Song - You by Dodie
1998
One summer afternoon, during my time off work and María's calling in sick, we wandered the stores of Queens. Each stores air conditioning was a relaxing sigh out the oppressive of the day. We passed a baby shop.
"Ooh we should get Daisy a new dress!" María exclaimed.
She dragged me into the store and 'awwed' over the tiny clothes."María, look at this." I said picking up a light blue floral baby dress.
"Oh wow." She said stroking the material.
"Y'know me and Joe were gonna have a BBQ on Saturday. It was just going to be us but hey why don't you, Timmy and Daisy come?"
"Ya think? She's still a little young-"
"Oh no. She's one now a proper lady. She'll be fine.""I'll bring it up to Tim and see what he thinks." I said. "But first we need to buy this dress!"
...
"Timmy!" I said as I walked in the door.
"Babe! C'mere!" I heard him from upstairs.
I hurried up with my shopping bags.
He was in Daisy's room.
"What's going on-"
"Shh, do it again Daisy."
He pointed at her.She pointed at him and said.
"Dada."
He looked at me pouting, completely adored.
"Tim, I know she can say dada. She said it last week."
"Yeah but she pointed! She knows I'm dada."
I just laughed and he shrugged me off, picked Daisy up and sat in the chair with her bouncing all smiley on his knee."Anyway, how was your shopping trip?" He inquired.
"Well..." I pulled the dress out of the bag.
He gasped; "Daisy is that for you?" He said in her ear, she giggled and her tickled her tummy making her giggle even more.
"María and Joe are having a BBQ on Saturday. We thought she could wear it there.""Isn't that just gonna be a bunch of drunk 25 year olds though?" He asked.
"No," I folded the dress and put it on the chest of drawers "she said it'll be her, Joe and us."
"Oh!"
"What?"
"Shit I can't tell you."
"Timothée!""Sorry." He whispered realising Daisy could hear.
I rolled my eyes; this happened very often our child may grow up to be Samuel L Jackson with all the motherfucker's she hears every time someone so much as stubs their toe or drops a plate.
"What is it?"
"I can't tell you!""Then why did you go; oh!"
"Ugh, fine. You can't María though!"
"I won't!"
"Okay...Joe said he's gonna propose."
"Oh my god!" I jumped up in excitement....
We arrived at Joe and Daisy's loft. The BBQ was on the rooftop but we went through the home part first. I thought me and Timothée's house was messy- boy. We got on the roof and saw there was a million little lanterns and tables splashed across it. All the tables had flowers on them. There were several men who were crowed round the BBQ and other couples gossiping at tables and corners.
"Y/n! Timothée!" María said running to hug us. Daisy was balanced on my hip.
"María, I thought it was only going to be us?"
"Well it was but then...BLAM!" She shot out her hand to show a large diamond ring on her finger.
"Oh god, María that's great!"
"I know! Mrs. Washington, I like the sound of it- presidential."We laughed.
"Suits you María." Timothée said.
"Thank you." She smiled. "Now, I know this party is a bit busier than you anticipated but everyone is really friendly. So just keep her away from the drinks table and you should be fine." And just like that she was gone.
"Okay then, why don't I get us drinks and you can get her an ice cream.""Team work baby." I said giving him a high five and walking over the the mini fridge that was displaying ice creams. I took one out it's wrapper and handed it to Daisy who began to lick at it, making me chuckle. I gazed back over to the drinks table and saw Timothée speaking with an attractive young blonde woman. They were laughing. She touched his arm, she stroked his arm. Oh hell no.
I, as calm as I could, marched over there Daisy still on my hip. I tapped his shoulder then appeared beside him.
"You get the drinks Tim? Oh, hi."
"Hi." The woman said, nervously.
Still got it I thought.
"Is this your sister Timothée?" She asked.
Okay maybe not."Um no she's my-"
"Wife." I smiled extending my hand, I gave her a real firm handshake.
"Oh," she seemed disappointed. That's what I was aiming for.
"H-how long have you been married?"
"Two years." He answered this time.
"Oh."
"How do you two know each other? She one of the twenty five?"
"What? No, no. We just met." Timmy assured me.
"Oh, should we go away from the drinks table babe? Y'know, Daisy.""Sure, uh nice to meet you." He said as we walked off.
"Saved ya." I said.
"What?" He sounded confused.
"Oh come on she was totally flirting with you!"
"She was not."
"She so was. I saw her stroking your arm, and giving you that look. I know that look I've done that look.""Well, she seemed very interested in me being a photographer. She said she love for me to take pictures of- ohhh I see where you're going with this."
We sat down at one of the tables.
"How did I get you if you're so clueless?" I laughed.
"Cause you were forward as fuck!"
"I suppose I kinda was."
I took a sip of my drink and looked back at Daisy who had now finished her ice cream. To be more clear, she ate most of it and the rest was on her face.
"Oh Daisy darling." I chuckled.
"Here." Timothée passed me a napkin and I wiped her cheeks.
"Hey Daisy I'm like that when I eat pasta you just gotta" he swirled his tongue around his lips comically and Daisy giggled.
"Try it!" He said.
She tried her best to copy and we laughed at her cuteness.A/N: Writing these is so much fun :)) Also I chose this song not because the lyrics go with the story but because the tune does, cause the tune is happy and the lyrics are sad lol. They are in a good place rn. Also y/n is so SASSY in this one but tbh I'd be too lol.
