Verona couldn't sit still. There was a charged current flowing through the air, and she didn't know what to make of it.
After Donna had left, it had taken a couple of days for everyone to calm back down before they realized they weren't going to be harassed by the local coven. Verona was the only one left on guard, even after two months. She knew Donna and the other witches were not the cause of it, but she still couldn't get over her uneasiness.
Something bad was about to happen.
Deciding she couldn't handle her concern on her own, she went to go talk to Declan. Normally, she'd go to Connor, but he was busy with Marie and their upcoming pup. A human pregnancy lasted nine months, but a wolf's pregnancy was much shorter. In the wild, a normal wolf was only pregnant nine weeks, but since Marie was neither human, nor a "real" wolf, her pregnancy would last three months. The scent change only happened during the first month, usually around the third week, so her niece or nephew was due anytime now and Connor didn't want to leave his mate's side.
Knocking, she waited until she heard Declan call out before entering his office.
Declan glanced at Verona as she walked in, barely registering her look of concern before doing a double take and taking a long hard look at his best friend's sister.
"Verona? Is something wrong? Is it Marie?" he asked, standing up from his desk, worry for his sister leaking into his voice.
"I don't know, Dec. I don't think so, though. Can I talk to you for a minute?" Verona asked a little worried he wouldn't take her seriously.
"Of course, Verona. What's up?"
"I know this sounds crazy, but... I feel like something bad is gonna happen. Soon," she began. "Ever since Donna visited, I can't shake the feeling something big is coming. And before you say anything, no. I don't think it has to do with the witches. It feels... different. I don't know, bigger."
"Ooookk... What do you feel exactly?" Declan asked as he led her to the couches on the other side of the room.
"I don't know exactly. I just can't seem to relax, and my wolf feels like she's pacing back and forth, like she's standing sentinel or something. I know I should have taken this to Connor-"
"No, you were right to bring this to me," Declan reassured her. "Besides, Connor is a little busy at the moment," he chuckled. "Anyways, what kind of alpha would I be if I didn't listen to the head of my security? If you think something isn't right, more than likely, something isn't right."
Declan sat forward, placed his elbows on his knees, leaned his chin on his steepled fingers, his lips pursed, deep in thought. He was glad Verona had voiced her concerns. Alyssa had told him she'd had a strange dream about blood the night before, and at first, he'd just pushed it to the back of his mind thinking she was nearing her "woman's time", but now, with Verona coming forward, he felt there may be some connection he couldn't see.
"Ok, so what do you suggest we do?" he asked her, coming to no conclusions on how to rectify the situation.
"I'm not sure," she replied. She hadn't expected Declan to take her seriously, so had not come up with any contingency plans. "Maybe we should increase patrols for the moment? Maybe stock pile supplies. I don't know. Did we ever get the shelter set up for the women and pups? Maybe we should check with the other packs around this part of the country. See if they know of anything bad happening?"
"Now I remember why I picked you for security!" Declan laughed. "Ok, start the patrols, and I'll handle setting someone on stockpiling. The shelter is set up and ready, just in case, and I'll call the other alphas," he said, standing and walking over to his desk.
"Oh and Verona, "he called out to her as she was about to leave the room, "don't ever be afraid to bring your concerns to me, ok? I'm here for everyone. You are all my priority, and I want to keep you all safe."
Verona gave Declan a smile of gratitude, some relief starting to flow through her body at his words. "Thanks, Dec. For everything. You're a great alpha."
Before Verona could turn the handle to the door, one of her patrolling guards came bursting through the door, nearly mowing her over in his haste to get in the room. Alarmed, Declan turned at the intruder, but before he could say anything, the guard said one word, causing the blood in his body to freeze.
"Rogues!"
