I pull out the first book from the shelf that catches my eye and I quickly change my mind once I read the title. I eye two other books, The Invisible Man and Beloved. I check out The Invisible Man first and Madison spots me out through the bookcase quickly stamping toward me.
"What the hell happened Alex? I woke up and seen calls and texts from your mom, then when I called you the next day you didn't answer any of my calls, so I had to ask your mom what happened. Why haven't you answered any of my calls?" She probably thinks that she's whispering.
"I didn't want to talk about it. My parents called the damn cops on me they thought that I ran away I was pissed. And my mom wants me to quit my job."
"Dude she thought you were kidnapped, and you didn't tell her where you were so of course she'd assume something bad happened to you and she said that's why she was trying so hard to get in touch with me."
"Yeah well, she called the cops and it'll be a cold day in hell if she thinks I'm going to quit my job just because she said so." I snatch a book from the bookcase, not paying too much attention to it and went to sign it out.
"Okay Alex, I know that your dad told you to stay stern and do what's needed to be done for yourself but... you're going to get yourself into deep shit if you keep defying them."
"I just want to be and feel in control of my life. I want to do things on my own terms, I always have to do what my mom says and I'm tired of it." Madison steps back and holds her hands up.
"I was just trying to reason with you, but I won't do that again."
"I'm sorry, balancing my life hasn't been the easiest as of late. I just wish that graduation would get here already—it's only October." I rub my face, feeling myself get frustrated thinking about everything.
"I can't believe they called the cops on you man."
"Yeah, me either, I can only imagine if I had my location on, they probably would have popped up and yelled at everyone in the restaurant including me. By the way, she took my car away from me too... again"
"Wait so you can't take me to get food before game days anymore?"
"Not until further notice."
"Wow, so how'd you get to school today?"
"An awkward ass car ride with my father of course. But I'd rather ride with him right now than my mom. He doesn't try and talk to me and I don't try and talk to him."
"If that works for the two of you." She shrugs her shoulders. "But why do you always stay so late after work?" She laughs and takes my book from me looking at the back of it.
"We take hours to clean up because our owner is very thorough and I'm not complaining about it either, it's comforting working at a clean place."
"That's good that they don't have roaches scattering around in their kitchen." We both shiver at the thought.
