Sunday morning, my heart is thumping against my chest because I'm on Instagram nearly Insta-stalking Landon. Dawn is just breaking, and I know that the neighborhood is still sleeping in, you could hear a pin drop outside. I was being careful not to like any of his pictures—especially because I was doing a deep dive into his page—28 weeks into his posts.
What Madison said got me thinking so here I am looking at his pictures. He had a great following on Instagram, 10.1 thousand—that is a lot more than I had on my page.
He has plenty of pictures to look through; I stop on a picture of him in a white buttoned-up shirt with a navy-blue tie standing behind a poll stand. He was mid-speech with his finger pointed out. He captioned it Deliberation and debate is the way you stir the soul of our democracy – Jesse Jackson.
After taking on the deal I decided to do my research on the debate team, they won nationals in California last year. From what I read they were damn good too, but their personalities were horrid, my encounter with them in the parking lot gave me the conformation for that. They knew how to code switch when it came to their debates, the championship titles showed that.
I slide over and scroll down to more pictures. I click on a picture of two boys' side by side, the caption read #tbt. My fingers were shaking the entire time because at this point if I mistakenly like a picture this far back, he'd know I was scrolling through his page.
"Oh no—dammit!" I spoke too soon. I smack my forehead in panic from what I just did, I mistakenly liked his picture! Of course, I can't be sneaky when it's most necessary. "Why'd you have to be so shaky Alex, sheesh."
I don't know whether to unlike the post or not, he probably got the notification to his phone. I don't follow him either so that sealed the deal, now he'll think I'm weird. It's too late, I can't take it back now. I tap on my screen trying not to have a nervous breakdown hearing my phone waiting to connect.
"Please answer, please answer, please answer..." I bite at my fingernails nervously. It is still early; she may not wake up.
"Now is not the time to sleep through my FaceTime." When I hear the call connect, I feel a bit of relief come over me.
"I'll tell you what—this better be an emergency Alexandria." Her words slur as she keeps her eyes closed with her face in the camera.
"I made a huge mistake Madison, I liked one of his posts from like 30 weeks ago." Her eyebrows knit together as she replies.
"Who?"
"Landon's!"
"How do you mistakenly like a post?"
"My hands were shaking like crazy! What do I do?" She let out a sigh like she was tired of hearing me talk.
"Don't do anything Alex let it go." She slurs.
