Morning came and the boy was exhausted. The short while of sleep which he desperately hung to was disturbed by the girl who tiptoed into his room in the middle of the night.
Her words rang in his ears, his heart thumping harshly against his chest at the mere thought of it.
It was simply a moment, and he wished more than anything that it could have lasted longer.
It was all so bittersweet, in a way. He had pondered many times what their first time confessing to one another would have been like, yet she changed his full expectations.
He wanted so badly to have been the one to tell her first, to see her eyes light up at the mere mention of him being in love with her - that was how he imagined it.
Yet he was not the slightest bit disappointed. He had worried half the night that his little outburst was enough to make her stray away, to turn her back on what they had. Yet there she was, sneaking around in the night to whisper her love into his ear.
"I'm beginning to think you don't like my cooking, Hyunjae," Mrs Lee said, the boy sitting up straighter in his chair. "After all these years, now you're deciding not to eat."
"It isn't that, mother," the boy shook his head, thinking of ways around this. "My stomach doesn't feel right, is all."
The woman hummed, edging closer to the boy with a raised eyebrow. "Dallia had a funny stomach yesterday too. Have you been with her?"
"It's inevitable, mother," the boy gulped, the lie backfiring and only causing more suspicion than he intended. "We are living under the same roof."
"Sure," his mother nodded slowly, turning her back on her son. "I'll be watching you very closely."
"I'm a grown man," Hyunjae argued back, his mother repeating his words in a mocking tone of voice which only made him chuckle, standing up as he looked outside. "You can watch me go into the garden to paint."
The woman nodded with a chuckle, peaking out the window where she would in fact have a clear view of him, yet she knew she wouldn't be looking.
It was no use. He would avoid the girls presence if he thought she was watching, she knew that much.
When it was most unexpected, that's when they would be together. She knew that once she had been a young person in love, sneaking around behind their parents' back. She had never, however, been in love with someone so out of reach, someone who wore a ring upon their finger, someone royal.
But she had been in love. And for that reason alone, she would keep her eyes to herself.
She just prayed that her son would be the smart son she had raised him to be, and not get caught.
"Another daisy chain?" Hyunjae chuckled as he approached the girl who sat in the grass, her back hunched as always, which only straightened at the sound of the boy approaching.
