"So that was weird last night with Danny." Maya says after she takes a swig of her water bottle.
We were currently laying outside on a couple of lawn chairs enjoying the summer sun and attempting to tan.
"Yeah. Weird." I state simply hoping that she drops it there.
"What was he doing there anyway?"
Guess not.
"He's friends with Jason." I state.
"Oh my god. Okay speaking of Jason. Don't get mad..."
I turn my head towards her. I'm sure although my sunglasses cover most of my face she can see the worry and confusion.
"So we danced last night, and we were about to kiss..."
"What!" I screech and remove my glasses and set them on top of my head.
"I KNOW!"
"Wait why about?"
"Well we heard the commotion in the kitchen so we went to check it out." She shrugs.
"So what's the deal? Do you like him or were you just drunk?" I chuckle.
Maya turns away from me and shrugs. "I mean don't get me wrong, he's super cute. But I don't want a Danny repeat." She chuckles nervously. "Now I know why Kai always warned us about dating before you meet your mate." She mutters.
"Well lucky for you you only spent a month with Danny and not 4 years like he did with Elaine." I chuckle as I set my glasses back down over my eyes.
"You know. I've been so fixated on my own shit I never even asked. How are you with all this?" Maya asks.
A cold chill runs through my body, and I'm thankful for the sunglasses that mask my emotions.
"With what?"
"You know. Not finding your mate at our party?"
Oh right...
"Oh. I mean. I'm good." I chuckle nervously. "I mean you know me. It was cool if I did and cool if I didn't." I shrug.
"It doesn't bother you just a little?" She asks.
I take a sip of my drink and shake my head. I don't trust my own voice.
"I wish I was more like you." She sighs.
"Why like me?" I chuckle.
"You're so calm and cool. I'm everywhere and my feelings are hurt." She mutters.
A wave of guilt hits me, and it makes my stomach grumble.
"Hey! Didn't y'all hear? The sun gives you cancer!"
We both turn our heads towards the back porch where Kai and Lilith stood.
"Werewolves can still get cancer you know" he adds as he walks to us. Lilith rolls her eyes and follows behind him.
"Yeah no shit." I state.
"Don't get an attitude. You're the one out here barbecueing yourself." He chuckles.
Lilith smacks his shoulder and he rubs it as if she actually hurt him.
"You wouldn't get it Kai. You're always the color of Carmel. Not all of us got dads godlike skin" Maya says raising her glasses onto her head.
Kai smiles and rolls his eyes.
"What are you doing here anyway? I feel like I see you more now than when you act lived with us." Maya asks.
