With it being the third day of a two-week break, my schedule was open. The work schedule is different this time because Landon made it clear that he would not be working over the break because he needed to study and practice over break for debate. I understood, he was preparing for upcoming competitions in January. This one day he promised me that he'd pick me up from work and take me home, so I didn't drive this time. I hope he won't flake on me because it's too cold to wait for my parents and I'm not asking anyone else.
For once in a long time, I had a shift with both Jasmine and Benny and the tension was clearly there. Jasmine was distant and Benny ignored me entirely. I was annoyed the entire shift because the tension made me uncomfortable, I was ready for it to be over with. "You okay Alex? You've had a scowl on your face the entire shift honey... you and Landon okay?" She asks concerned and I let out a sigh palming my forehead.
"Yes, Landon and I are okay, just one of those days, you know." I keep it short not wanting to tell her everything.
"Okay just making sure 'cause I can read a room." She side eyes me letting me know that she knows. I sigh and simply nod my head not wanting to get into it. I turn to walk away and Benny brushes past me not bothering to say anything.
"Wow how polite." I say sarcastically. "Jerk." I scoff and he doesn't bother to acknowledge me as he heads to the break room. That's it. I'm not working with him anymore. I tell myself. I can't do it if he's going to be cold like this. I get I hurt him, but still, I just want to tell him to grow up. He's in college why is this such a big deal to him? I look across the room and see Jasmine giving me an apologetic look and she mouths I'll talk to him before disappearing to the back. I text Landon asking if he was starting to be on his way and he reminds me that he doesn't live far away like me. I laugh at his message remembering that I'm a bit further out from everyone else.
I clean up the front with Mrs. Alicia as she pops in and out and we don't say anything as we try and rush to do so. Jasmine and Benny don't come back, and I stop expecting them to after 20 minutes. "I told them to clean the kitchen and I let the cooks go home." Is all she says before she hurries to clean some more. I guess Benny is too upset this time, I know she knows not to schedule us together anymore. It sucks how time changes so quickly.
"Do you want to change your schedule to something better?" She asks sympathetically. I sigh as she subtly admits that she sees what's going on.
"I'll accommodate to any changes you make." I nod and she returns the gesture. it was awkward how my boss slash newfound boyfriend's mother is catching onto my mess of a life and taking pity on me.
"Of course, I'll send you a message." She starts to mop the floor and I stop what I'm doing thinking of what to say.
"Hey, Mrs. Alicia I'll make sure to touch base with my parents about a great time to have dinner."
"Oh right, I'm looking forward to it. Just let me know if they'd like it to be at their place or ours." She gives a warm smile. We hardly have anyone at our home, but I know my mom will love to have an excuse to dress up and have a fancy dinner.
