical block where she was hooked up to drips, monitors things that bleeped, so much equipment, I just wanted her to live, I needed her to live.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

That was a month ago, Cass has been in a deep coma, her brain activity is minimal, what we discovered when we did the blood tests is that she is pregnant, she is carrying two of our pups, and they are still alive and growing inside her.

She has been moved back to her room, in the pack house, she is on our king size bed, allowing me to sleep beside her, I only leave her side for absolute necessities. I haven’t eaten or slept properly since.

As I look at her now, she still had a heart monitor which is showing a pulse, she has drips in each arm, one for fluids, one for nutrition, her brain activity hasn’t increased, the doctor, tells me all her energy and power is going into looking after the pups and that she is not healing, not recuperating her energy levels.

I play her tunes from her IPod, I look at her many photos describing them to her, I read to her, talk to her, call to her to come back to me, but mostly I just hold her, willing her to live.

The room is filled with Lillies, the women and children bring them every day, because just as they represented everything that was great about Cass’s mum, they represent Cass, the pack love her, they miss her, in such a short time she has managed to find a place in each and every person’s heart.

Alpha, Hannah and her brother and sister spend time each day keeping her up to date on all the family news, again eager to somehow penetrate the depth of the coma.

I turn out the lamp, another day passed, no sign of life except the beep of the monitor, I stroke her cheek, and gently kiss her lips, “I love you, Cass, please don’t give up, please come back to me,” and then holding her hand I pray and fall into yet another fit full sleep.
