There was complete silence as soon as Vanessa ended the call. I already knew what was in their minds. Look at how crazy he is, not denying that he got a girlfriend when Vanessa was clearly there.

From the very start, I could tell that they were all rooting for us both. The perfect couple.

But, I just felt like I was being forced to someone that I never liked as something beyond friends.

Yen was looking at me directly, her eyes focused on the expression that I had. To be honest, the only thing I could manage was scoff and glare right through the laptop that was right on my sister's lap. My eyebrows were furrowed, almost wanting to throw a dagger to break it.

This was my only way to free myself from her but everything turned to dust. I went right back to phase one.

"Ethan, I am so sorry if I didn't tell you right away." My gaze turned to my sister, who slowly closed the laptop and pushed it right to the side. I don't even know what side she was on.

A simple nod was what I did before going right back outside. I paid no attention to my parents, who were as speechless as my sister was. Or maybe they were too disappointed in me to speak their thoughts out.

I could never tell, judging the unreadable expression that was plastered on their face.

Whatever it was, all I know is that I don't want to be here right now. I need some fresh air to think.

A few minutes later, I suddenly heard Mom's voice. No, she wasn't here to talk to me calmly. She wanted me to contact Vanessa once again and solve this mess by apologizing.

Breaking up with Claire was one of the options she gave me as well.

But that's the last thing that I want to happen.

"If you're going somewhere, you're not allowed to. I never expected that my son is a cheater," she told me as I huffed. I wanted to get away badly but I know that I can't keep on running away from my problems.

If I really want to get away from Vanessa, I have to keep on telling her that we're just not meant to be with each other.

"It's not cheating if we weren't a couple, to begin with, Mom." The glare she gave me made me realize that it was their decision whether Vanessa and I are together or not.

Realizing that the phone of my mom was still in my pocket, I took it out and gave it back to her. She just stared at me and sighed. I guess she really wants me to talk to Vanessa again. But, I'm making sure that Vanessa accepts on her own that we were nothing but friends.

Mom probably couldn't stand the fact that I was just standing here without any plans of making sure that Vanessa and I were alright.

Letting out a sigh, I decided to make a rash decision. Call Vanessa but not in front of my parents. I want her to know every second that we had never been together as a couple, at all.

And that everything was just an act to keep her at bay.

"Look, your dad and I just want both you and Vanessa to be alright with each other," Mom told me as I made sure to shake my head in disagreement. "I'm sure that your relationship can still be fixed."

"I'll be the one to fix this myself, Mom. But, not your way," I answered, hoping that she'll get the hint. However, that seemed to backfire when I saw her still standing there with a raised eyebrow and her hands waving at me to continue.

She then told me to get my phone and search for Vanessa's name in the contacts. Judging by how she acted, I quickly wanted to back out. No, not like this. My mom really tries to rekindle the flame between me and Vanessa.

But, it was long gone.

"Then, try to call her." Her hands still try to make me take my phone out. "Fix your relationship, right here and now."

"Look dear, we just want you and Vanessa to be a happy couple and—" There, I had it. I couldn't help but stop going to my pockets to get my phone and instead closed my eyes and sighed. My mom would never know how badly I wanted to get out of this relationship.

She would never know how I felt. Even if I try to tell her that Vanessa and I would never be the best match.

"Happy couple? Is that what you think of us?" Finally, my sister decided to go to us — watching the scene unravel. I couldn't help but laugh at this as my mom gave me a cold glare, almost staring through my soul.

She thought that Vanessa was still that sweet girl that she met when Vanessa and I were still young. Well, she changed. Vanessa clings to that small hope that she and I would stay together forever.

"Since when did we become a 'happy' couple? Every time she calls, she messages, I always lose my freedom. Piece by piece."

Mom points her finger at me and gave me a disapproving look. "Don't ever say those things about her, Ethan. Vanessa had been nothing but a sweet girlfriend to you."

If she won't believe me, if my mom doesn't believe me, then I'd rather leave the scene than argue with her. As if on cue, I received a text message from Benedict that we'll have a victory party later since our coach had been proud of the match we had earlier.

"I need to go," I made sure to tell my mom and sister as I took the car keys once again before unlocking the door. My mom wanted to stop me but Yen decided to hold on to her arm, knowing well that I wasn't in the mood.

Finally, my sister was the one who decided to ask me. She beat my mom into it too. "Where are you going, Ethan?"

"Victory Party," I quickly replied as I got into the car, not wanting to hear them disagreeing with my decision. This party would be my escape for a while.
