Kohl's eyes shifted from Mira to Arya and then to Ezra, while his sword still pricked against Pascal's throat, paying attention to everyone and everything that went on inside the throne room at this very moment. "Well, speak up then," he said.
"I'm just taking something out of my pocket," Mira told Kohl as she dug inside the folded waistline of her skirt. In her hands, she held two small packages.
"These are letters, written by Isoldi, for me," she said, showing something that looked like letters bound together.
Kohl furrowed his eyebrows. What was Mira talking about? Isoldi?
"Kohl," she went on. "I told you I was a Gearian, remember? But what I've never told you, was that I lived in this castle once, before you were born. Isoldi was my best friend at that time. She was a servant, and I was a noblewoman. Later, after my banishment, she became my lover."
"...?"
"I sorted these letters especially for you because these are mostly written about you," she said, showing Kohl the letters in her left hand. "And these..." She lifted her other hand. "These are for Pascal."
"What the fuck are you babbling about, woman?" Kohl didn't understand she wanted to go with this. "Just tell me why you are here! And why you're betraying me and Arya." In the meantime, Kohl had seen how Ezra took a knife from a dead man. "I wouldn't think about that, Ezra. Or I will slit his throat right now. Drop it," Kohl said, pressing his sword harder against his brother's throat until Pascal let out a choking sound.
Ezra dropped the knife immediately. "Please, don't! You're hurting him!"
"And I will hurt him much more if you misbehave again," Kohl growled.
"He is my son!" Mira all of a sudden cried out, shocking all men in the room.
She left out a sigh, for it felt so good to finally tell. "I know your father always told you he was the son of a whore. But he is mine," she said. "I told you I once loved a stubborn man like yourself. How I couldn't break through his wall. That man was the King. Your father."
Pascal started laughing which resulted in gagging and coughing from the pressure of the sword. He tried to lift his head to look at the woman spitting this disgusting lie, but Kohl wouldn't let him.
"First a witch, now my m-mother?" Pascal laughed.
"I am no witch," Mira replied. "I just wanted you to believe I was. I knew about your birthmark because I gave birth to you. And it was quite hard to forget since it is in an unusual spot on your body. I just bluffed, Pascal." She looked at Kohl again. "I know you can read, Kohl, so please read these letters and you will believe me. Please don't kill my only son. I beg you," she dropped to her knees. "I'm not lying. Why would I lie for him? You could easily kill me here right now. I would never save a man that is not worth anything to me. I'm telling the truth."
Kohl looked at Arya, but his wife seemed just as confused as he was.
"Once, your father did love me in his own way, I suppose. But just not enough. He got more violent with me when he noticed I distanced myself from him." Mira said. "I didn't want to be with him anymore, I simply couldn't take it any longer. I tried everything I could, but he just couldn't be helped! I was young! I didn't want a man like that for the rest of my life. I was of noble blood, I could have married another man easily." she sighed. "The night I told him I wanted to break off our engagement, he raped me." Mira began to cry. "I found out I was pregnant, and he held me in the castle all those months. In the meantime, he'd killed my family. I had nothing left. After Pascal was born, he threw me on the streets. The only act of mercy was that he let me live and I got to cuddle my son for one minute." She sniffed. "At least, he thought he was merciful, but it would have been better to just kill me right then and there!"
