*Kellin's POV*
Today was my first day at my new school in California. My mom and I moved from Montana to here to escape the excessive drug use and abuse that state had to offer. She, unfortunately, picked one of the biggest cities in this state. I preferred our old house, despite the constant druggies asking for money. It was nice and semi-secluded. Now, I'm here in the middle of San Diego wondering how many things will go wrong on this first day.
I stumble sleepily to my bathroom for a quick shower and groom. My hair looks nice at least, it's usually messy and not willing to cooperate. I head back to my room, pick out my outfit, and redirect myself downstairs for breakfast.
"Hey sweetie!" My mom greets me enthusiastically. I smile, and reply with "Hi," purposely letting the irritation in my voice protrude.
"Oh now, don't be a big baby, your first day will be awesome I bet!" She kisses me on the forehead and heads out the door. Early worker. It kind of upsets me that I don't see my mom much in the mornings, rather much at all. She's also a late worker, unless she gets lucky, and someone fills in for her. She comes home when I'm either already asleep, or just about there. I didn't see her much in Montana, either.
To top it off, she's the only family I really have left. We left my dad back in Montana because he was abusive to the both of us. Of course, no one knows that besides us. I have no grandparents. My mom is a single mother that strives to keep food on the table. No matter how much she can annoy me, I'll always be grateful for her effort.
I eat my breakfast, slip my shoes on, grab my bag and head out the door.

I have two main rules I never break at school. Number one: don't stand out. Number two: don't talk back. To anyone. I knew better from school in Montana, since the kids there were high most of the time, they were also extremely violent and short-tempered when they didn't gey what they want. I kept my mouth shut about the guys that always picked on me though, I didn't want to stress my mom even more.
I walk through the school doors to see a mass of new faces. Some with nose wrinkles prominent from concentration, and some that literally could care less. I'm not big on school, but failing has never been my forte.
I scan over my schedule and discover that geometry is the kick off of the day. I silently curse myself for not objecting to making it my first class when I did my schedule over the phone with my councilor. But, again rule two: don't talk back. I search around like a calf without it's mother for the classroom with the matching number on my schedule, making it just in time. I take a seat at the very front row, and begin to unpack my bag. Sometimes I thank Montana for giving me vital school tips, as I also know better to stay away from the back even if you are a new student. The back row is for all the cool/popular/dickish people to sit.
"Nerd" I heard someone scoff as they walked past my seat. Great, first 5 minutes and I've already been insulted.
While everyone's busy talking and waiting for the teacher to make an appearance, I whip out my phone and text my friend Nick to keep me busy.
Me: Dude it's crazy here! What's going on back home at the moment?
Nick: Kids getting high as usual. And I bet, It's San Diego!
Me: Yeah, but I miss you and the guys, you'll have to come see me soon!
Nick texted back, but I had no time to see what he said as the new teacher took his place at the front of the class, waiting for everyone to redirect their attention.
"Alright, hush! We have a new student here in first period, uh.... Kellin! Kellin, uh, Bostwick? Did I say that right?" He searches the room looking for the student to own the name.
"Yeah, but I go by Quinn, for my last name." I replied, and gave him a polite smile after.
"Oh, okay Kellin. Well I'm Mr.Sanders, welcome to first period geometry. He says, smiling back.
"Fresh meat!" Someone calls from the back of the room.
"That's enough Gaskarth." Mr. Sanders snaps.
"Sorry sir." He says in a sarcastic whimper.

After that, the rest of the day went by relatively quick. I didn't make friends, and sat alone at lunch, but it wasn't something that particularly bothered me. I enjoy having time to just read my favorite books and listen to music. Currently, I'm heading for the school doors as the first day just ended. My first foot nearly exited the premise, when someone pushed me aside to the lockers. My head hit the wall first, then along with the rest of me as I slid down the wall and awaited the worst.
"Hey you, I saw you walk in this morning like you own the place." An unfamiliar voice spat, "but just know, I run this school. Got it?" I looked up to an unfamiliar face, he was sort of short, but had semi spikey hair and a fierce vibe.
"I-I'm sorry." I stuttered out pathetically.
"You better be. Engrave my name in your memory: Jaime. Engrave this message too: Don't challenge him."
I scowered back closer to the wall, Jaime was now standing over me, fist in the air ready to knock the wind out of me. I was expecting it any moment, when I heard another voice shout at Jaime "Hey man, bag the hell off the poor kid!" I looked up again to another short guy, but this guy had short, wavy brown hair that rested on his shoulders.
"He deserves it, he'll just be another outcast when I'm through with him." Jaime turned back to me and punched me in the stomach. I yelped at the pain, but another part of me was used to this kind of treatment.
"What the fuck!" The other boy shouted and pushed Jaime aside. He knelt down at eye level to me, his eyes full of concern. "You okay?" He asked. I could only blink, I had kind of just got winded and didn't exactly have the breath to answer.
Instead of the stranger asking more questions, he told Jaime to get lost, which Jaime obeyed, and left the school.
The stranger helped me to my feet and handed me my books and bag when he again asked if I was okay. I quickly nodded and turned to leave, I needed no more problems.
As I walked away, the stranger called out after me "And by the way, my name's Vic!"
I kept walking, but mentally thanked this kind boy named Vic.
