When I get home both my parents were sitting in the family room and they were going at it in hushed voices. I slam the door and drop my bag letting my presence be known. "Alexandria Renee Pierce. I told you to come straight home, why did you take an hour to come home? Huh?" My mom stands up from her seat giving me a stern look.
"I was busy." I mumble as I sit on the couch. My father clears his throat and my mom eyes him before sitting down.
"Now your mother and I have spoken, and we're worried about you. Why haven't you told us that you're getting bullied? There's videos and messages all over social media." I put my hand under my chin and pick at the couch. I don't respond and my mom responds with a sigh.
"What's going on?" She says in her best motherly voice, a complete contrast from before. "Is this why you keep cutting your hair?" I roll my eyes, forgetting that it's my mother I'm talking with. "Alexandria." She claps.
"Mom." I groan. "It's not that big of a deal... just high school stuff." I mumble. She squints her eyes at me.
"So why in the video do they say that you did something with a boy behind the bleachers?" She crosses her arms. I know from the heat that I felt in my cheeks that they reddened from embarrassment. Both of my parents know about the rumors.
"The rumors aren't true, you know me, you know I wouldn't do anything like that. That guy lied on me to up his status or whatever." I wave my hands.
"You know your mother and I could've handled it for you." My dad clasps his hands in his lap.
"I was embarrassed."
"Well, if you said it wasn't true, then we would have believed you and gotten to the bottom of it." He says. My mom cuts in and by the look on her face, I know she's uncomfortable asking.
"Now, why are they calling you a homewrecker online?" Oh, God.
"Please, no."
"Are you dealing with someone's boyfriend Alexandria?" Her brows crease. I quickly shake my head not letting her thoughts wander any further.
"People assume because I've befriended a well-known guy at my school, and they think that we're together."
"Well, are you." My dad speaks up again.
"No, just friends—barely. Well now we are but before we weren't..." I fumble my words trying to explain our relationship.
"Landon, correct?" My lawyer mother, of course she knows his name. I'm sure she knows he's on the debate team by now and probably that his family owns the restaurant too.
"Yes." Is all I say.
"I know I had a talk with you prior, telling you to defend yourself the next time someone stepped to you... maybe I should have emphasized not to do it in school in front of the entire staff and principal." She eyes me making my dad sigh. I can tell he's withholding his clear disdain for her advice.
